This city I built was surprisingly practical and it also really looked nice. Maybe it would give you guys some future ideas for your own cities😊

Mac fix update: invisible reeds and grass now render (Apple Silicon + CrossOver)

A while back I posted that Ostriv runs on Apple Silicon Macs with CrossOver and a patched graphics driver (previous post). Here's an update to that fix.

Turns out some plants were invisible: reeds (the ones the thatchery collects) and grass tufts never showed up on screen. The game logs looked totally fine - Apple's Metal translation layer was silently refusing to draw a few of the game's shaders, without any error. The driver now rewrites those shaders on the fly, so reeds, grass and terrain all render properly now.

New install or if you already installed the fix:

  • cd ostriv-macos
  • git pull
  • python3 patch.py

and choose Install / Reinstall. That's it.

As before: no game files are modified, and everything is undoable with the Restore option.

Reports from other Macs are very welcome - especially if something still looks missing in your town.

What to add next?

I’ve been thinking bout what little extras that could be added to the game;
candles, made from wax collected from homes for a bit of extra income.
Iron kitchenware.
Donkeys, maybe. Maybe be able to import books for school advantage?
Introduce disasters like fires from homes, crop blight and vermin infestations.
Maybe other textile options like soft furnishings improved homes.
Maybe organic changes in homes such as weathering, little sheds/cosmetic repairs.
Canned/preserved goods for longevity.
A more detailed family tree setup that shows all the generations. Maybe have that option located in the church? Or maybe a record of gossip and rumours regarding more realistic person interactions.
Family members tend to graves such as planting/decorations.

Just a thought.

Edit: maybe have luxury goods like silverware and jewellery that can only be imported. Pigeons would be an interesting thing.

Edit2: people get drunk and cause problems. Maybe livestock can escape and ruin gardens. Also I remember back in the day I used to play ‘Black&White’, the people would organically beautify their houses, that would be nice to see. Maybe the same with their streets and surroundings.

Ostriv works great on Apple Silicon Macs now (CrossOver + a driver fix) - here's how

Saw a few posts here over the years asking if Ostriv can run on Mac ("Ostriv on MacOS (Apple Silicon)", "How/Is it possible to play Ostriv on Macbook Pros?") - answer used to be "not really, GeForce Now or a Windows VM." I got it running natively fast under CrossOver instead.

The blocker was OpenGL: Ostriv needs 4.3, Apple's own OpenGL stops at 4.1. Fix is a patched graphics driver (Mesa) that reroutes OpenGL through Apple's Metal via D3D12, plus a few CrossOver settings. GPU-accelerated, fullscreen, 30-60 fps on my M5 Max.

Steps:
- git clone https://github.com/maksymenkoml/ostriv-macos

- cd ostriv-macos

- python3 patch.py

Choose Install, follow the prompts. You need CrossOver and Ostriv already installed via Steam first. Fully undoable with the same script's Restore option - no game files are modified.

If any other Mac folks in here want to try it, I'd appreciate reports of what works/doesn't on different hardware.

The HARDEST thing I've ever done in this game

I've been trying to do something Atlantis inspired for a long time and I finally figured it out. I used a combination of fences and arches to maintain lines and angles, all based around the larger gazebo. Not only is it efficient, but it's highly profitable so far! Next step is to convert the inner ring of houses into row homes and to stop forgetting to put in my orchards.

Discussion My City in 1721 to 1739 | 290 Citizens

Here’s my new save, showing my progress from the beginning up to the year 1739.

I currently have 290 citizens in my town, and my main sources of income are selling shoes, charcoal, and sunflower oil.

If you look at the last picture, you’ll see that my economic system is running very smoothly on its own. In case it helps anyone, I’ve been using the exact same treasury setup ever since I built my Town Hall.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback!

Here's an update on my village! Treasury and economy are looking strong (screenshot attached). I made sure to leave proper spacing between the houses for smooth traffic flow. Let me know what you think of my city layout!

Development I don't know if the creator and editor of the game here or not, but I have some suggestions ...

: - Please find new products such as cigarettes, kitchenware, and baby products.

- Please also create many larger maps with more diverse resources. If possible, create a map on the sea so that there are opportunities to catch sharks or whales and benefit from their blubber or meat.

- Please try to create a university and a convent school, and offer a variety of tailoring options so that you, as a player, can choose a shop specializing in making children's clothes, cotton clothes, linen clothes, or clothes for women or men, for both summer and winter.

- Also, include a fire station, bakery, Zoo, police station, a prison, a bank, and several other cities that we can trade with.

Keep trading post stocked

Is there a way to keep my trading post stocked with goods? I keep having to transfer from my tailor and shoemaker to the post and it is tedious. Would like to keep a supply as new surplus items are produced.

I created a trade post for each city to keep a permanent list of goods. I only change the number I want to store there, if low in resources, and I don't want to trade it for now - 0. Plus I located them as close to the map exit as possible.

What are all the conditions that trigger a family to leave?

Just trying to figure out what the mechanic is for the early - whether it's a matter of just 1 condition not being met, or a culmination of multiple conditions.

Specifically - do villagers need *all* of clothes, warm clothes & shoes? Is 2 out of 3 OK? Are there other considerations?

I've read that these things last for about a year. Is that accurate? Will I need 1 item per villager per year to prevent an exodus?

Cheers

Crop Rotation & Yield Calculator [UPDATED]

Post image

I have given my crop rotation calculator a long overdue update to take into account changes to nutrient calculations and farming updates.

Hopefully this is helpful to everyone in keeping their villagers fat and healthy!

You can find the link to the calculator (As a Google Sheet) on the Ostriv wiki (https://ostriv.fandom.com) on the Farm page, or in the comments below:

Food variety

Will a village house with garden produce the same crops each year? If so, if a different family moves in, will they also make the same crops?

Feedback Little Details

So I'm still running a no immigration game (year 80). I noticed Oleh going to visit a grave so I clicked to see who he was visiting. It was the grave of his son, Valentyn, who died before him. This is amazing to me because without the spreadsheet tracker I wouldn't know it was his son because he isn't listed on the "family" view of their home after death. Big props for this kind of detail.

Don't really have any usable space to build on. If I delete any more Village Gardens to build row houses, my people will not have enough variety. Time to move on to the next town. Almost 5,700 people. Over $80,000 in the bank.
