Gallery Fort de Regret Verdun, France - 1940 and 2018
In 2018, I visited Fort de Regret in the Verdun area.
This fort, and others nearby, were built between 1875 and 1877 to deter German aggression and were modernized between 1905 and 1907 with additional concrete and weaponry.
During World War I, in 1915, the weapons and munitions were dismantled, and the garrison was withdrawn.
When Germany attacked the Verdun sector in 1916, the fort was hastily reoccupied and used as an artillery observation post.
Between the World Wars, the fort was not maintained and remained unoccupied.
During World War II, in June 1940, German troops occupied the fort without a fight/after a short fight (sources differ). I assume these photos were taken on the day the fort fell.
After World War II, it was left as it stands today.
I recently found these old photos online and was surprised by how many angles matched my own photos. Today, the fort remains in good condition, with most of the interior accessible, although getting there requires some hiking and climbing.

Gallery The Professional Building, Waco, Texas, 1929 and 2021
Also known as the Waco Medical Arts building, it was heavily damaged in the 1953 tornado that destroyed two adjacent buildings and claimed 114 lives. The building was modernized under Waco's Urban Renewal Program in 1969, changing the windows and facade at the roof and street levels.

Image BEF in Gravelle nr Arras - 1939/40
Preparing to write a novel at the moment. I actually love doing the research phase of writing a novel - I find it deeply engrossing - although I do find myself getting distracted. Trawling through the IWM image archives, I find an interesting picture like this, of men from the BEF parading through Grevelle near Arras during the 'Phoney War', and then I wonder if I can find the exact spot it was taken on Google Maps. Took a while, but that building with the little round window cinched it, as well as the shape of the window on the shop and the little wall.
