Hi! I am getting married August 15 in Newberg (where I grew up) and we are not having young children there, but about 10 of my friends are flying their kids with them and will need a babysitter from about 4 - 11 pm on that day. Anyone have any good recommendations I can pass along? They would preferably come to the hotel/airbnbs to watch the kids but could also be dropped off. Everyone is staying in either Newberg or Dundee.

They can use Care.com of course, but figured it would be nice if someone from the community had any ideas! I live in the DC area and don't have kids and none of my hometown friends with kids seem to have go-to people so looking for some help!

I previously have gone to Lakeridge high school, but I recently moved to Newberg. I’m aware of the strong political presence that has affected Newberg high in the past and all the controversies. As someone who is used to an all accepting school, the idea that Pride and BLM symbols were banned is really disturbing. I also know there has been severe budget cuts that has affected Newberg as well as other schools. If anyone has children there or have gone/currently go there what’s your experience?

Where would I look for help with cooking & cleaning, with creative arrangements? Looking on behalf of a Mother/Community Doctor, raising several kids by herself and trying to run her own community-oriented care here in Newberg.

For example, one possibility is to hire someone for cooking who would like a break on grocery bills for their family. So the trade might be Dr. pays for all groceries, and the hired individual cooks enough for both families. There may be more room for additional negotiation.

Ideally, 1 person for all the needed roles, but open to multiple specialists.

EDIT Perhaps high school or college student would be good for this. If adult, possible housing arrangement could be made.

As a local plumbing and drain company, we wanted to share something that might save a few people from an expensive call.

These are the most common issues we get called for (by far):

1. Clogged drains that were “slow for weeks.”
People ignore them until they fully back up. Early fix = cheap. Late fix = not.

2. Water heaters failing without warning.
Most last 8–12 years. After that, it’s a gamble. Take care of the one you have. Consider draining your water heater annually.

3. Garbage disposals are getting jammed.
Biggest culprits: grease, eggshells, and fibrous foods. Use a strainer and make sure to clear your garbage disposal often. Avoid putting grease, oil, and fats in your sink. Pasta and rice too, as they expand. Run your disposal with cold water and run for 10-15 seconds after grinding everything out.

4. Small leaks turning into big damage.
Especially under sinks and behind toilets—people don’t notice until it’s bad.

5. DIY fixes that made things worse.
This one is more common than you’d think.

If you catch most of these early, you can avoid a service call entirely.

Hey everyone. I’m an Oregon native that’s looking to relocate my family back to the valley after 11 years in central Oregon. How’s life in Newberg for adults mid-late 30’s with kids elementary and younger? I have some family trying to steer us faaaar away from possibly landing in Newberg claiming it’s very back woods and incredibly narrow minded and conservative but they’ve never actually lived in there so trying to get an idea from people who have more current insight. The owner, Carlos, is a terrible contractor and has no idea what he’s doing. For 2 years he was venting moisture from my bathroom into my walls. I now need to hire a professional to repair his shoddy work!
