Not sure if it is the same western screech owl since it didn’t go inside where I could get a better look, but exciting to hear and see one back! It has been almost 6 months. This was a couple days ago, nothing since but at least a sighting! Last time the owl showed up in August. We’re close - wonder if this is the “normal” schedule. And where do they go for 6 months? South for the winter?

Apologies for the low quality images. This guy looked relatively small to me and I saw it flying around between shrubby branches low to the ground. Didn’t make any sounds. In northeast ohio, near a river.

I sometimes see barred owls near this area but this one looks pretty different to me. Perhaps it’s young, but I can’t tell.

Apologies for the crappy unclear photo. Saw this guy in a proposed development (backcountry) of southwestern BC, Canada. A spotted owl would have implications for the proposed development. TY

OC An old photo from 2017 of a grumpy northern saw-whet we caught and tagged during a college research outing.

I imagine his inner dialog was something along the lines of, "Dis is bullsheet, unhand me now!"
