1. How do I get better control of my companions?

The default companion control systems can work effectively if you know how to use them. Make sure you're using the Voice Commands, in addition to putting companion commands in your quickbar. The Voice Commands menu can be accessed by pressing V. Once you get used to using it, you can issue voice commands very quickly.

[EE ONLY:] You should also consider turning on the 'player-party-control' setting, which allows you to manually direct your companions. You can CTRL-click on a companion (or multiple companions) and then left-click in the world (or on an enemy) to order them. You can CTRL-click-and-drag to easily select multiple companions using a bounding box selection. There are two short video tutorials showing how to use this system, here and here (thanks to CalgacusMapBrude!)

2. The AI sucks! Is there any way to make it more challenging?

The most commonly recommended community mod for AI is TonyK's, which you can find here - it upgrades enemy AI and companion AI and has lots of options: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/hakpak/original-hakpak/henchman-inventory-battle-ai-mod (check the latest comments for install instructions on NWN:EE)

There are many other AI mods out there.

3. What are the commonly recommended mods / graphics upgrades for this game?

The NWN community has been modding for 20 years, so there are a vast number of mods. We cannot provide a comprehensive list. The base game experience is generally considered to be quite solid.

However, there are a number of graphics upgrades you should consider trying [Note: many of the following will only work with EE]:

4. I have my old Neverwinter Nights 1 disks still, should I install from them or get Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition?

There are still people using original Neverwinter Nights 1, and some servers still running. However, the original game has not been supported for many years and by default you cannot see the server list. By contrast, Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced Edition is actively supported by its developer Beamdog, and has received a huge number of updates, bugfixes, and upgrades and optimisations to the engine (including lighting and other visual upgrades). Enhanced Edition has NWNSync, which auto-downloads custom content from servers, meaning you no longer have to manually download custom hak content. Finally, the Enhanced Edition also has a server list that is still maintained, so you can easily access it in game, and it has Steam Workshop support.

This page (link) also contains more info about the differences between the EE and the original game.

5. The campaign is super boring! What's all the fuss about this game for?

The original campaign (the 'OC') released with Neverwinter Nights, 'The Wailing Death', is somewhat notorious for having a long and quite slow-paced first act. Some people love it, some people don't. If you're struggling to make progress in the original campaign, the community generally recommends you check out the two very well-received expansions instead: the first expansion Shadows of Undrentide ('SoU') starts you at level 1, and the second expansion Hoards of the Underdark is designed for you to continue with the same character. Both expansions are included with NWN:EE.

Also often recommended are the Premium Modules which you can purchase (from Steam - or check the menus that appear when you select 'New Game' from the main menu). Each Premium Module forms an entirely new and separate campaign. Several Premium Modules are already included with NWN:EE. For console players, all Premium Modules are included with the game.

However, many NWN fans would argue that the real reason you should play NWN, is the plethora of community-made content for which the game is deservedly famous.

Community content for NWN includes both downloadable community-made singleplayer/co-op modules, and the many expansive (and game-modifying) Persistent World servers (see further below for more info on both).

Neverwinter Nights is still (20 years on from its release) a truly unique platform for players to make and host their own online MMO-style gameworlds, with Dungeon Masters who can manipulate the world around players on-the-fly - in a way no other game has ever achieved. NWN is also quite possibly the most customisable RPGs ever released for players to make their own single-player and co-op adventures with. There's a world of community-made adventures out there - have fun!

6. What are these 'persistent world' servers I keep hearing about?

Many NWN players have been playing the game for literally decades, but have never completed any of the singleplayer campaigns or community modules! How and why is that? It's because the main attraction of NWN for many of us is that it allows us to play on Persistent Worlds ('PWs'). PWs are a truly unique feature of NWN and one of the main reasons there continues to be a thriving NWN community today despite the game's age.

A typical PW server is a player-run server which hosts its own custom-built, player-created module (game world) which is in some respects very much like a mini-MMO. Each PW has a hand-crafted gameworld created by the server's owners and community, with (most often) plentiful static content (dungeons, quests, and monsters), huge expanses of terrain and cities to explore, and often their own specially-created fantasy world concept with a full canon background and lore of its own - though many PWs are set in Faerun, the classic D&D setting.

However there are some crucial differences between a regular MMO, and a NWN persistent world server:

6.(a) dungeon masters on persistent worlds:

  • on PWs there will usually be a staff of Dungeon Masters; players who have been granted access to the server via the DM client, and whose role is to act just like that of a tabletop D&D DM; to manipulate and shape the world around players to lead them off on quests, adventures and stories of all kinds (see further below for some more detail on how the DM system in NWN works).
  • On almost every server, players can't know if a DM is logged on unless or until a DM starts to manipulate the world around them. This lends a huge feeling of life and spontaneity to the gameworld, which is impossible to replicate without a system like NWNs where you have an actual human being making up adventures for you in real-time.
  • Some DMs like to focus on creating smaller-scale, character-development focused plots. Some make huge, world-sweeping overarching storylines. Different styles of DM can be found on different PWs, and different PWs have different approaches to the kinds of player character stories that are told in their own particular worlds.

