Don't Let Reddit Kill 3rd Party Apps!

What's going on?

A recent Reddit policy change threatens to kill many beloved third-party mobile apps, making a great many quality-of-life features not seen in the official mobile app permanently inaccessible to users. On May 31, 2023, Reddit announced they were raising the price to make calls to their API from being free to a level that will kill every third party app on Reddit, from Apollo to Reddit is Fun to Narwhal to BaconReader. Even if you're not a mobile user and don't use any of those apps, this is a step toward killing other ways of customizing Reddit, such as Reddit Enhancement Suite or the use of the old.reddit.com desktop interface . This isn't only a problem on the user level: many subreddit moderators depend on tools only available outside the official app to keep their communities on-topic and spam-free.

What's the plan?

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed, since many moderators aren't able to put in the work they do with the poor tools available through the official app. This isn't something any of us do lightly: we do what we do because we love Reddit, and we truly believe this change will make it impossible to keep doing what we love. The two-day blackout isn't the goal, and it isn't the end. Should things reach the 14th with no sign of Reddit choosing to fix what they've broken, we'll use the community and buzz we've built between then and now as a tool for further action.

What can you do?

  1. Complain. Message the mods of /r/reddit.com, who are the admins of the site: message /u/reddit: submit a support request: comment in relevant threads on /r/reddit, such as this one, leave a negative review on their official iOS or Android app- and sign your username in support to this post.

  2. Spread the word. Rabble-rouse on related subreddits. Meme it up, make it spicy. Bitch about it to your cat. Suggest anyone you know who moderates a subreddit join us at our sister sub at /r/ModCoord- but please don't pester mods you don't know by simply spamming their modmail.

  3. Boycott and spread the word...to Reddit's competition! Stay off Reddit entirely on June 12th through the 13th- instead, take to your favorite non-Reddit platform of choice and make some noise in support!

  4. Don't be a jerk. As upsetting this may be, threats, profanity and vandalism will be worse than useless in getting people on our side. Please make every effort to be as restrained, polite, reasonable and law-abiding as possible.

advice needed- best place to sell a beater car in PGH?

Hi neighbors. I have a 2002 Subaru Forester that I need to get rid of. ~130000 miles on it. It is still technically drivable but the state inspection expired in Feb of 2026. It won’t pass inspection without a lot of work. There is a little body damage on the front passenger side. Even tho I don’t expect to get much for the car, I wanna sell it to save up for a different beater car that will be able to last me a little longer than this one. If you have any advice of where to start let me know. Thanks!

LF Picklesburgh PRT Hat

TLDR I want PRT hat, offer is bolded and italicized.

Hey guys. I'm pretty much only attending Picklesburgh to get free stuff, and I ESPECIALLY need a hat from the PRT booth. The workers wouldn't accept my bribe and I couldn't win it fairly on Thursday or today (they were closed on Friday which I found out the hard way; not complaining, this entire event should've been canceled!).

So naturally I am offering $15 and any drink at Picklesburgh OR $30. I can also offer one of the PRT Cooling Towels OR PRT drawstring bag for trade and $15. I am willing to accept any counter offers.

I have a weird hyperfixation on merch like that so I'm like literally leaving the festival as soon as I get an opportunity to hop on the bus since I didn't get it today. I'll be here for maybe two more hours tops today (willing to come back downtown today), and I'll be here in the morning tomorrow (and also willing to come back).

Offer is open until I get one. Obviously if Picklesburgh ends before I get it I'll still offer the cash

looking for apartment in Monroeville area

Hi everyone, I’m in need of some help trying to find an apartment right now. Leaving a relationship and need somewhere to move, hopefully soon. I have a roommate lined up, but I applied somewhere and got denied. I’m assuming it’s because my credit isn’t the best because of stupid fuck ups. My fear is getting continually denied and end up with no where to go. I’m hoping that someone here can help me out. I’m looking for a two bedroom that allows pets and hoping to stay around $1300 or less (which I know is hard to find rn). I would like to stay in the Monroeville area, as I work on the northside and have family not far away that I need to be able to get quickly to in case of an emergency. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

substitute for estate sale?

what if you wanted to have an estate sale but it's not feasible as it's a rented studio apartment. there's a good bit of stuff to sell but running an estate sale out of an apartment in the city seems difficult. any other solutions for selling a large quantity of items at once?

