About ten years ago, I was picking up two guitars (a Chibson and an Yngwie/Blackmore mashup of a Strat) from the post office in Barrhaven.
A guy noticed what I was getting, and gave me the “roll your window down” signal in the parking lot.
He asked me to a jam he had at his buddy’s place, and it was so good.
The host played acoustic through a huge cube amp I’ve never seen, and was a true maestro. Had a huge binder chart book, and called tunes perfectly.
Drum-set in the living room, and there were four guitars the night I was there.
I moved back to Toronto a few years ago, but now I’m back where it’s at, and I’m wondering if these gents are still doing what they’re doing.

Hi everyone, I'm running a bit of a survey to understand what the needs of the music community are. I see Ottawa as this incredible incubator of musicians. I see compelling sets every week at open mics and the few shows I come across, but shows are sparsely attended. Bands dissolve in this environment. The talent is here. But for some reason we don't seem to have what Montreal or Toronto have. I have my theories why, but I would like to hear from everyone else:

What is holding Ottawa back from becoming the kind of music scene you want it to be?

What is holding YOU back from achieving your goals with music?

If you are comfortable giving me some personal details as well, like, are you a musician and if so, what level? Are you a venue manager or promoter? etc. Anything for a little extra context with your answer would be very helpful.

Hey everyone! We are hosting an event this Sunday, July 19th, right after the World Cup match, and we’re looking for a live performer to keep the good vibes going.

To be fully transparent and ensure this is a good fit for everyone, here are all the specific details for the gig:

The Details:

• When: Sunday, July 19th. Start time is around 6:00 PM.
• Where: Shanghai One.
• Compensation: ideally $100-$150 but feel free to send me an offer!!! (We know this is on the lower end, but this is our very first time running this event and we are working with a tight budget. We hope to build relationships for future, better-paid events!)
• Set Length: Looking for about 1.5 to 2 hours of music, which you can break into two sets if you prefer.
• Preferred Style: We are pretty open! We just want something upbeat, celebratory, and feel-good to match the post-game atmosphere. Acoustic pop, light rock, or R&B covers etc. would be great.
• Tech / Gear: Because this is at a restaurant space and it's our first time hosting, we do not have a dedicated sound person, PA system, or backline. You should plan to bring your own small amp or portable PA system to plug into.

I’m one of the organizers of a World Cup Final watch party and afterparty happening this Sunday at Shanghai One Fine Dining in Ottawa.

Doors open at 2:00 PM, kickoff is at 3:00 PM, and the DJ/live-entertainment portion begins after the match, around 6:00 PM.

The idea is to turn the final into a full afternoon and evening event rather than ending everything when the whistle blows.

Food will be available from Shanghai One, and we’ll also be running an interactive prediction competition during the match.