6.(b) player-driven storytelling on persistent worlds:

  • most PWs (but not all!) are roleplaying servers. This is how NWN really replicates the magic tabletop D&D experience, but on a uniquely large and long-term scale. You interact with other player characters as if you were your character. Most PWs use text chat for characters to communicate with each other, which allows you the freedom to play any kind of character you want.
  • Your character builds friendships and alliances with other characters; takes up causes to fight for; maybe even builds a faction, leads a rebellion, or works to undermine other player characters' efforts to do those things. Your character might join an underworld gang of thieves, or a saintly paladin; they might rise to be famous, even to be the most powerful creature - player or NPC - on the server. Different servers have different rules about roleplaying and what player characters can do, and how strict you need to be about staying in-character when you're playing!

6.(c) 'persistence' in persistent worlds - how the world reacts to your character:

  • Like MMO servers, PWs operate 24/7. You can log on anytime and go adventuring with your friends or people you meet in the gameworld (though you might well find that a DM intercepts your regular dungeon crawl and leads you off on a totally unexpected adventure!)
  • But more than that, 'persistence' in this game usually means that players can affect the gameworld and it will stay changed. If your character does something which affects the world around them, the effect of your character's actions persists. In this way, NWN PWs try to reflect the sense of agency and freedom that tabletop D&D is so famous for, and try to make a world that feels immersive and 'real'.
  • PWs with an active team of builders and DMs may also literally change the gameworld around you in response to your character's actions. Towns and cities could be destroyed. 'Static' dungeons may be cleansed forever of their evil inhabitants. Empires can rise and fall. The tools we builders and DMs have with NWN really do make almost anything possible.

6.(d) persistent worlds - one instance to rule them all:

  • Notably, PWs don't use any instancing (at least, none do as far as this author is aware of); all player characters exist together in a single set of areas that make up a contiguous undivided world. Immersion, and the driving narrative energy of dynamic interaction and conflict between player characters, means that there can't be arbitrary divides separating players who live in different parts of the world.

[Note for console players: only two PWs, Arelith and Ravenloft and currently available to console players, for a variety of complicated reasons to do with restrictions on console content. If you want to play on other PWs, you would have to get the mobile or PC version of the game. Sorry!]

7. I've heard that NWN allows players to act as Dungeon Masters (DMs) like in tabletop D&D? How does that work?

NWN's DM client is included with the game, and is a fantastic storytelling tool, allowing you - just like a tabletop D&D DM - to weave your own stories for players on-the-fly and take them on wild, unpredictable adventures.

If you look in the folders that contain the NWN game files, you'll find that packaged with your copy of the game there are some additional bits of software. One of those is the Toolset (see further below). Another is the dedicated server application (also see further below!) But the other important piece of software that comes with NWN is the DM client.

The DM client looks and acts like the regular game when you load it up, but is only really for use in multiplayer. Here's how it works:

  • NWN multiplayer servers can set a DM password to prevent anyone except authorised users logging in to the server using the DM client.
  • When you log into a server using the DM client and you're loaded into the gameworld, you are invisible. On most servers, players will not get a login notification for you and will know you're there unless you give them some kind of sign you are (or message them, of course).
  • As DM, you can manipulate the gameworld in real-time using a variety of tools and menus available only when running the DM client.
  • What does 'manipulate the gameworld in real-time' actually mean? It means that as DM, you can spawn any number, and all manner, of creatures, NPCs, monsters, placeable buildings and other scenery, items, encounters, traps and triggers, sound and visual effects, and so on. You can manipulate (move, destroy, etc.) any of those things which you spawn. You can possess any NPC, make them do anything you want, and 'speak' to players as that NPC.
  • You can also manipulate players' characters; teleporting them around or (to a limited extent) taking control of them, granting them levels and xp and gold (or taking such things away from them), accessing their inventory. Use custom-made DM items to perform all manner of other actions on a player character - perhaps transform them into another creature temporarily, or make them 100 feet tall (or as small as an ant).

In summary, the whole idea of the DM client is to give DMs the tools to manipulate the world with as much freedom as they would be able to do if you were sitting around a table with them and playing a session of any pen 'n paper roleplaying game like D&D - only in the case of NWN, you can actually see and interact with (a virtual) representation of the world in real-time, instead of just imagining a world in your minds.

8. Do servers have content and assets (game modifications) that go beyond just the old base game stuff I've already seen in the singleplayer campaigns?

Yes! There are a huge number of custom content mods out there for NWN - 20 years' worth. But if you want to see just how massive the changes players can make to this game can be, you have to go and explore some of the many persistent world servers NWN has to offer.

Many servers use large amounts of modifications - particularly custom content created by the community that expands the range and variety of sceneries, buildings, vehicles, monsters and NPCs, items and mounts that are in the game. Some servers are even set in modern or sci-fi settings. Servers can also run visual mods which hugely upgrade the look of the game.

Perhaps most importantly of all, many servers use custom rulesets and modifications to the base game mechanics of NWN to suit their preference for balance or to make changes to bring the combat and other mechanics more - or less - in line with the 3rd edition D&D rules the base game uses.

9. How do I find and access NWN multiplayer servers? Do I have to manually download the mods that a server uses, before I can log in?

In NWN:EE (on PC and mobile), you can access any public NWN server including all the PWs, just by using the main menu 'Multiplayer' and 'Join Game' options, then choosing a server from the list and logging on. [Note that console players have access to only the Arelith and Ravenloft servers]

As far as downloading mods goes, with the Enhanced Edition you usually don't have to worry about manually downloading any mods if you want to play on a server. If the server's owner has things set up properly, when you first try to log on to the server you'll find that the custom content all downloads automatically.

