Y'all routinely and severely disenfranchise people. Gerrymandering, removing people from voting rolls, voter ID rules that exclude poor and minority voters, intimidation at polls, deliberately inconvenient polling stations, winner-takes-all electoral college rules, and allowing unlimited dark money in politics all work together to disenfranchise tens of millions of people. Blaming those people for not voting is obscene.

People who consider themselves high caste tend to be cool with discrimination so long as it's not them being discriminated against. Kind of like how a subset of white Americans are cool with racism against brown people but would react violently if they were repressed the same way.

They donāt still have a caste system technically, just as the US technically no longer has a legal race-based caste system.Ā
But youāre correct that in both cases, the cultures built from those systems persist.Ā
2
u/b_needs_a_cookie 23h ago
I recently learned that the caste issues immigrate over here with the H1B Visas. There can be staffing issues if the manager is a lower caste than their direct reports. Similar to what we still see play out in the US with race and sometimes faith.Ā
Not sure if you've read it but Caste, the Origins of Our Discontent by Isabell Wilkerson is a fascinating read.
2
u/Comfortable_Fill9081 23h ago
Iāve worked with mixed-caste groups. The dynamics of caste definitely appear. But depending on the individuals, it can be a problem or not.Ā
Just like working with mixed-race groups. It really depends on how much the people from the more privileged groups are assholes vs respectful in my experience.Ā
So, yes to this:
Ā There can be staffing issues if the manager is a lower caste than their direct reports. Similar to what we still see play out in the US with race and sometimes faith.Ā
And thanks for the recommendation.Ā
2
u/Frosty558 23h ago
How do they know what caste the others are?
3
u/JonTheAutomaton 22h ago
Usually surnames indicate the caste. It comes from your lineage.
2
u/Frosty558 22h ago

2
u/JonTheAutomaton 22h ago
The really fucked up thing about this is that castes are supposed to represent professions. So, scholars, teachers, rulers (administrators in the modern age I guess), etc form the uppermost castes whereas menial workers and the downtrodden form the lowermost castes. And there's many in between. But if you are born into a low caste family and become a scholar you don't then become high caste. No. You're forever whatever caste you were born into. It also works the other way, if you were born a high caste but poor and lacking opportunities like a typical low caste person would, you're still not eligible for 'reservation' which is an affirmative action type system for upliftment of the lower castes. Many people dislike reservation because of that, consider it discriminatory itself and want it gone but again it's not that simple. Because its determined by bloodline, caste differences have left a mark over several generations because your whole family literally cannot escape their caste. Society today has moved on from the caste system but only partially (and to different extent in different regions of India). So, we get contradictions like well to do lower caste families who no longer need the support but are entitled to it anyway and struggling upper caste families who aren't. But you can't get rid of reservation blindly either because many other lower caste families are still stuck and have no hope of a better future if they're not given a helping hand. But determining who needs it and who doesn't for over a billion people belonging to tens if not hundreds of different cultures, languages, and many other differences, as you can imagine, impossibly complicated. So, the problem is very very deeply rooted and difficult to solve.

u/Comfortable_Fill9081 21h ago edited 21h ago
Also, in addition to the names someone else mentioned, skin color does not coincidentally coincide with caste: Ā lighter skin - higher caste, darker skin - lower caste, on average.Ā
2
u/sylbug 22h ago
They still have a caste system in the same way America still has systemic racism. I don't know what to tell you if you believe all Americans enjoy equal rights and protection under the law because that take does not match with reality.

India does not like America, they are suffering from tariffs. Survet bias, majority of Indians are not participating in this survey, which mean billions aren't voting.
1
u/McKoijion 20h ago
Is this the source of the data?
I don't think it matches the colors in this map, but it's referenced in articles from a few days ago like this one:
https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/16/world/asia/pew-opinion-survey-china-united-states.html
I wish the person who made this infographic included the specific Pew study and date. People on social media circulate these things for years after they're relevant. My best guess is that this map is from the time that China was in conflict with South Asia overall. India, Pakistan, and the rest of the region are all in agreement on liking the US on this map which is odd.

u/Small_Owl_ 20h ago
There aināt no way that was the opinion of the US before trump. Why lie? If that was the option of the US before trump, the world didnāt make us feel that way. Growing up in the 2000ās US it really felt like the world was against us.
2
u/RailgunRP 19h ago
And that is what we know as propaganda.
"it felt like the world was against us" because that's what the sentiment needed to be, we needed to be strong together against a world that is against us, especially the middle east.
When the world feels like your enemy, you're more likely to trust your government. That feeling of being surrounded of people who hate you is what OrangeMan(tm) weaponized to get into power both times. And during the second one he made sure the world ACTUALLY pitied the US.

Don't get me wrong for the most part American people are nice "loud" but nice but there is a fraction that have been brainwashed by Trump .
Politically democrats and republicans have to me never been too decisive yes two sides of a coin but in general politics between the two parties have been mostly amicable which is what democracy is you have teh right to believe how a country should be governed but this current administration is just doing what they like and fuck everyone no matter if they voted for you.
Ive always loved how big the country is and the landmarks they have , its a beautiful place for the most part .