Driver to St Mary’s M,Tu, F

I’m looking for someone to drive me from Squirrel Hill to St. May’s PA this week for work each day of Monday (7/13), Tuesday (7/14), and/or Friday (7/17). Pickup would be about 4:30AM, it’s about a 2 1/2 hour 115 mile ride each way. I’d be at work for about 9 hours during which you are free to do whatever you want, including take other riders. Then back home. Overall about 5 hours of driving 230 miles in a 14 hour day. Paying $400 each day with all included. DM me.

Moving to pittsburgh, need some help with house hunting!!

Hi everyone, I’m moving to Pittsburgh soon for a new job, and my workplace will be located in the Strip District. I won’t have a car, so I’m mainly looking for areas with good public transit access and walkability.

I was looking into Allegheny Center/Park View Apartments because the location seemed convenient, especially with transit connections and affordable. However, I’ve heard mixed opinions about the area and wanted to get some local insight.

For someone who works in the Strip District and prefers a safe, convenient neighborhood with access to transit, which areas would you recommend? Are there any neighborhoods I should avoid or consider?

I’m looking for a studio or small apartment and would ideally like to stay around $1,500/month, but I’m mainly trying to understand which areas are worth considering.

Thanks for any advice!!

One-On-Centre 17th Floor (2B2B) Apartment - Looking for someone to officially (management-approved) takeover lease for one room. (Monetary incentive to be discussed!!!)

Post image
3 Upvotes

I was going to pursue a Master's Degree at CMU, but due to personal circumstances, have decided otherwise. I am looking for someone to takeover my lease with One-On-Centre.

Here are the apartment unit details:

  • 17th floor of building (top floor!!!)
  • In-unit washer and dryer
  • Your own bedroom
  • Your own private room-attached bathroom and closet
  • Corner unit with great views!!
  • Set my personal living preferences to: organized, clean, etc.
  • Less than a mile to CMU!
  • I can work out the monetary incentive over DMs, and then officiate it through the official management of the One-On-Centre.

This would be an official lease takeover handled through the property management office. The new tenant will need to apply and meet management’s income, credit and screening requirements.

Please contact me through Reddit DM's if you are interested!

Varsity Tennis Student Athlete offering stringing/hitting services

Hey everyone!

I'm an incoming freshman at CMU this fall and a recruit for the tennis team. Wanted to offer stringing services to anyone who'd rather not drive out to a shop or pay pro-shop prices.

Stringing: You can bring your own string or pick from what I keep on hand. My turnaround is usually 2-3 days, and I can meet on the CMU campus for drop-off and pickup. I'm happy to help you figure out the tension or string type if you're unsure about what you want.

Hitting: I'm also up to hit if you're looking for a partner! As for my credentials, I am an 11.4 UTR (singles and doubles), 4-Star recruit, and was top 175 in the country in 18U singles and top 50 in the country in 18U Doubles.

DM me if you are interested, and we can discuss times and rates.

2 bed, 2 bath apartment Squirrel Hill - rental

Sharing here in case anyone is looking for housing in Squirrel Hill. I have loved living here and am only breaking my lease because I'm moving away from Pgh. Easy access to several bus lines (Wilkins) and walkable to Frick Park (both FEC and Reynolds St), 15 min walk from Murray/Forbes commercial district.

The apartment itself is nicely updated, spacious, amazing light. 2 bed, 2 bath, in user washer/dryer, AC, 1 parking space around back but easy street parking as well. Rent $2250 + utilties - which I found to be a pretty good deal for Sq Hill/the quality of the apartment.