10. How do I find cool community-made singleplayer or co-op modules to play?

Check out the module rankings on https://neverwintervault.org/, they are a good place to start. Search on this subreddit and on the Neverwinter Vault discord for past posts asking for recommendations [could include some links to past reddit threads here].

You can also ask here on this subreddit, but try to explain what you feel you're looking for in a campaign experience.[could include a list of very well known/classic community modules here?]

11. The game is too easy! How do I increase the difficulty?

Make sure you try out the game's different difficulty settings. You can also try out classic mods such as the HCR (hardcore ruleset) which was an implementation of pen&paper D&D 3.0 and 3.5 rules: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/script/hcr-34-final

Also see above for AI upgrades you can try which may make the game more challenging.

Bear in mind that a lot of the 'challenge' of the game depends on the design of the levels and enemies you're fighting. Different modules may have entirely different enemies including community-made ones with abilities not found in base game content. If you're not finding enough challenge in the module you're currently playing, try looking for a more challenging module - or check out some of the many persistent world servers available, many of which have extremely high quality static content (dungeons and quests), and several of which operate on hardcore and permadeath rulesets.

12. I have a question about how a particular class/combat rule/spell/ability/game mechanic works /OR/ I need help with making a character!

NWN uses an adaptation of the D&D 3rd Edition ruleset. A full guide to that ruleset, NWN's application of it, and how to build a character, are way beyond the scope of this FAQ - but don't despair! You are not alone if you think that the ruleset is complicated. It definitely is, but it can be satisfying and fun to learn the rules as you go along.

The single most helpful thing we can do to help in this post is to link you to the NWNWiki: https://nwn.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page

The NWNWiki is a comprehensive reference guide which is likely to be able to quickly answer any question you might have about how a particular rule, mechanic, class, spell or ability works.

If you are still having trouble finding an answer to your question after you've checked the wiki, feel free to make a post in this subreddit!

13. How do I find mods and custom content?

https://neverwintervault.org/ is the main repository for NWN custom content. Be aware that it contains both NWN and NWN2 content.

Many mods can be installed [on PC] simply by extracting the individual files into your /Documents/Neverwinter Nights/override folder. Check each mod's install instructions for how to install.

Be aware that if you're playing online, lots of servers have their own custom content which may override any mods you have installed (or sometimes, conflict with them to produce weird results such as visual anomalies).

NWN:EE has Steam Workshop support, though be aware that there can be problems installing some types of mods (particularly mods which make major changes to base game mechanics, such as the Community Expansion Pack) via Steam Workshop. Also, Workshop content does not load into the game unless you have Steam running when you run the game. Workshop is often best used for installing visual modifications, though again be aware that depending on what you are playing, some mods installed with Steam Workshop might not function correctly (for example, some servers have mods that may conflict with your Workshop mods).

14. How do I organise these five billion mods I want to use?

A helpful community member recommends this very well-reviewed mod installer application: https://neverwintervault.org/project/nwn1/other/tool/neverwinter-nights-mod-installer-tool-nit

15. I'm interested in creating NWN mods and game assets / creating my own module / scripting with NWScript, where can I get help with this?

  • NWToolset.exe is the Toolset application included with all copies of the game. It is used for building and editing modules, scripting with NWScript, and is an extremely powerful game creation tool. You can read more about it on nwn.wiki. There are also a lot of video tutorials on YouTube that may help you learn how to use the Toolset.
  • Neverwinter Vault has a huge number of old tutorials that can get you started: https://neverwintervault.org/
  • Neverwinter Vault also has an active Discord server with lots of discussion and places to ask questions about building modules, creating custom content, scripting, or running a server: https://neverwintervault.org/chat
  • The Neverwinter Modding Wiki is a relatively new site which already has a huge amount of guides, tutorials and basic info about the workings of the game, the Toolset, and how to make custom content for NWN: nwn.wiki
  • The Neverwinter Lexicon is a total repository of NWN's custom scripting functions: https://lexicon.nwn.wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page (n.b. link updated as of 27/06/2022 due to problems with the old Lexicon hosting/DNS)
  • The NWNWiki is a very comprehensive fan wiki about the game which is a great reference guide to the basic game mechanics (classes, magic, combat etc.): https://nwn.fandom.com/wiki/Main_Page
  • For creating and editing game assets - modelling, texturing, animations and VFX:

16. I want to set up a server / host a multiplayer game of NWN

  • If you want to just host a game for a session, instead of making an always-online dedicated server, you can do that simply by using the in-game 'Multiplayer' menu - no need to bother with using the dedicated server application discussed below. You are likely to need to forward some ports to let others log on to your server - the default ports that need forwarding are 5120-5300 for both TCP and UDP.
  • If no-one can see your server despite you already having set up port forwarding on your router, you may need to change the 'Post Game to Internet' setting in the Options menu under Multiplayer - Server settings: https://nwn.wiki/display/NWN1/Game+Options#GameOptions-Multiplayer
  • NWServer.exe is the game's dedicated server software which is included with all copies of the game. The are both Windows and Linux versions. On Windows you can find it in the game's install directory (not the User/Documents neverwinter nights directory), in the /bin folder. You can read more about it on nwn.wiki.
  • If you want to set up and run a dedicated NWN:EE server that can be kept online 24/7 (e.g. to host a persistent world), here is a short step-by-step guide which requires no prior knowledge of Linux: https://github.com/Daztek/NWNX-WSL(the guide also includes the commands needed to install NWNX - Neverwinter Nights Extended - on your server):

17. I want to be able to see the chat logs from all my past adventures with friends on PWs, but the game overwrites the log file every time!

