Hello, my wife and I are newish to vermont (two years here) and haven't made many social connections. We are in Southern Vermont, in-between Bennington and Bratt so there isnt much going on here outside winter. We were wondering if anyone else in the area was interested in starting up a board game group or something, or if one was already established here and we could join in :). We have a personal collection of about a hundred games.

Is there a website or a periodical (guess my age) I can check for listings? Brattleboro may be a little too far for me to drive at night because I don't know the area well.

Hi all! I am from Tennessee originally but lived in Boston for grad school. I came back home to help a parent with terminal illness and now it has been two years since his passing. I am looking to move to a new location and the new england area comes up often in my mind as I love the nature and colder weather. I have been able to find some decent jobs in the area that I am qualified for, but havent started applying yet.

I am curious what locals have to say about living there? I won't know anyone in the area, and I know there is a lot about a place that I'll never know without talking to the people who live there. So please tell me the good and the bad about living there. What are important things someone should consider before committing to a move?

I’m planning a trip to Vermont w my boyfriend and dog near the end of September. We’re driving up from Jersey and plan to stay one night in Burlington, three nights outside of Stowe, and one night in Woodstock. I’m looking for suggestions for things to do.

I’d like to drive up route 7 and drive back route 100. Right now we’re interested in checking out Dog Mountain, checking out wineries and cideries, and hiking.

Gluten free specific activities: visit King Arthur Bakery, and maybe stopping at any of these:

**I wanted to see if there were any photo booths in a store or bar along Route 7, specifically in the Manchester/Bennington areas and all the way to Albany, NY.**

With higher COL, would i just be eating ramen if i take this job? The job benefits are definitely better than where i am currently but.....

I will preface this post to say that the idea of living in Vermont is intoxicating. I've been here near 20 years starting off as a ski tourist commuting each week with my family. As the kids have grown older and moved on, we settled in Vermont full-time.

Yes, we live in the bubble. A ski focused area with many transplants and regular tourists. We work remote, volunteer through organized clubs, and generally lead an outside active lifestyle. We pay the highest tax bracket for real estate and income, and do not have children in the school system. I could say I'm a pseudo Vermonter as my parents were born here and my grandparents were born here, but I grew up out of state.

As you consider your move to Vermont, there are many things in this subreddit that folks should be acutely aware of how things have deteriorated. Healthcare is almost nonexistent unless you want to travel and pay extra. When we arrived, there were doctors and physicians and a pharmacy. There was a vibrant healthcare market locally. UVM has taken that away and those businesses moved on. If you need a GP, be ready to wait inline as most are not taking new clients. Everything is 45-60 minutes away. Thank goodness for Amazon and online shopping.

Housing prices and taxes have gone up, which is similar to other parts of the country. But what is very clear is that Vermont has no natural resources and industries that contribute to the tax base like other states; except for tourism, second homeowners, and a handful of higher income people, be those small business owners or people like myself who work for out-of-state companies. Local jobs are mainly in the service business and don't pay near a living wage.

Most areas of Vermont are poor and towns are in decay. Yes there are some bright spots but in general towns that thrived 100 years ago are time capsules. Drive up 100 or 7 and you'll see prime examples.

I've seen countless businesses and restaurants try to start, but Vt is not a business friendly state plus seasonal swings in population mean it's full on crazy or dead quiet. It's not an easy place for restaurants.

As you look at Vt through the filter of instagram or Facebook. Keep in mind the struggle is real here. Isolation is real. If you don't have a network to support you and the funds to make it on your own, your chances of being here long term go down considerably.

I was not surprised in my friend network here how many people are considering leaving. The taxes this year have spooked many but that is not the driver.

If you think, it's great that there are people considering leaving the state and pushing housing prices lower. Think again, these are the bubble communities. LLCs and wealthy new Englanders are all looking for second homes still. They won't domicile in VT, so the next batch won't pay state income tax but they will certainly keep the real estate prices up in specific communities.

For us, we've reached our final chapter. The numbers stopped making sense two years back and we wanted to keep the Vt dream alive. Retiring in Vt is a pipe dream. The Reality is this place is hard and I don't see it getting better but it most certainly will become more expensive.
