I kind of knew in 2015 because I like to hang out on conspiracy theory forums and was witness to those spaces becoming more and more right wing as 2016's election season carried on. So I had a serious fear that Trump was going to win in 2016 that turned out to be right. What I failed to see though was the scope of how large and dug in these people are with their shitty beliefs. I didn't really notice that until a few years into Trump's presidency watching his base of support never falling below around 30%

The folks who wrote the legislation for the 'war on drugs' said it plainly in interviews. It was because they needed a legal way to discriminate against minorities after the civil rights movement. Drugs were more prevalent in black neighborhoods than white and so the drugs became a proxy for state racism.
They'll still gaslight us and stay uninformed on issues related to us--hell our issues are becoming even LESS of a priority to them now that they're getting the treatment we've received for decades.

Growing up in the suburbs I definitely knew these sentiments were alive and well. I was a teen in the late 00s and this stuff was super common even then. When Obama got elected there were kids saying he should be lynched, calling him a monkey, etc. None of this stuff ever went away. Social media gave everyone a platform to speak, connect, and organize. Now we can all see the reality of the nation.
I grew up in a rural area where some of the people my parents knew indirectly or directly knew the Michigan militia guys. I knew they were still around.
We have these people all over germany too. They piped down for a few decades but papa musk and those funding the far right helped them reignite their passion for bold hatred that no longer festers behind closed doors. Like I say to my friends, they were always there - itās just now that they feel emboldened to show their true colours without fear of consequence. Itās good to know who youāre up against on the flip side.

Rants about how Iāve ādeniedā white men a wife by marrying outside my race. Threats that I shouldnāt have kids with my husband. Disgusting fantasies from men who tell me they hope my husband murders me because āitās in his natureā and I deserve it. Comments about how itās such a shame that a pretty girl would āthrow herself awayā. Men in my real life making overtures and outwardly assuming I would rather be with them than my husband because theyāre white. Men Iāve known for years and had thought WAY telling me itās an insult to all white men that I chose to be with a Latino man.

A lot of these dudes aren't actually getting the hate from their parents or grandparents. They're getting it from alt-right social media accounts, manosphere podcasts, and stuff like that. There's tons of young men today who were raised in tolerant or even progressive households, but then during their teens or early 20s they fell down some internet rabbit hole that radicalized them into crazy alt-right stuff.
I'm pretty sure these guys are attempting to be influencers and so are signing up for this role in order to gain followers. Whether they actually believe these things are not doesn't matter, what matters is that these were selected for this show and is not an honest representation of who we are.

This is not passed in families. This type of rhetoric is pushed in online spaces to the terminally online and aggrieved. This type of thinking should have been exterminated from public discourse due to people being shamed by the communities around them. I grew up in a similar situation. I was constantly exposed to racism and homophobia being casually dropped in conversation. Letting it shape you is a choice. I live my life as anti-racist and anti-homphobic as I can. People are people. No need to slap labels on them and use it as a reason to treat them as lesser.
People may have hoped that, but it hasnāt gone away. It wasnāt magically fixed when we elected the first Black president. These people feel emboldened to say out loud, with their full chest, what theyāve been thinking all along.
That said, the hope is not futile, itās just not as easy to bring about as people wished. That doesnāt mean stop trying.

Here's the thing: you been telling certain people they are are racists for decades.