NWN automatically outputs the contents of both the action log and the chat log (separate text windows at the bottom of the NWN UI, if you're playing online) to nwclientLog1.txt, which can be found in your /Documents/Neverwinter Nights/logs folder.

However, the game overwrites nwnclientlog1.txt every time you load up the game.

The NWNLogRotator is a great tool which, with very little set-up, can automatically save your logs and clean them up so they're easily readable HTML: https://github.com/noblesigma/NWNLogRotator (there's a short video tutorial to help you set it up)

18. I don't have a super-fancy PC with a one-ton graphics card! Will the game run on my PC/laptop/tablet/mobile phone/toaster?

The game was launched in 2002, so despite NWN:EE having upgrades to the lighting engine, any version of the game runs fine on old hardware and hardware without a dedicated graphics card - for example, it can be run on a ThinkPad X270 (this author's personal experience) or a Microsoft Surface.

If the game is running slow or you're getting frame rate issues, turning off shadows in the settings can help significantly with performance, and turning off the new water shader in settings may help as well.

For mobile phones and tablets you are best checking out the info included on the app store for your device.

Golarion Chronicles Launch -- Pathfinder 1e

Thumbnail gallery
72 Upvotes

We are happy to announce the launch of Golarion Chronicles! A Neverwinter Nights persistent world roleplaying server set in the Pathfinder campaign setting. This server includes a complete overhaul to the pathfinder 1st edition ruleset.

We will be launching August 1st!

Come one and all, Welcome!

Access to the discord can be found on our website https://www.golarionchronicles.com/

Golarion Chronicles is a persistent world roleplay server for Neverwinter Nights: Enhanced edition set in the Pathfinder Campaign Setting utilizing the 1st edition ruleset. Mechanics, Lore and Homebrew: The goal of Golarion Chronicles is to represent the Pathfinder world of Golarion both narratively and mechanically as close to pnp as possible. Unless explicitly stated otherwise players can assume that the mechanics and setting lore are identical to that of the reference material for Pathfinder. Our goal is to have as little homebrew or modifications as possible, but some changes will need to be made in order to be properly represented in neverwinter nights. These changes will be represented on the wiki.

Setting and Dates:
Golarion Chronicles is set during the Age of Lost Omens, utilizing all of the areas and events that happen during it. Any lore that takes place after 1st edition ended and 2nd edition began is not referenced in our setting. The specific date has been left purposefully ambiguous. Conflicting events that happen based of two different years in the same age can be referenced at the same time if it is fitting for the narrative. Many of the majorly impactful events happened after 2nd edition began.

Character begin in the city of Absalom, and all characters are members of the Pathfinder Society. Players can revoke or lose their membership to the society through roleplay, but all begin as thus.

The Pathfinder Society is a globe-spanning organization based out of Absalom, the City at the Center of the World. The membership consists primarily of Pathfinders, adventurers who travel throughout Golarion—usually inconspicuously—and explore, delve, and otherwise experience the lesser-seen parts of the world. They send journals documenting their travels back to their venture-captains, who also assigns them new missions and suggests new places to explore. The most exciting and illuminating of these journals are compiled in the Pathfinder Chronicles, an ongoing series of books that collect the history and mystery of Golarion for its membership and the general public.

NWN1 OC: can’t trade with Shady Character

11 Upvotes

Hello! I have a very specific issue and I cannot find a solution anywhere. I want to trade with rogue merchant, in order to get Greater Mask of Persuasion, but it seems I can’t start the dialogue with him. It worked just fine in Port Llast, but it stopped working in Luskan and chapter 3 is where I’m now. I used to have this one, but switched it for Golden Circlet, now I would love that extra Charisma for my Paladin/Fighter/CoT, and persuasion especially, since I can’t level it up anymore.

Help? Is there specific condition in order to talk to this merchant?

HotU Does any decision carry over between SoU chapters and HotU?

5 Upvotes

Was wondering about this, it's been a long while since i played the games and i can't remember if there was anything that carried over aside from the character's level and equipment. Like, will anything i do matter between SoU chapter 1 and interlude, or even will some decision carry over to HotU?

NWN1 Some questions for a new player

3 Upvotes

I have the EE version and want to get into this not really played it much.

is it possible to load a custom Henchman into the OC ?

I would love a Dwavern Defender henchman holding the line while I play as an arcane archer. I don’t really like many of the others

Also I think this is a no but I only have 1 laptop is there anyway to play local coop with 2 players on it?

I guess I could get my steam deck but do I need a 2nd copy of the game?

Also I’ve the OC isn’t great - I have all the official packs which is the best to play as a brand new player thanks

finally any must have mods? I don’t mean modules but graphic improvements etc, QOL

NWN2 Couple Nwn2 questions.

