Review finally after 3 years, i finished 1984 by George Orwell

a freaking ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read.

bruh, where do i even begin? it's one of the classic books that ive read where it wasn't for school or academics. so technically this is the first ever book that i finished in the 'classics' genre.

i honestly thought that it would be those scifi/dystopian books where a main character gets their 'happy ending' or at least would have done something so impactful and convincing but NOPE, it just kept getting worse. 😭

its definitely kind of a gut-punch because i was definitely rooting for Winston the whole time pero sis, i was wrong. But it goes to also goes to show that sometimes, no triumphant resistance, no last-minute rescue, or no inner spark survives. it's definitely bleak book. and that's why i kind of understood it as most books give you that "happy ending"; this doesnt.

overall, i really enjoyed reading this. naloka lang ako very light sa mini political theories kemerut on the later part of the book. but wow.. i just realized this is also someone's reality 🥲

Review Finished my first Eve Babitz book

“I wonder if... I'Il ever be able to have what I like or if my tastes are too various to be sustained by one of anything.”

The fact that remains about this book is that almost every person who has read it has, at one point or another, played an important role in my life - platonic or not. These people (many of whom, in my life, are now gone) are those in whom I’d become so emotionally invested in and had such intimate conversations with that my walls were truly down in that moment when I found myself with them. When I found a copy for sale, I knew I had to grab it and figure out what the book was like, as it might give me some insight into why I’ve gravitated towards these individuals who had read it before. This justification seems trivial and silly, but I tried to make sense of it in the best way that I possibly could, and I guess that comes in the form of reading a bunch of essays.

I understand the parallels that people seem to make about Babitz and Didion, and after reading six of Joan’s books, I think I can tell how Eve stands out. She’s much more of an active participant in these memoirs, as opposed to the passive presence that Didion often has in her works. I find it so endearing to see how wild and visceral her recollection of certain events is. I particularly enjoyed Bakersfield, Heroine, and Rain.

After having stayed in California for a little bit more than half a month a few years ago, I can say that the California that Babitz had written of is now gone. Or maybe I had gone to the wrong places. Either way, I’m glad that there is some sort of visceral and intimate written understanding of what Babitz’s California was once like.

3.75/5

My first book by John Steinbeck! Any recommendations on what Steinbeck book should I read next? I have East of Eden in my list, but want to explore his other works first

Current Read Hakuda Photo Studio: what???

Hi hello!!!

Sorry, I have no one to vent to. I’m currently at page 275/340 of Hakuda Photo Studio, and Seokgyeong’s sudden romantic interest in Yanghee has completely thrown me off

There were hints that he was kind and wanted to marry a local, yes, but I genuinely never felt that the story was building romantic feelings between them. Yanghee spent much of the book distrusting or snapping at him, and most of Seokgyeong’s emotionally significant moments seemed connected to Jebi instead

I’m not upset simply because I wanted Jebi and Seokgyeong together. I’m bothered because this feels like a complete 180 that the story did not earn or properly develop

This is honestly the first time I’ve ever wanted to pause, or possibly abandon a book this close to the ending hahaha!

Did anyone else feel the same, or did I miss something?

Recommendation Finally finished The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah

Post image

It took me 3 weeks to finish this book and i even skipped reading 9 days out of those 3 weeks.

Not because it’s boring, but because the story is just so heart wrenching that I had to pause for days just to recover from what I read from some of the chapters. 🥲

I truly recommend this book to those who are into historical fiction, woman empowerment, and sisterhood stories.

5/5 ⭐️

Discussion This month’s ♥️ stack

Accidentally stuck with a color palette for this month’s purchases 😅

Oxygen Mask - had this in my cart for yearS, so happy I finally have a copy! Already read it, and omg, what an ambitious and powerful work. A meditation on BLM and the COVID-19 pandemic. So sad that such beautiful art must come from such deep trauma.

Beloved - I’ve read a few Morrisons already and wanna read the rest of her works!

She Who Remains - think this will be my next read for the weekend :)

Taiwan Travelogue - bought during a recent trip to Taiwan. Sobrang na-enjoy ko yung trip, so brought home the most apt souvenir hehe

♥️

Hi! Looking for bookshelf recommendations. Is Ikea bookshelves good? Hehe thank you.

Recommendation Old paperwhite or Kindle basic?

Should I get the kindle Paperwhite 1 for only 2.5k or the Kindle Basic 10th gen? I don't read books much because of my class schedules and I also don't want to purchase physical books due to minimal storage space within my room + it's a bit expensive for me to purchase multiple books.

Recommendation Books like Six of Crows

Hello hello! Currently on a reading slump since…feb this year. I can’t find a book that will hook me. I’ve tried Project Hail Mary, Pride and Prejudice, Lord of the Flies, and Essex Serpent–i managed to start reading these all pero hindi ko matapos. They’re good naman, pero walang grip sa akin. So i think i might need a book similar to Six of Crows, the book that pulled me out from my years of slump. Please, please I need book recommendations with the same vibe/plot/flow!

Discussion Anyone here who has read Canticles for Dark Lovers?

I'm really enjoying Nolledo's writing, but the collection of his short stories are quite a hard read for me to be honest. I'm wondering if there are like discussions or analysis of the short stories in the book so I could have a better grasp of his style and prose. I enjoyed A LILY IN THE SEA so far.
