QUESTION Getting back to PP, DLCs?

12 Upvotes

Hey folks,

I played Phoenix Point some time ago, I remember liking it but I didn't continue playing for whatever reason.

I want to go back now and I notice there are 3 DLCs. Kaos Engines seem to have decent reviews but Corrupt Horizons is mixed and Festering Skies is Mostly Negative.

What's the feeling over Reddit? Do you guys like them, hate them? Can I disable them? Anything to consider?

Finished first playthrough, want to share opinion

27 Upvotes

Hi. Finished first playthrough and have some opinions that I want to share. Played on Rookie because was scared by reviews regarding overall difficulty, but from what I understood difficulty really affected mainly only amount of grind needed, as fights in theory should be the same on all difficulties. Also didn't have any mods, partially because half of the time I played on Steam Deck and don't know if it's even possible to mods there, and partially because I wanted to try base game first. For DLCs I had Living Weapong and Blood and Titanium.

Overall I liked game and enjoyed playing it.

Here are the things I liked:

  1. Atmosphere. Really liked the atmosphere of horror that game managed to cultivate, especially in early stages;
  2. Class diversity. Firstly I was dissapointed that there are only 3 classes, but unlocking faction ones and understanding combinations really opened my eyes to wast ocean of tactical diversity available;
  3. Geoscape. I liked how slowly my influence on world map was groving and how increasing zone of responsibility pushed me into using multiple squads. Only the navigations of globe itself was a bit annoying;
  4. Targeting system. Being able to choose at what part of enemy to shoot both provided a fresh feeling and followed the tradition of allowing misses in situations when it shouldn't be possible;
  5. Action points. Ability to choose on what actions to spend my action points really improved taclical flexibility and was very well integrated together with weapon variations and skills.

But there are also some things that I didn't particularly like:

  1. Class balance. Some classes are must have and are core of most strong build (Assault and Berserker), while others really feel bad by themselfes and work much better as an addition to other classed (Heavy and Infiltrator). At least that's how it feels;
  2. Vehicles. I was honeslty dissapointed with vehicles. They just don't provide enough value to take up places of 3 normal agents. I personally didn't see utility in them outside of scavenging missions. Unfortunately, the same goes for mutated good boys;
  3. Enemy aestetics. The biggest diversity in basic pandoran enemies goes from guns that they are using. And even though it makes them distinctly different from one another role-vise, it kinda doesn't work with general outerwordly aestetics. At least in my opinion it would be better if most of their weapons were more natural and only few used guns;
  4. Maps. It became very clear that there are not a lot of maps and that they are just repeating again and again;
  5. Lack of linear progression. I understand that it's a design choise to make progression more about tactical diversity rather then straight power ups, but still I missed the feeling of my agents becoming dirrectly stronger. This one is just personal prefference and not a critique in any way.

That will be it. And again, as I mentioned earlier, I liked the game and enjoyed the time spent with it. In future I'm planning to play again, this time with all DLCs and with TftV.

Just wanted to share my opinion. Thank you for reading

QUESTION First play through, one minor issue/question

9 Upvotes

First, let me say I have experience with several x-coms in the past, and usually found them doable or even easy.

At first it seemed this way for PP too(playing on veteran), but I have hit a difficulty spike. At any rate, it doesn't feel impossible to beat yet, though I noticed I have to reload missions in order to avoid having my strongest guys being killed off. Which I hate, as I despise save scumming.

Normally, in x-com, by this point I would have unlocked better weapons, however despite being able to research for all three factions and getting all kinds of new weapons, I have noticed that all these weapons do essentially the same amount of damage. There is no "stronger tier", at least, not yet.

Thus my question, will such weapons eventually be unlocked, or is this the best I will get? Do I really need to hit a single enemy 6 times(and all of the hits actually hitting) to kill it throughout the rest of the campaign?

p.s.: forgot to mention, I have disabled all DLCs that came with the game

QUESTION Recommend me the best YT Let’s Play/Walk-through for this game you’ve seen.

11 Upvotes

Looking to experience the whole game via a walkthrough/Let’s Play by someone who is great at it.

Kind of person who doesn’t miss mechanics, has an underlying strategy/build going in, uses smart battlefield tactics, but still is trying to showcase the game as a whole story.

***

Out of dozens of XCOM streamers I’ve watched I’ve only found one who fits the bill for that game. His run was a pure delight to watch. But he’s kind of a unicorn when it comes to this kind of thing. (Unfortunately he hasn’t tackled Phoenix Point yet.) So I understand this may be a tall order.

Unable to Trigger Event After Revenants Capture - TFTV

5 Upvotes

Hi!

Have been playing with TFTV for my current play-through. I have faced several times the "revenants" of soldiers who died from my side and I am prompted to capture them.

Thing is, I have captured them and once they are at the containment they turn into a normal "Arthron" or "Triton", no special event gets triggered, and they have reappeared in other missions as if I never captured them.

Has anyone have had the same bug? / Knows how to fix it?

Thanks!