5 Upvotes
  1. Why does it seem Bards are the most beloved? Besides using them for RDD I don't see it.

  2. On console how is a 25 year old game have the longest load times.

  3. Is the sleep mechanic I keep reading about in motb that bad? If so how do casters make it?

Obviously I am not very well versed in 3.5 and this game. I just heard there is no respec and don't want to be deadmeat in the expansion. I also don't want to RDD melee it. Did that in NWN 1.

How I like to clear zones as a cleric

Level 8 Air and Magic domain Cleric clearing the pre-blacklace zone in the OC.

I love being so tanky that I can run aggroing all the enemy and then blasting them all away with 3 spells.

NWN1 Amulet of Natural Armor +5.

10 Upvotes

So... can it be made by any other character than a mage/bard/sorc?
Currently replaying the game as a cleric, found the recepie in the ruins, have ingredients, can't cast Mage Armor (Shield of Faith doesn't count, me thinks).
So I took a sorc henchman to check if an NPC can cast it. And I was cock-blocked from using the lab by not being one of the earlier mentioned caster classes.
So is AoNA +3 the highest I can get?

SoU Looking for a solid Monk build for SoU

13 Upvotes

Hey all, newish player here. Early level monk has been kicking my butt. I’m finally near the end of the interlude and starting to see the build come together. Using Deekin’s bard song and haste spell has been an awesome experience! I’m kind of winging it and haven’t found a good solid monk build. Right now I’m just pure monk but open to options. Can I go cleric to get buffs? Or is it not worth it? I’m just stacking strength and Dex to utilize furry of blows and improved knock down. I messed up during leveling and still don’t have great cleave. Thanks in advance!

NWN2 I finally finished the story.

After some time, I reinstalled NWN2 and decided to complete both campaigns with a new character, since my first one had a poorly optimized build because I was still inexperienced with D&D 3.5.

To be honest, I enjoyed NWN2's story much more than NWN1's. I also think it's a more enjoyable game because it offers a much more complete experience when it comes to races, classes, and character builds.

NWN1 My Grievance Assortment!

20 Upvotes

I love this game.

However,

I have a list of grievances I want to share with the world AKA a list of things I would Change (even if sometimes I don't know how exactly I'd change them). Some are because of the engine. Others are issues with the official campaigns. All are things I wish were different.

Skills

Discipline is an atrocious skill point sink for martial classes who are skill point straved. Just make it an AB opposed roll or something. Anything but this crap.

I kinda like the idea of Parry even though it doesn't exist in d&d. Opens up the possibility of a duelist character or defensive melee character. Implementation sucks unfortunately and I wouldn't bother trying to fix it. It's also buggy. I also think that it doesn't work during the riposte animation so it's not as good against groups of enemies. I've only found a use for it in the horrible bloated dire spider encounters of the OC. More on that later. It's probably best to do away with both.

Appraise I'm ambivalent about. If it has to exist, I'd probably just remove the die roll and make it the same for every merchant. Like even if you don't savescum, it's still optimal for you to compare every merchant and I'm against game design choices that make the optimal way to play a slog. Not only would you have to manually compare merchant prices because the game chooses to be opaque about the appraise rolls for some reason, if the merchant is not at a convenient location you'd have to walk there every time. I can see some people disagreeing with making it the same for all merchants. My reasoning is the following: yes it doesn't make sense that every merchant has the same prices but it also doesn't make sense that Aribeth gives you 2000gp for saving the entire city which is about the cost of one (1) suit of full plate armour. She also keeps ripping you off. Thank you Aribeth. None of it makes sense, so might as well make it convenient.

Pickpocket... should do something. At all. Also, hot take here, I don't think that skills like this one should work the same in a video game as they do for pen and paper. Skills like that work better when there's a dm who can react to your elaborate pickpocket plans and improvise the fallout of a failed check to be something better and more interesting than "and now this npc and all its plot critical faction are hostile to you forever". Pickpocket can have very dramatic consequences if you get caught and the game is not ready to handle it. What I would do: No rolls, no savescumming incentive, just a dc. If your skill is higher you pickpocket. If not, you get a message that you can't do it. Add a few scripted encounters where you might have to distract someone with dialogue to pickpocket (gothic 2 style!) or stuff like that. For encounters like that where the consequences of failure are more defined we can have rolls too!

I'm not a big fan of the persuade/intimidate/bluff split. Stuff like that is fine for P&P but in a videogame it just means you get a couple of each of these checks per campaign instead of many checks of a generalised social skill. Skills should not get so granular for a barely used mechanic.

Generally I wish skills mattered more. I love F:NV's way of adding skill checks to dialogue choices. It would suit a game like NWN a lot I think.

Encounter design

Do away with damage sponges in general. The OC especially has a pattern of throwing mini-bosses at you with incredibly inflated HP numbers. I don't see the point. It's either boring, or if you're a newby with a suboptimal build you'll do fine for most of the game up to the point where you find your first bloated dire spider (100xp!) where you'll hit a brick wall. This damage sponge philosophy of difficulty also affects caster encounters where difficulty is seen as "sorc nukes you with damage spells and facetanks a few greatsword power attacks" instead of "fragile mage who buffs allies and strategically disables enemies".

I think I know what they're thinking. "We can't have our cool boss/miniboss just get one shot by a lucky crit!" All I have to say to that is "welcome to d&d". Besides, if you're a caster focused on save-or-die/save-or-suck spells, you still one shot everything, including the final boss who is not at all ready for the timestop & horrid wilting scroll combo and dies before the music starts, so once again, all this design choice managed to do is make martial classes suck. More.

