A new list coming out of Violet Hold. Hunter got the best new pauper card by a long shit with Underbelly Network which will hopefully lead to its return to the pauper meta. A draw two for 2 with bodies would be good for any class, and Hunter has always struggled with efficient draw in pauper, making this instantly the best draw effect in the class; it'll doubtless be run in every single pauper hunter from now on.

As for this list in particular, Tremors Hunter is a midrange OTK deck that can play a midrange game against aggro or otk with 30+ damage against control. Being the namesake of the deck, Tremors is really what enables us to pull off our otk, alongside Tundra Rhina and Supply Run. One Tremors with Rhino and Supply Run gets us to 28 damage, and that's only the floor of how high the damage can go if we need to get through Warrior armor. It's for this reason that our best matchup is control. As for aggro, we need to draw Hollow Hound or bust. The hound is like a Reno Jackson combined with a wipe after you buff it with a supply run and practically wins on the turn it comes down, the only issue is surviving to cast it.

Overall the deck is a lot of fun to play and has good matchups across the board. The main thing holding it back is the reliance on certain key cards to win matchups. It's difficult to win against control if supply run is on the bottom of your deck, and the same goes for Hollow Hound into aggro. That being said, you have odds in every matchup, so the decks main strength lies in its versatility and it definitely feels like it's better in the aggro matchup than other OTK decks.

Violet Hold is upon us next week but for now we have another excavate list from me. I'm a huge fan of control in pauper, as it's a real challenge getting it to work. A functional control deck needs three things in order to win games.

1. Sustain. Essentially just ways to heal or gain armor.
2. Removal. Obviously board wipes are crucial, but also hard removal that can delete creatures of any size. This includes silence effects.
3. Win Condition. A good win condition is very difficult for pauper control decks to achieve. It's ok to amass value via random card generation effects, but I find that the truly good control decks have some way to achieve a completely unfair advantage.

In our example today, Shaman has decent lifegain with Chill Vibes being a disgustingly good rate for three mana. Canal Slogger also puts in work here.

As for removal, Malted Magma with Rune Dagger is a brutal boardwipe against decks that want to go wide and you can recur it with Tidepool Pupil for a total beatdown. Funnily enough this is also a decent way to burst out your opponents if the opportunity presents itself. Snowfall Guardian is also a great way to simply stall thee game out, especially combined with Brilliant macaw Digging Straight Down is our single target hard removal, as most threats won't have more than 8 hp but in the case that they do (namely against Handbuff Paladin) we have Revolve to silence and shrink crazy boards.

Finally our win condition, the namesake excavate. Our legendary payoff evolves every card in our deck to a minion of a mana value 3 higher, while retaining the original cost. This is the reason we run Eredar Brute and Snoozin' Zookeeper. Both cards are completely passable in the deck on their own. Eredar Brute has cute tech with Revolve, getting you a random 7 drop for as little as 1 mana, and Snoozin' Zookeeper's battlecry can be repeated with Brilliant Macaw for extra wipes. However they're great once your legendary excavate comes down as there are a lot of crazy 10 drops that can outright win you the game. Ultimately it is a very random win condition and sometimes you can whiff, but I've found the value to generally be enough to win.

This is my favourite midrange deck due to its infinite lategame. It has inevitability into control and lifegain+removal into aggro. If you really wanted to you could probably run some more disruption tools for the combo matchup like Far Watch Outpost.

There are a lot of ways you can build this list. I have seen versions with a greater focus on flooding the deck with portals in order to draw them naturally throughout the course of the game. Personally I prefer to prioritize curving out efficiently and only hero powering incidentally. I usually hero power on my Grillmaster and Sharp-Eyed Seeker turns as they're great tempo plays as well as card draw, even if you've only imbued once. Hold the Bridge is also a surprisingly impactful card, being a huge source of lifegain into aggro and enabling favourable trades.

Pioneered by my mate Lokismokey, this deck started out like many of my brews; as a meme. However it turns out that despite it seeming terrible, there are actually enough good reasons to be doing imbue in DK.

The list is very midrange and tries to play honest hearthstone with above rate creatures. It preys especially on burn decks due to the huge amount of lifesteal at the top end. Hollow Hound with 6+ attack is a budget Reno Jackson, and Gnome Muncher both stabilizes and burns depending on the matchup. The deck also doesn't mind the control matchup, as your creatures just get better and better the longer the game goes on.

This is one of my most fun lists, if not one of my best. It turns out Tame Pet is possible to pull off in pauper, it just takes a lot of work.

Pet Parrot allows us to easily cast more than just two copies of Tame Pet, and Dryscale Deputy into Trinket Tracker also guarantees another copy. Generally speaking, it's best to stop at either 6 or 8 mana with your pet taming, as there are some extremely good high rolls there. That being said, if you ever high roll a beast at any cost, it's a sign to stop taming and start summoning.

The real wincon of the deck is Spiritspeaker alongside every copy of Brewmaster you can find. The deck has great highroll potential but of course is extremely inconsistent, so the rest of our deck is mainly in service of helping us survive to pull off shenanigans.

This is a list I'm really proud of. While I was zoning out at work, it occurred to me that the legendary excavate cards are typed, and from there the next logical step was to use Northshire Farmer to shuffle extra copies into my deck. Hilariously, this turned out to be a legit strategy.

