Make r/Platinum great again

There's a genuinely great community here and we want to build something worth checking every day. But before we start making changes, we want to hear from the people who actually use it.

So tell us:

- What would make you visit this sub daily instead of once a month?

- What topics do you want more of? Prices, investing, mining, industrial uses, jewelry, something else?

- What do you hate seeing here?

- Is there another subreddit doing something you wish we did?

One thing we're already planning: a weekly Coin (or purchase) of the Week post. Each week the community will have the option to post their most recent Platinum purchases, and will have the chance for their post to become "Coin / purchase of the week" depending on who got the most approval / upvotes from the community

Could be a Maple Leaf, a Koala, a Pamp bar, whatever the community finds most interesting that week. We're ofc also open to suggestions / changes for that idea, its not set in stone.

We have a lot of ideas but this is your community and we'd rather build what you want than assume we know better.

Drop your thoughts below. We appreciate every idea!

What is the best purchase?

I’m starting to buy platinum as another PM. I saw a generic 1oz bar for $1645 and a 1oz US coin with the Statue of Liberty on it for $1749. I know coins cost more but just to get one or the other, what is the right move?

Looking for insights on platinum as long term savings

I personally believe it's important to hold a portion of wealth in precious metals to protect against inflation & counter-party risk. I don't have any confusion around gold & silver, but I'm having some difficulties wrapping my head around platinum. I figured someone on this sub could possibly enlighten me and tell me what I'm missing.

I understand that historical ratios are in favor of platinum right now, however I'm also thinking that the auto industry portion of the industrial use is going to become more and more irrelevant as vehicles move towards EVs; especially with current events in the oil market. While platinum is a precious metal, it's not really considered a monetary metal, so I don't see a liquidity angle.

I do see that platinum is affected by the supply deficits and under-investment like gold/silver, but weighing it all out I can't see why I would go for platinum over gold/silver. I am not trying to bag on the metal, I figure I'm missing something and that's why I can't see it.

Thanks

New Platty Perth Horse - am i the only one excited about this 1/10th?

We don't really have a LOT of options when it comes to fractional Platinum pieces, and honestly really glad to see a new piece like this released and available. In the world of 1/10ths, there are the (overpriced but worth it when budget permits) American Eagles, Koalas and Kooks, and probably my least favorite the Brits (too small, low detail, not overly interesting). I know there's others, but generally speaking these seem to be the top ones for sale/popular within the marketplace. Really glad to see this Horse released, and tbh the price here is pretty fair. Nice low mintage, honestly gorgeous design, and nice use of contrasting finishes.

Used non-BU Brits sell for $190-200 all day, and this new Perth release for another ~$10 is very reasonable for us mid-tier stackers. (and apparently Exclusive to SD at this time?) Got a few on the way, and will post an update here once they arrive. might do some side by sides with the eagle, kooks, koala, and brits if anyone wants to see it and deep-dive with me.

Overall, just glad to see private mint putting R&D into fractional Platinum. Post-parabolic times, i think it's a good time to pay attention to what all of the top mints are doing with their (likely) record-breaking profits. Now is the time to observe what they are putting efforts into, as this is their best guess as to where the industry is going, and what decision now will position them to be sitting pretty 5-15yr from now. Jump in the comments with any other thoughts or observations!

The COMEX Vault Drain Conspiracy

Over the past several months I've been digging into the unusual activity in not only silver prices, but also the broader precious metal and critical mineral markets, including: the major vault drains, the record delivery volumes, and the price volatility, in an effort to figure out whether there's a real story here or just noise.

Along the way I started looking at some major critical minerals initiatives established by the U.S. government, like Project Vault, and the DoD's National Defense Stockpile, in addition to China's export licensing regime, and I found a pattern that, at least to me, looks like more than just a coincidence. The COMEX vaults have been draining and refilling in ways that line up suspiciously well with major geopolitical events (the Iran war, China's rare earth restrictions, Trump's state visit to China, etc.), while the government's own stockpile of critical minerals has barely grown in decades despite their repeated flagging of massive shortfalls. I also dug into the math on what COMEX actually holds versus what the DoD stockpile holds, and it's a wide gap.