Outside the OC, J'nah is particularly egregious. The thingy Tymofarrar gives you is just not good enough if you're a melee martial character (unless you're a paladin in which case you can mop the floor with anyone who looks at you the wrong way). This sucks because she's the required boss of chapter 1 and Tymofarrar is the optional boss, but you get an I-win-button for the optional dragon and for her you just get moderately-damaging-dust. Seriously, my fighter just couldn't win without cheese. Even when the gnolls bother to show up (sometimes they just don't) they can't kill her! Ugh! J'nah! Just the very mention of the name fills me with bile!

Boss cutscenes

I know devs want to have a cool cutscene before boss fights. What I want is to be buffed during the boss fights. Please don't force a cutscene before the fight that wastes buff time. If you make it mandatory at least make the buff timer stop counting during the cutscene. OC and NWN1 in general doesn't really do that but NWN2 does it sooo much that I couldn't resist mentioning it even though the list is about NWN1.

General unresponsiveness

I've selected a target and my character just waits and wastes a round stuck like an idiot. Especially annoying with enemy sorcerers where I know that if I'd just hit them on time they'd lose their spell. Instead, they blast me twice before my char decides to respond. Worse for ranged chars. Sometimes they decide that they just don't feel like attacking at all. These problems are probably baked in the engine so deep that it would require a rewrite to fix but I can dream.

Party xp penalty

Less xp for summons is bad. Class features shouldn't cost xp. I'd get rid of henchman penalty too. Let people do solo play for bragging rights, no need to incentivise it. The henchman penalty is more reasonable I guess, since encounters can change depending on party size. In that case only henchmen should count, not summons. Summons are class features, they should not be penaltised, or change encounter size. Or should they? hmm.

Party size

Dear god OC, let me have more henchmen. Why just one at a time. Give me at least two! I mean druids can have a small army with them from level one. Why not just let me hire as many henchmen too? Scratch what I said before, if you want to impose arbitrary party limits I don't see why summons don't count. As it stands I only ever take Tomi with me for every class except rogue. Here comes halfling death! Which brings us to

More follower commands

Ok since for some reason I can't control a party at all, at least give me more commands. My top picks would be to choose attack target and a retreat command. No Tomi I don't want you to fucking tank. No, just go away, step back. No don't provoke 8 AoO while running around to hit a random guy on the other side of the enemy blob we're fighting. NO! You stupid dead motherfucker.

Attacks of Opportunity

AoO implementation needs to change in many ways. For one I hate it when I position my melee next to a caster to threaten them only for a random 1HD skeleton to run around, provoke an AoO, which results in the mage spell not provoking a AoO and my char getting blasted in the face. So it should somehow be player choice to execute an AoO probably by having the option to disable them or lock on an enemy and only allow AoO against them for example. Secondly the AoO that are results of running just break the game. Sometimes they just trigger randomly when you run to attack an enemy, other times your character is sitting still in the wrong spot and enemies get AoOs against them. It's just a mess. IMO if the AI can't handle it, and it can't, it's already a dealbreaker, but it seems the engine doesn't have that tight a grip on them either, so I guess I'd just disable movement based AoO. Come to think of it, the AI can't handle ranged attack or casting AoO as well so maybe that stuff should be toggleable for single player campaigns.

Better caster follower control

Caster followers are so completely useless. They just start casting a spell and give up in the middle of it. Boddyknock just looks at me uselessly, does half a casting animation and stops, until he dies. Why does he die? Because when he decides to finally cast he makes sure to do it in the middle of 8 angry orcs who are trying to kill him and given 8 simultaneous AoO they do. I don't know if this happens just on my machine but I reinstalled and it persists. Would be great if they cast on command.

Skill allocation

Wouldn't it be great if that useless "recommended" button actually raised the skills you have already chosen to raise instead of sticking with the initial package bullcrap? It would also be great if the raised skills were sorted by ranks so you can find them fast when you level up.

Dance of Death

While I prefer this to NWN2 where they just sit still and pummel each other it has some minor annoyances. Sometimes my char insists on trying to sidestep in an unwanted direction. A more major annoyance is how the bigger weapon/person retreats from the smaller one. In a way it makes sense; A halfling with a dagger needs to get close before striking. But IMHO, said halfling should also take a step back from the greatsword too when not attacking. In fact they should take more steps back than forward. A halforc with a greatsword should threaten a bigger area, and enemires should generally retreat from that instead of just getting closer. It creates weird situations where my barbarian keeps retreating from small enemies and my favourite: Tomi just pushing far into the enemy lines with his little knife and getting surrounded while my tank keeps retreating. Tomi then, of course, dies.

