Intro Post 44F - let’s go out to punk shows

I’ve lived here for a while but few of my friends are into live music and my partner’s picky about shows. I’m into other stuff like garage, noise, jangle rock, dark wave (I was calling it nü wave, lol). I play in bands and like it when people dance so I’ll get up there, shake with the beat or even get in a not-too-rowdy pit. Or on the edge of the pit and help keep people upright. Age is irrelevant, aside from possibilities of 21+ shows. Anyway, who’s with me?

And, there’s this for you all and the mods:

-age, identified gender and pronouns
44F (she/her)

-hobbies/interests
Listening to and playing music (guitar, bass, competent-ish drums). All-time faves are R.E.M., Guided By Voices, the Pixies, Unwound. Reading a wide range of stuff. Lately I’ve been real into David Foster Wallace, popular science and mathematics (though I did terribly in school math, go figure), some classics (Pride and Prejudice was delightful! And doing a Garden of Earthly Delights jigsaw puzzle got me to finally start the Divine Comedy). I just devoured the first Dungeon Crawler Carl.

-recent shows and movies
In an effort to drastically reduce my screen time I don’t watch a lot anymore. Recently, though, I dug Resident Alien (which is over now; THis IS SOme BULLshit!) and this birdwatching documentary Listers. All-time faves are stuff like Terry Gilliam movies, Big Lebowski, Lost, House, Newsradio, the Simpsons, Arrested Development.

-what you like to do with friends
I’m real into activities; gimme a purpose. Like the live music thing. Or playing music, pinball, chasing after a ball in a pickup indoor soccer game? I’m in.

-whether you're chill, active, into deep-talk etc.
Yes, yes and yes.

-exclusions (drugs, alcohol, etc)
No hard drugs. I don’t do cannabis anymore cause it wrecks my sleep but you can. I drink way less now but can still hang with moderate consumers of booze. After all, as the Kids in the Hall say; I’m hip, I’m cool, I’m 45.

25 coming in January

Hey everyone! I’m Luca, 25, and I’ll be moving to Portland in January,I’m hoping to meet new people and build some genuine friendships.

I’d describe myself as funny, creative, and definitely not boring. Fair warning: there’s a good chance your stomach will hurt from laughing if we hang out. I enjoy making people laugh and trying new things.

I also enjoy hiking, camping, road trips, board games, coffee, and exploring new places.

If you’re looking for a new friend or want to hang out, grab coffee, or go on an adventure, feel free to send me a DM!

Intro Post 25 TM visiting in August

Hey all! I'm Ray, and I'm a 25 year old trans man from NJ that's been craving a visit to Portland for a long time. I'm a musician and songwriter, and big fan of the Decemberists. I'm flying out next month from the 4th to the 9th to check out as many open mic nights as I can and attend a literature talk happening by Colin Meloy. I'll also be hanging in a lot of coffeeshops lol I'm a therapist and doctoral student, so I'll have plenty of things I'll have to get done haha. I'm always looking to make connections, especially in music and maybe open mic nights, so feel free to DM if you might wanna connect!

24 y/o trans guy into writing, reading, birdwatching, cooking, film, etc.

Hello all ! I'm a 24 year old trans guy who moved up here about a year ago & am looking to make new friends. I live with my best friend & she & I recently came to the realization that we share all of our friends, so we're each looking for our "own" friends. The reason I'm posting here is because my best friend has had a lot of success with it. ( I sort of ghostwrote her post for her because she's shy, haha. )

I live a pretty quiet life. I have a teaching degree / license, but choose to work as a substitute instead so I can have more time off ( currently off for the summer right now ). What I love to do most with my free time is write, however I've been experiencing brutal writer's block & am in this odd space where the first thing I think to mention about myself when I meet someone is that I write while simultaneously writing nothing. I don't have any grand ambitions with my writing despite being told that it's good. For the most part, I try to capture the mundane parts of my life diaristically, though I am also cautiously experimenting with poetry & have been gently holding a few poems in my mouth without biting down. Part of my interest in making new friends is that I think it will help me write / overcome my writer's block.

There's this Taiwanese performance artist I deeply respect named Tehching Hsieh who did a piece in which he vowed not to make any art for an entire calendar year, to not even look at art or to talk about it. When I read about this & applied it to myself & to my writing, it sounded impossible. If you have similar thoughts regarding you & your art, I think we may get along.

Outside of my writing, I enjoy many things. I'm very interested in reading / literature ( though I often apply what I read to my writing ) & some of my favorite books are Crime & Punishment, A Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe, Snow Country by Yasunari Kawabata, Franny & Zooey by JD Salinger, The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Tolstoy, Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto, & The Road by Cormac McCarthy among many others. I also enjoy reading about Christianity / Christian apologetics.

Similar to my interest in reading, I'm also interested in film, though I haven't seen many movies & consider myself more of a novitiate. Some of my favorites are The Piano Teacher (2001), First Reformed (2017), Winter Light (1963), Diary of a Country Priest (1951), The Seventh Seal (1957), I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020), I Saw the TV Glow (2024), & Little Miss Sunshine. I'm trying to watch through Ingmar Bergman's movies as he's currently my favorite directors.

One of my main interests outside of art is birdwatching. I'm currently experiencing rheumatoid arthritis and have been mostly bedbound / couchbound for the past month ( my entire summer break ), but when I'm feeling well, I love to go on long hikes & look for birds. There's this electric feeling I get when finding a new bird that I can't replicate in writing & I think it's a type of love. It's one of the things I enjoy the most & being unable to do it lately has made me feel very sad. I would love to meet more people interested in birding.

To avoid writing too much, I also enjoy: being outdoors, cooking / eating, coffee, learning to play chess ( very recent, still very, very bad at it ), writing to my penpals & doing postcard exchanges. I'd describe myself as an easygoing & novelty seeking person, so really I'd just like to meet new people, see new places, & experience new things. I'm okay with people of all ages as I think our society lacks intergenerational friendships. If you think we'd get along or are interested in talking, please DM me.