Warlock was the last excavate deck I tried to make. It seemed ridiculous because Warlock is the only class with no excavate cards at common. However through the combined effort of Raise Dead and Brewmaster, I managed to slowly limp my way to four excavates. This turned out to be the best legendary yet, as it's the only one that will inevitably kill your opponent - making it an extremely dependable win condition.

In order to accomodate this slow gameplan, we have to run the best Warlock control tools at common. Dark Pact with mistress of Mixtures is a budget Reno Jackson, and Wing Welding with Aranasi Broodmother is a cute little combo to deal with larger boards. Gaslight Gatekeeper is the latest addition to the list in order to mitigate your worst case scenario of having the Kobold Miners at the bottom of your deck.

This deck is optimized for the aggro matchup and also has good matchups into other control decks due to its inevitability. The OTK matchup is pretty unwinnable, however Warlock does have Demonic Project at common to disrupt combo decks so you could tech against it.

Finally no more pay to win. Just common cards and fair plays.

Starting with a classic. Play every disco card and go face. This deck can get lethal as early as turn 5 under optimal circumstances, however it's extremely inconsistent and can stumble hard. One cute tech is the abyssal curse package which pads out your burn and helps push you over the line to lethal.

Some problems you're probably thinking because we all thought it at first ngl

1. Isn't aggro broken?

NO, aggro is usually very very cheap, which made us have some assumptions, but in reality, the removal, wraths, and lifegain in the format, combined with most of the important card draw and resetting being at rare or above makes aggro punishing for greedy piles, but more than answerable, just like a healthy card game meta should...

1. Well then discover must be broken? I mean you can discover rares, the blasphemy!!

Well, yes discover cards are strong, but they aren't outliers. In general, this isn't a format where you are playing midrange piles of good cards. You have a gameplan, and all the cards in your deck help that plan in some ways. Turns out, a common you get to choose is often stronger than an epic you get randomly.

1. Then X has to be banned right?

Nope, we have no banned list at the moment, we plan to host tournaments at a certain member threshold, and if a list dominates the field, we will look into it for sure! You think somethings broken? Come break it!

1. I mean I wish I could play X, but theres no way it's playable at common...

It probably is. So far most of the deckbuilding has been done by 3 people, and we already have a repo of 30+ decklists! Sure theres a token druid, and a pirate rogue, but we also have Big Shaman, Shockspitter Hunter, Trade Dragons Combo Mage?

Theres a lot of sick decks, and thats with three builders, come try and see what the pauper version of your favorite deck is, without having to spend a ton of dust on it.

First, let me introduce myself.
I've been playing Magic: The Gathering since 1996 and I'm an avid fan of the Pauper format, since it's a format that resembles a lot the old M:TG I was playing when I started.

I've been writing several articles and been playing Pauper MTG and competitive Pauper. But the "crafting" system in MTGO is not great and it abides to the secondary market, with the format not being a true Pauper format in the sense of "money".

And I've made a decision... I grabbed my old HS account which comes back from the days of the closed beta and I dusted all my Rares, Epics and Legendaries. Yes. I did that.
And with all that Dust I've started brewing true Pauper HS decks.

Right now I count for about 23'ish something decks so far and the potential is immense.
But... since there is no "official" format neither a way to play true Pauper, well, I've been playing with the big boys in Wild and... guess what?! I've been pulling some impressive wins.

Blizzard offered us the Classic format but... well... it's boring. And it's not accessible to all. I have most cards for that format but its limitations bore me out. I prefer playing with an all-Common deck myself.
So, what can we do?

Like many others on this sub and in the discord, I want to try and make this a viable format with a genuine playerbase. There a few challenges to overcome though. First of all, this is a format that isn't supported by the developers, which means that until it gains traction it could be a long time (if ever) before it would get an official tournament. Another point to note is that because it is a player run format it would need a sort of rules committee, much like how edh is run for mtg. This is to keep an eye on potential bans, either to reshape the meta or to counter overly strong strategies. The most important thing that we need though is more action, both on the sub and discord.

What I mean by action is things like announcements, tournaments (like the one that took place last month) more brewing, and just simply more conversation. The pauper subreddit had seen very little happen within it in months, growing closer to years. I think all of it could use an update. Possibly a new round of mods for both the sub and discord so that actions can actually be taken and announcements can be made.

I know it may seem like wasted effort. But I'm not the only one that sees growing activity around the format. Surely there are others that want to enjoy a new way to play hearthstone without having to wait a week to play a new tavern brawl. People on the main hs sub have been wanting a new format for years; let's make that new format.

Like the mode idea a lot, but I wondered if at some point the focus would shift more to being just Basic/Classic sets in general due to there being a great disparity in terms of what deck archetypes tend to use commons.

So, it was pointed out by u/TheTDodge on the thread here: https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/4o13pe/revival_of_a_dying_format/?ref=search_posts that, "Many of the good aggro cards are common, and many of the good late game/control cards are epic or legendary. Just an observation."

I think it would probably a more "healthy" mode with more variety if we just let people use the basic and classic cards without a rarity restriction (provided that those cards are in the basic or classic set I mean) -- otherwise you might get disproportionate types of decks being played way more than others is my thought at least and I think TheTDodge there makes a pretty valid point.

Anyway, thanks for your time, I do love the idea and personally I sorta just wish that Hearthstone in general simply had a Basic/Classic mode though I'm doubtful something like that would ever materialize unfortunately.