Arcane spell failure

I'd love no arcane spell failure out of combat. I think it would make for a great quality of life change. I wanna buff myself without the goofiness of stripping naked (or wearing clothes ok) and taking up quickslots for armour and shields. Even worse for HotU where you can't buy cheap clothes to wear so you literally have to be wandering about the streets naked. We can't have that. Most affected by this is the

Bard

I wanna love bard but the aforementioned lack of arcane spell failure out of combat makes some of my favourite self buffing warrior bard builds annoying to play. Also, if only they had a few more skill points. Also also, if only they had rogue weapons. It's weird that I have to spend a feat to have a rapier bard, but no feat for a tower shield + morning star bard. Not that I don't thnik the latter is cool. It just feels it's not the vibe the devs intended. For example if you go for the morning star self buffing warrior build, you'll discover that a pretty good 3rd level spell, keen edge, is worthless for you, because it's for slashing weapons. Pure bard only gets sickles! Feels somehow inappropriate idk. I suppose it's because when I think red mage I think rapier. Bard would be my fav class but those minor things bother me. Not the fault of NWN, this is all on 3E.

Ranged combat

Non arcane archer ranged combat is a pain. It's almost unviable. Slings should have strength bonus applied. I mean thrown weapons do and a sling is supposed to amplify that, so maybe for slings it should be applied like two handed weapons! Tbh all non mechanical ranged weapons should be mighty, with the amount being dependent on their quality. It might also be reasonable to enable power attack for these too. I guess maybe crossbows should have some dex bonus applied in order to make them viable? Not sure about that one. This, again, is on 3E.

Inventory management

I like keeping my inventory tidy. It would be great if I could designate areas for items so they can get auto sorted to an extent. The lack of this feature makes swapping items with quickslots a pretty messy afair. I'd also love for a DA2 type junk system. Please let me mark my crap as junk and the go to a merchant press the sell all junk button and be done with it. This whole click and drag or double click or right click and pull to the right system just makes my hand hurt. There's just so many junk. I guess I can't hold this against NWN either. Inventory ui is hard and this game is old.

Remaaaaains

You know how when you kill an enemy you have to wait for it to slooowly fade out and the wait for the remains to sloooooowly fade it? Yeah that sucks.

Moonwalking

Sometimes when you click at a location behind yor char, they don't bother changing direction to move there. Ok maybe this one should stay. It wouldn't be NWN without it.

HotU undermountain entrance switch

That damned switch has wasted a lot of my time. I'm tired of wanting to try a new build, rush through the beginning only to get pushed out of bounds when trying to flip the switch! After that the only options are either Relic of the Reaper or Ragequit!

Sound balancing

Best seen at J'nah's introductory cutscene. It's so shitty! There's that obnoxious sound effect that keeps playing in the background (SoU does that a lot) and the voices are so quiet I can barely hear them. Yes, I changed the volume balances where voices are 1.0 and everything else 0.1. It changed very little.

Loot

I guess this one has to be mentioned in a list like this. You know how it goes. You open one of those chests that are near impossible to break after removing or facetanking a deadly trap on it, only to find that it contains 2 arrows inside. It should objectively be changed but that would feel like losing an old friend.

I still remember that chest in the peninsula district. Tomi couldn't open it. I marked it on my map with a marker. Came back a few levels later. There was a bullet inside.

HotU First playthrough, long-time player

7 Upvotes

Hello all,

I am a longtime player with thousands of hours online. However, I never finished the OC (chapter 3ish, I can’t even remember), and I’ve never played SoU or HotU.

Recently I saw a post that made me feel like trying again (I’ve been burnt out of online play). I’m currently having fun in the OC (halfway through the waterdavian quest) with an armoured wizard (fighter dip).

I think for SoU I’d like to go sorcerer with paladin dip instead, cha based, with divine might.

Start with:
Str 14
Dex 10
Con 14
Int 14
Wis 8
Cha 16

And pump cha to 22ish?

I’d take deekin as a companion, as I’ve heard that he is the best part of the game, so I believe should be finishing around level 26ish by end game.

I’d pick up still spell, but instead of the autostill epic feats, I think I’d be aiming for the 0% ASF that I have heard is craftable in HotU

However, this will get me to a final ab of around 33
(14 bab, 8 str, 1 wf, 2 EWF, and I heard I can get upwards of +8 on a Longsword).

Does that seem like enough? Keeping in mind that I am also a nearly full sorcerer with blasty spells.

Also, for fun, give me some favourite builds of yours.

NWN2 EE Bugged/Borked

8 Upvotes

Please help, I am losing my mind.

So, I got the NWN2 EE as a Christmas present. I've been a fan of the game since it was released in 2006, and I wanted a way to make the game work with my blue light filter. And it did! It worked! It even let me use my saves from the OG version, and hung on to my characters and mods.

Until I reset Windows, keeping local files. Now the game is bugged. Outdoors is fine. Game runs as normal, no bugs, no visual glitches. When I go inside, well. Things get weird. Everything is covered in black bars and squares, and it applies to the map as well (photo included). The intro video is also weird (picture included).

I have tried everything I can think of and I am slowly losing my mind. I uninstalled and reinstalled the game. I copied all of my OG files onto an external hard drive, then deleted all of the files. I uninstalled EE, rebooted, turned off cloud saves, opened the game, still bugged. I kept playing with the bugs, because they weren't that big of a deal, but the game became increasingly less playable over time.

I used AMD's clean up utility to boot into windows safe mode, have them remove the driver, and then reinstalled a current driver. Still bugged. I want to do a proper DDU, but I can't find just the driver. I'm only finding automatic utilities - the detect and download, the clean up utility, or the adrenaline software.

