Pickering documentary “Hooves Up!” wins Niagara film festival award and will screen locally July 25
A new documentary examining political division, misinformation and the community response to controversial Pickering Councillor Lisa Robinson is receiving recognition on the Canadian film festival circuit.
Pickering filmmaker Brenda Holdsworth’s first feature documentary, Hooves Up!, won Best Future Documentary at the 2026 Niagara Canada International Film Festival in June.
The film follows how Pickering residents and city council responded to misinformation and political conflict beginning in 2022. It uses real footage, public records and community voices to reconstruct the events, presented through drag storyteller and newscaster Yvonna Vote and a unicorn community activist named Glitter.
Since 2023, Robinson has received nine salary suspensions following nine separate integrity commissioner reports finding that she breached Pickering council’s Code of Conduct. The documentary also looks beyond Pickering at organized efforts to influence municipal councils and school boards on diversity and inclusion issues.
This is particularly relevant to Pickering’s upcoming municipal election because Robinson is now a registered candidate for mayor of Pickering, having filed her nomination on May 29, 2026.
Holdsworth said the film’s creative format was intended to reach people who might not ordinarily watch a documentary about municipal politics.
The film has now been selected to compete for Best Feature Documentary at the Pickering International Film Festival.
Screening is happening on Saturday, July 25, 2026, at 12:00 p.m.
Whatever your political views, residents deserve to understand the conduct, controversies and political movements that have shaped their city, especially when one of the documentary’s central figures is asking voters to elect her as mayor.

I’m turning 30 F in a couple weeks and feel very down and would like to meet someone. I go out to the grocery store, here and there but no luck finding anyone.
Any suggestions on where to go or what to do?

We sold our house and are now looking to rent a place on a month to month basis as we wait to find our long term home. Very good and steady salary, family of 3.
Preferably a whole place and not someone's basement. Does anyone have any leads on a place or have a place they would like to rent?
Air bnbs are astronomical but most are basements.

My neighbor had an issue with their garage door being stuck, which required fixing immediately. But they simply picked up the first company they came across on Google, although they regretted not taking some more time to consider other options.
I was curious to know how people living in Pickering choose the right garage door repair company. Are you using Google reviews, your neighbors’ recommendations, or Facebook groups to pick one of them?
How did you find the most reliable option?
Update: Someone recently suggested Motion Garage Doors as one option to look into because they mentioned the company offers garage door repair, installation, and maintenance services. I haven't used them personally, so would like to hear if anyone has experience with them.

Hi everyone! My partner and I are moving to Pickering this summer, and we'd love your recommendations on the best places to eat, shop, grab a coffee, or walk our dog.
We're also looking for ways to get involved in the community. Are there any hobby clubs, fitness classes, volunteer opportunities, or local groups you'd recommend? We don't have kids and don't know anyone in Pickering yet, so we're excited to meet people and make the most of everything this beautiful community has to offer.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

Hey all,
A few hours I was driving around and noticed at least 7 or 9 EMS vehicles (cops and fire trucks) gathered in front of the Wingstop at the plaza with the Home Depot by Kingston and Dixie.
Does anyone know what happened? Hopefully nothing too serious went down :(

Family of four (two girls, one starting third grade and other one SK) looking to move to Dunbarton community. Kids will be in William Dunbar school, but Im worried reading about the bomb threats and lock downs.
Is this now under control? Anyone have some good things to say about William Dunbar? I see the ratings are quite high.
Which grades are in portables?
We are moving from Europe, and we have never had schools with portables or lock downs where we come from.
We are looking at houses in Appleview road. Are there many young kids around that area?
Any feedback or thoughts on the school and area much appreciated

Hi everyone
I may be moving to the area from Northern Ontario at the end of summer and I have 2 neurodivergent sons (9 & 7) who have been attending a local Catholic school.
Their school has been nothing short of the VERY best for them, especially my 7-year-old who has significant challenges.
His school referred him to a program at a different school in our current city that is called the "Care & Treatment program" for children who's mental health gets in the way of their ability to learn. It is meant to help him navigate social interactions, sensory overload & self-expression when he's dysregulated (as well as basic math, english & science lessons for his grade level). This classroom will have 6-8 children total, with a teacher, EA & therapist present at all times. They will also have more frequent "field trips" (basic outings) to help teach the children how to behave/navigate themselves in a public setting.
We've been excited for this program, but with the prospect of potentially having to move, I'm worried we won't be able to find anything like this anywhere else.
Does anyone know of any sort of program that could be similar based out of any of the schools in the area? It doesn't have to be Catholic, we just chose that one because it had a higher allotment for children with differing needs.
Any help would be great! Thank you!

Hi ya'll.
I've been thinking about hosting a board game night here in Pickering. I myself have no board games, nor do I have played a lot of them either. But this feels like a good time to do it.
I would love some suggestions on whats the best place to host it and if anyones interested in doing this at all.
Lmkkk!
