Please don't respond if you don't know how to have a constructive discussion. This is NOT an invitation to throw troll-level criticism. Thankfully, this sub has a very positive feel to it, and I'd like to ask fellow lovers of Otoyo, How Do You Recommend This Manga with That Age Gap?
I'm genuinely curious how people have interpreted and viewed the main couple's age gap. On one hand we see a society largely comfortable with marrying off children. On the other hand, every character does seem to feel a bit "odd" about Karluk and Amir. It's a very interesting way of depicting people facing their discomfort, accepting and moving on because it is what it is, it was arranged, the customs must be followed, be it marriage or family relations.
Their relationship feels very wrong from a modern lens, but the excuse of "those times" seems to excuse away only older men and female children, not the vice versa. Despite the average media's fetishism of lolitas and daenerys', Karluk seems far far away from fetishized (thank god, THANK GOD). Despite this, I'm wholly aware how uncomfortable his age can feel to a reader - especially later scenes between them. How would people have felt if Karluk was 20 and Amir, 28 and the story had begun years after their marriage? If the main couple would have been a more palatable one like Pariya or Talas' relationship and the older female, younger male couple was a side story? Perhaps Amir was a side character bride whose life we see from the main girl's lens, about how Amir had arrived to marry a 12yo Karluk, who's now grown up, etc etc?
Also, do you think Karluk's family/village first felt tricked into accepting Amir and only did so to honor the elder's pact? If they had refused Amir, wouldn't she have nowhere to go and perhaps Karluk's family did not want to leave her for dead? Karluk's own family doesn't have a traditional patriarchal system in the first place, how do you think that fits in with their village, and affects their acceptance of Amir?
All in all, I love this manga but feel like the age gap makes it very hard to recommend since there is no knowing how the other reader would react to the it. So, I'm curious to know what the sub thinks about this, and how people have recommended the manga or talked about the age gap topic which eventually comes up. (I'd said, you'd be fine with vice versa so why not this?) Thank you for taking the time to read and participate in this discussion.