The only thing I've managed to accomplish so far is lose all of my saved games, because apparently the external hard drive didn't properly keep track of those. Or I have some of the files in the wrong spots because I didn't note carefully enough what went where. Who knows! At this point, I'm more upset about the fact that the game isn't working than the save being gone, but I sure wouldn't complain if I could get the save back. The only cloud save that was preserved somehow dropped me as a level 1 character into the docks district in Neverwinter. With no quests or any notion of the story.

Has anyone else encountered this? Are there fixes? The game runs fine on my old, crappy laptop who's screen is half broken, so it's not the game as a whole. There's just something going on with the game on my computer and I have no idea what. I'd prefer to not have to try to reset windows and do a completely clean install just so I can play this game without giving myself a horrendous headache, but here we are! I don't know what if any data I'd want to keep, or how to back any of it up.

NWN1 Cleric build for OC

10 Upvotes

I'm planning to come back to nwn1 after a very long time. What cleric build would you recommend for OC? I'm considering pure str cleric, cleric with 1 lvl of monk and cleric with 1 or 2 levels of fighter. Currently leaning towards monk dip. What would you recommend and why?I know oc is easy enough with anything, but I still want to maximize power.

As a tangent: is there an equivalent of SCS for Neverwinter nights?

NWN2 Nwn2 movement stuttering

1 Upvotes

I'm becoming mad with fix this problem with my computer, I tried the two solutions that I found, the dll file and the expanded client, but neither of these worked for me, I always have the problem, I tried also to change the language in Italian, installed the 3 patch but nothing, I don't really know what I'm doing wrong.

PS: it's the gog version, complete edition, and I have an AMD computer

Viable Monk build or only in theory?

13 Upvotes

I just watched this YouTube video on a pure monk build. Looks like a fun character to play, but is it viable or just a theoretical build? I'm a bit thrown by the fact that he places all levelling points in strength after the initial build.

HotU Just started nwn for the first time this year. Over a hundred hours, in HotU, and this is clearly the best character.

Swordflight ch2 henchman (Snajagh) got bugget after domination effect (with solution)

5 Upvotes

I've just successfully recovered one of my henchmen (Snajagh) from complete brickness after he got "dominated" by Ulaz in the Goblin Fortress. After the effect faded away, he just stood and did not respond to the commands. On top of that, his inventory became inaccessible.

The usual suggestion in such cases is to reset the 'NW_L_HENHIRED' variable to 0 and then to 1, but this didn't help. So with the help of ChatGPT, I've begun to dig into NWScript and the debug console, playing on Android complicated the matter a little )

The main hypothesis was that the domination effect somehow erased the henchman attributes, as you can hire almost any NPC with the help of the debug mode. Still, it won't act as one because the henchman needs some guidelines on what to do in certain cases, unlike general NPCs.

Check all the variables that make henchman a henchman. I've used the following snippet:

object p=GetFirstPC();
SendMessageToPC(p,"=== "+GetName(OBJECT_SELF)+" ===");
SendMessageToPC(p,"Commandable="+IntToString(GetCommandable(OBJECT_SELF)));
SendMessageToPC(p,"AI="+IntToString(GetAILevel(OBJECT_SELF)));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Listening="+IntToString(GetIsListening(OBJECT_SELF)));
SendMessageToPC(p,"HB="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_HEARTBEAT));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Perception="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_NOTICE));
SendMessageToPC(p,"SpellAt="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_SPELLCASTAT));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Attacked="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_MELEE_ATTACKED));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Damaged="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DAMAGED));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Disturbed="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DISTURBED));
SendMessageToPC(p,"CombatEnd="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_END_COMBATROUND));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Conversation="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DIALOGUE));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Spawn="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_SPAWN_IN));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Rested="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_RESTED));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Death="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DEATH));
SendMessageToPC(p,"UserDef="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_USER_DEFINED_EVENT));
SendMessageToPC(p,"Blocked="+GetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_BLOCKED_BY_DOOR));
The console indeed showed that every variable was unset
Barazh for comarisson

Then I just copied all the variable values from Barazh to Snajagh using the pick object tool in the NWScript editor:

SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_HEARTBEAT,"x0_ch_hen_heart");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_NOTICE,"x0_ch_hen_percep");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_SPELLCASTAT,"sk_henspell001");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_MELEE_ATTACKED,"x0_ch_hen_attack");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DAMAGED,"x0_ch_hen_damage");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DISTURBED,"sk_ondstrb001");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_END_COMBATROUND,"x0_ch_hen_combat");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DIALOGUE,"sk_henconv001");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_SPAWN_IN,"x0_ch_hen_spawn");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_RESTED,"x0_ch_hen_rest");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_DEATH,"sk_hendeath001");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_USER_DEFINED_EVENT,"x0_ch_hen_usrdef");
SetEventScript(OBJECT_SELF,EVENT_SCRIPT_CREATURE_ON_BLOCKED_BY_DOOR,"x0_ch_hen_block");
SetCommandable(TRUE,OBJECT_SELF);
SetAILevel(OBJECT_SELF,AI_LEVEL_DEFAULT);
SetListening(OBJECT_SELF,TRUE);
SetAssociateListenPatterns(OBJECT_SELF);

And voila, Snajagh is alive again!

As a software dev myself, I'm really impressed by what can be achieved by scripting in this game, even on Android. Cheers, I hope no one runs into the same problem as I did, but just in case, I want to publish the solution here.
