First off: I should emphasize that the title of this book has (un)fortunately nothing to do with its actual contents!

After spending the first half of the year deep in books like Apple in China, Chokepoints, and House of Huawei, I really needed a fun palette cleanser.

The book I was looking for needed to be:

• Nonfiction,
• Short,
• Fun and funny,
• Set in a place/community I almost never read or hear about.

Not only did The Sex Lives of Cannibals check every single box, it also gave me a great look into the history and daily life of Kiribati and its people.

I budgeted the entire month of July to get through it. I finished it in a week!

So, yeah, I highly recommend this book if you're looking for something fun for the summer months.

I used to never be able to finish a book, let alone 7 in the span of 3 months. Nonfiction is definitely my jam, especially memoirs which have inspired me to get into writing. Im curious if anyone has read any of these and have any recommendations? Themes of mortality, photography, zen, teaism, meaning of life etc :)

Hi! I'm looking for an optimistic/inspiring/wholesome sort of nonfiction book recommendation for a radiology technology student that I have been working with who is graduating soon. There are three students, but I was quite inspired for the other two and I am sure they will love the books I've chosen. But for the third, I'm a little stumped!

The student is in his early 20's, a Christian who is a bit of a Bible scholar, and the book he recommended to me (earlier this year when I was asking all my coworkers for recs) was Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey.

The books I've chosen for the other two students are The Anthropocene Reviewed by John Green and Ishmael by Daniel Quinn.

Any nonfiction ideas that fit an uplifting vibe are welcome! If it's something I've read that's cool, but if I haven't I'll read it before gifting.

I've been thinking about how most book recommendation sites work. They tend to recommend books because other people who liked *Book A* also liked *Book B*, or because they're in the same genre.

For my own purposes, I’d like that every non-fiction book could be described by the ideas or learning outcomes it contains, with some weighted more heavily than others. For example, instead of saying a book is "Business" or "Leadership", it might be weighted across concepts like decision-making, negotiation, systems thinking, behavioural economics, organisational culture, etc. Or (as in my case), I’ve read about the French Revolution, and a bit about the Russian Revolution and would like to see books which fill the gaps in-between.  But I don’t know if that’s something other people would do too, or if that’s a bit nerdy and clinical for most.

I've started prototyping this idea ([bookseeking.com](http://bookseeking.com)) so you can see what I mean, but at this stage I'm much more interested in a conversation about whether the concept itself resonates than feedback on the site or anything.

I've been super interested in the collapse of the Bronze Age, the sea peoples, and how societies collapsed at that time period ( I just watched the Odyssey) Are there any engaging well written books you recommend? I really like the Lost City of Z and was wondering if there were any books with that same writing style. Thanks!

This was an intriguing read about the ways ocean creatures use sound to experience their environments, find mates, create family structures, and more.

I learned sound can:

- help detect invasive species

- change the survival chances of some animals

- literally kill plankton

- bring baby animals "home"

Even creatures that can't "hear" experience underwater sound as a physical force, and it matters for their senses and survival! Some fish biology changes to take advantage of sound feedback!

That's not to mention the epic sounds of cetaceans 💕🐋 which get great coverage.

The book covers many topics in thematically organized chapters, and sometimes bounces around a little (within the theme). I'm OK with that. Some readers may not like it as much. Kingsdon's style can lean literary and dives into her inspiration for this book. I am also OK with that and I think she has a way with words.

Kingsdon also mentions some incidents that informed readers may already know, e.g. the 52-hertz whale. Most of the book was new to me or included new details about the science. There are a couple descriptions of unethical past experiments on creatures; they didn't trigger me but watch out if you're squeamish.

I do want to shake some Goodreads reviewers. Sometimes... an author brings back information about a certain thing later in the book... because it helps readers understand how the new topic applies to that old information. Maybe... it was on purpose?