This post lays out that connection, walks through the numbers behind it, and ends with a list of companies that are both publicly traded in the U.S. and tied to the minerals in question (from a production standpoint), to help prepare us all for the very possible necessity of supply-chain independence. None of this should be taken as investment advice: it's just my own research and my own theory, which I'm putting out there for others to poke holes in, add to, or shoot down entirely. Take it for what it's worth and please do your own digging before drawing any conclusions.

Views are my own and not in any way endorsed by my employer. Our firm is neither involved in, nor positioned in, any of the securities or companies mentioned. None of the information in this post, or elsewhere on my page, should at any point ever be misconstrued as neither investment nor financial advice. Please be sure to do your own research, always.

abrdn Physical Platinum Shares ETF

Adding a precious metal ETF to one's investment portfolio is a very good idea. This acts to both diversify and hedge your investments. Many investors are already quite familiar with hold and silver ETFs. However, platinum is rarely ever thought about as a precious metal ETF to add to one's portfolio.

One major platinum ETF is the abrdn Physical Platinum Shares ETF. Unfortunately, this platinum ETF isn't really ready for primetime.

Looking at this ETF's historical price returns shows that there really has never been a great time to invest in this particular asset.

Here is the historical data for the abrdn platinum ETF from the years 2010-2025:

Total Return: 5.85%

Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR): 0.38%

Geometric Standard Deviation (GSD): 29.99%

Risk-adjusted Return (CAGR/GSD): 0.01%

1-year CAGR: 124.31%

3-year CAGR: 23.36%

5-year CAGR: 13.11%

10-year CAGR: 8.07%

Now, just looking at this raw data, it shows that for this 15 year period one's compounded annual return would have been a very tiny 0.38%. But, the volatility -- or, "risk" -- would have had swings of 29.99% and a risk-adjusted return of a puny 0.01%.

So, generally, just looking at the numbers, the abrdn platinum ETF would have not been a good investment.

However, the 1-year and 3-year and 5-year and 10-year periods look deceptively positive, as those periods show increasing growth. But, again, the over all return has been poor.

At this point, it's probably much more prudent to stick with gold and silver ETFs.

Any trustworthy places to buy men platinum hoops?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello there, I’ve been wanting to buy plain men platinum hoop earrings, at least 2.5 mm thick, solid (not hollow), 10 mm inner diameter, 12.5+ mm outer diameter.
The thing is, the only shop I found with the ideal model I am looking for is https://www.astrozie.com/, which is legally based in the UK but has its laboratory in china.
Does anybody have any direct experience with them? Are they trustworthy?
On a side note, I would be more comfortable buying directly from a Chinese retailer, since my family is partly based in china; does anyone have any in mind?

Sliver Summary This Year 2025 to 2026

In 2025 silver was at the normal amount of 50 bucks .But when trump put tariffs on the world it sky rocket to 70 bucks in the US . And the silver price remains at 70 bucks . It was slowly creepingĀ  till it sky rocket over 63.50% percent because of sliver shortage. Then when people were selling silverĀ  itĀ  went down. The wall street journal said that sliver will remain to go down back to the normal 50 bucks. In my eyes I see that silver is a high risk and low reward buy. If you are planningĀ  to buy silver right now I suggest you wait to get silver as low as 50 to 55 bucks. In conclusion this is the summary for silver this year.Ā

Reference From Google Gemini, The wall street journal, Youtube, Barchart.com, and yahoofinance.comĀ Ā Ā

Remember I am just a secondary source some of my sources will probably not be correct in your eyes remember Iam just a small journal stock market person.Ā
Just doing in for fun bye hope you have a nice day

The dip last week was able to get this *barely under $500 and couldn’t pass it up! Though my 1/10th APEs aren’t my favorite coin, gotta say this new 1/4 looks a lot better/clearer detail than expected, and might have a new appreciation for the Platinum Eagles. Mainly stick to gold with some silver, but enjoying this Platinum tangent lately.

Keep or send to refinery

I've got ~1800 of these little foils (0.015g each). I'm debating on if I could keep them as is or if I should just send them to a refinery.

When I eventually go to resell I'm wondering if there's any market for tiny pieces, kinda like goldbacks.

Mail call - 1/3 ozs

Picked up a couple random 1/3oz pieces. I was surprised the premiums on these were less than getting a whole ounce.

I was going to get a full ounce but I saw these came out with less premium. Are 1/3 oz pieces not as popular? Or did JM bullion just happen to have a better deal for this fractional?

Also snagged my first palladium gram.

Happy stacking šŸŖ™