Early thoughts on TFTV vs Vanilla - Great gameplay changes, mediocre worldbuilding additions

22 Upvotes

I've recently run about 6 hours in vanilla and now about 4 in TFTV and thought I'd give my early impressions.

Gameplay: TFTV seems like a clear and obvious improvement. Classes and their abilities make more sense, the mechanics work together a bit better, the blackmarket seems a lot more useful, etc.

Worldbuilding & Lore: So far I haven't been impressed with the quality of the writing that has been added by this mod. Writing well is difficult and I am highly critical as a reader so consider that when assessing my opinion here. The tone is way off (I mean come on, "Fort Bacon"? Really?) and whoever is writing the new content doesn't seem to understand when you should write in active vs passive voice etc. All the additional writing so far comes across as very "online millenial social media board" style.

I will still stick with TFTV as the gameplay improvements are substantial but all the additional lore I've read so far I've found pretty unimpressive and a step down from the base game.

QUESTION Best beginner tips?

12 Upvotes

What are your best tips for beginners to this game? Assume base game + all dlcs.

Try and make them true beginner tips rather than intermediate tips if possible.

I have played Xcom2 WOTC, Chaosgate:Daemonhunters, Battle Brothers, Invisible Inc, etc so I am familiar with this style of game generally.

Need a little help

9 Upvotes

So I have some bases that are activated that I can’t move to. It says it’s too far. The map is getting really red. There’s no missions I can reach because they say they’re too far. I have no resources to put any more satellites on the bases. So am I screwed? Do I just start a new game now?

Patch (v1.30.2) has arrived.

24 Upvotes

EDIT: The topic title is a bit off... I believe it's a v1.30.2.1

Firebird Update 2 Hotfix, as you can see from: https://steamdb.info/patchnotes/24017683/ , it's also supposedly coming to GoG and Epic Store 's, or has already.
There is no word on the Console update yet, but if no new bugs happen, it's likely that the Console update is next.

QUESTION Can someone share resources on how to get really good at the game?

4 Upvotes

I have hundreds of hours, but I feel like I'm still missing out on an entire layer of min-maxing. I beat the game on Hero with a lot of saving and reloading, but the hardest setting is still whooping my ass. I know the basics, I know which abilities are good and bad, and I vaguely know what equipment I should be using.

I'm still struggling with highly armoured enemies, or how to build my squads, how to build each class, which mutations are good and bad, fighting synedrion and new jericho if I want to steal an aircraft, or what buildings in my bases I should prioritise.

Do you have any high-level guides and tricks I can use? Thanks in advance.

QUESTION Corruption is incredibly annoying

21 Upvotes

I'm most of the way through the campaign (my first playthrough) and have run out of the purple resource needed to cure corruption off my squad. Capturing aliens is a massive pain in the ass and you often get it just for engaging in nest missions. Doesn't feel fun at all.

I don't want to do the busywork of capturing aliens every few missions to cure my squad. Is there another way to get mutagen? Or is there a mod I can use that makes curing free?

Phoenix Point Success (?)

42 Upvotes

Hi guys, I am a lover of tactical combat genre and after having played Xcom2 and several others, I always come back to Phoenix Point. The way the combat works, allowing you to free aim, to hit some bullets and miss others, as well as how the body parts work is just too great to miss.

Now, in my opinion, due to those reasons, this is the best game in the genre I've ever played. I don't really understand why it hasn't been recognized as such. What is your opinion about it? Am I too biased? I have the feeling that the game was left aside too early, and would have benefited a lot of a greater playerbase/more DLCs, etc.

Anyone keeping a list of games with the base managment and tactical missions?

I liked PP's structure more than the actual gameplay if i'm honest. Found Warhounds on steam: same loop but mercenary setting, and they're advertising real ballistics instead of hit percentages. Curious if anyone here has been following it

BUG Research Tab Grayed out In game breaking bug.

1 Upvotes

So apparently there is long standing game breaking bug where the Research Tab is grayed out ( can’t be used) whenever you play the optional in game tutorial mission. Any way to circumvent the issue without starting a new game and skipping the tutorial missions.

I’m on console so I can’t you console commands to easily fix the issue.

It got me even harder than Factorio or XCOM: Apocalypse. A truly underrated masterpiece. Deployed to a "medium" difficulty haven defense. Got Scyla for the first time in the game. For my noob B team. With shred resistance. Without the priest, everyone would have died.

Terror from the Void W/O aerial combat?

Is there any way to get rid of the retarded air to air combat in TFTV? I was thoroughly enjoying the mod, they suddenly this train wreck kicked in and spoiled the game.

QUESTION Are there any mods that allows you to use captured Pandorans as allied units in combat?

8 Upvotes

Title speaks for itself, i really plan on getting PP for myself but I feel like the Pandorans seem more fun that typical soldiers, anyone know of any mods that can let me enslave utilize them?

Edit: to elaborate, I'm aiming for what the guy who did the "know your enemy" videos has (He can control Pandoran entities as if they were players for the sake of showing what eatch of their abilities does) going on for him