Anyway, 5/5 from me!!!

hi recently i have started reading "how to read a book" and wanted to ask about an opinions stated in the book.

in the chapter called "Practical vs. Theoritical Books" theres a paragraph that goes:

We have noted that although economics is primarily and usually a practical matter, there are nevertheless books on economics that are purely theoretical. Similarly, although understanding is primarly and usually a theoretical matter, there are books (most of them are terrible) that purport to teach you "how to think."

And the authors have not explained why would those books be terrible whatsoever so i wanted to ask for your thoughts and opinions on the topic

I almost finished my book but I don’t know how to promote it. For now, I only found Goodreads and Knosit to post it on and get reviews.

By the way, when I was growing up in Buffalo, New York, do you know any Elk Lodges there were? I never thought that they were anything except for benign meeting places for veterans or old people or people with funny hats.

But of course, the opposite is true and the evidence is right there . This book is not about elk Lodges per se but it is about the continuing of minstrelsy after the Civil War. What it represented and how it morphed into something that we all took part in as we were kids. Or more specifically what we were made to take part in.

How many Stephen Foster songs did we sing when we were kids? How many of us drove around dark dilapidated and windowless rows of houses in cities and downtowns?

I’m not a quarter of the way through, but my sons bought me this as a birthday present and I have to say I’m really enjoying it, but with extremely mixed feelings about how we all grew up in the city, the signs and the symptoms of continued minstrelsy all over the United States, and for me at least, The argument for honoring people financially for what we took from them.

Unhumans: The Secret History of Communist Revolutions (and How to Crush Them) is a 2024 American political and polemical book by Jack Posobiec and co-author Joshua Lisec which was a New York Times bestseller. It features a foreword by Steve Bannon and a blurb from JD Vance. The book claims that the American left desires a communist dictatorship and thus should be labeled "unhumans" who should lack human rights. Reviewers criticized the book for being "fascist," "anti-democratic", and "hateful".

The Idea of Knowing Something and Massive Intense Amounts of Psychotherapy are two non-fiction accounts of life in it's realest sense. One a true account recorded in poetry of what it's like to be committed of the wrong crime, and the other what it's like to be homeless in a town plagued by murder, cold temperatures and police harassment. The three most common problems in the homeless population today.

I was rewatching Master and Commander today and it really is a great movie. I’ve read a couple of the novels as well. Could you recommend similar non fiction books that del with warfare in the age of sail? I’m especially interested in books that go into the society created on board a ship as well as battles. According to the author Ariel Sabar, "This book is a work of investigative journalism, presented in the form of narrative nonfiction."

The author is an investigative journalist, and he was the one to publish the first article about a possible fraud on the discovery of an escadulous religion text, the so called Gospel of Jesus's Wife.

I was so intrigued by this book. It reads like a thriller most of the time, and I was into it and tried not to spoil myself (I was successful for most of it). It is incredibly long, though. Maybe some of the topics will not interest you, and you'll lose patience with it. The author goes deep in many tangents, such as: the study of old languages, early church studies, the nuances of academia (especially if you're a woman!), gnosticism, and much, much more. Fortunately, I was interested in all of that, so I was in for the whole ride.

I took my time, though, because it was all a lot of information and truly good information, so I wanted to take it all in.

Definitely recommend it !

I just bought this online has anyone else Read this book.

My uncle studied philosophy at university. Reading has always been his number one hobby. He used to have a big office at home with shelves all over the walls filled with philosophy books. He could read several books in a week. Unfortunately, he has Parkinson's disease which got a lot worse after my aunt passed away from cancer two years ago. It got so bad, he's now in a nursing home. He doesn't have any children (I'm his niece) and is depressed. I asked him about books he would like to read and he said philosophy and religion. I didn't understand why he wanted to read about religion as he's not a believer.

Anyhow, I'd be very grateful if anyone could provide any recommendations. Bear in mind he's 80 y/o although his mind doesn't seem to be the problem.
