Over 90 Day Progress 2 years of Nofap, how it saved my life

After two years of nofap, I would like to share my story to motivate others who think that this can't be done.

I am 31 years old right now, and I quit watching around two years ago. It has been a really hard journey, but also a really rewarding one.

I started watching adult content when I was 17 years old, and I kept watching without even realizing it was a serious problem. I knew it was wrong, but I never really tried to quit. I had very low self confidence and very low self esteem. I didn't think much about my future or where my life was going.

The only thing I was thinking about was when I would get the chance to watch, since I always had someone living in the same room with me. Whenever I had an opportunity, I would do it. By that time, I couldn't even speak normally to people or look them in the eyes during a conversation. I felt really awkward around others.

When I was 25, I found a job in another city and moved there alone. That's when things got even worse. I was watching almost every day, sometimes for 5 hours, and I had a level of depression I had never experienced before in my life.

That's where my journey started.

I wanted to quit, and for the next three years I tried over and over again. I relied heavily on willpower, but it wasn't enough. When I was 27, I finally decided to seek help. I realized that all the random things I was doing weren't getting me anywhere.

So I started learning. I read about what adult content does to the mind and what can be done to counter those effects. Slowly, things started to change and I tried more effective ways that I eventually reached the point where I said goodbye to it for good.

Now, two years later, I can honestly say it was worth every single thing I went through. Every urge I resisted. Every painful moment. Every time I denied myself that temporary pleasure.

Today, I feel much more comfortable talking to people. I'm social. I enjoy conversations. I enjoy spending time with friends and being around people, I am not even recognizable. I started going to the gym and I look way better physically and more mentally

I'm married now, which is amazing. I'm building a business. I think about the future. I think about goals, opportunities, and how to create a better life for myself. I have more confidence and better social skills than I ever had before.

Two years is not a very long time, but it was enough to completely change my life.

To everyone trying to quit: keep going. Keep pushing through the hard days.

I'm talking to you from the future.

It's worth it.

Questions on Fasting and Masturbation

As-salaamu-alaikum,

Ramadan Mubarak! May Allah take us safely through Ramadan, and may He make Ramadan easy for us, and may He accept our efforts.

Every Ramadan, we get flooded with the same questions. So I am preemptively re-sticking last year's post, which addresses the most common Ramadan questions on this subreddit. Please read the following before making a post:

  1. Engaging in immoral sexual behavior while fasting is a serious issue.

  2. Watching porn is Haraam under any circumstances. Watching porn, or starting to masturbate makes the fast Makrooh. The fast does not break immediately, but the reward of the fast is lost.

  3. For masturbation, the fast breaks at either the point of orgasm or ejaculation. Whether a dry orgasm breaks the fast, or fluid gushing forth breaks the fast, differs between schools of thought, and may differ for men and women. Please consult a scholar whom you trust for a specific answer. Many of them can be contacted anonymously via email these days, for those who are shy to ask directly. May Allah protect us from having to ask this question.

  4. If a fast is broken, it has to be made up after Ramadan. The manner in which one has to make up for broken fasts differs between schools of thought. Most say that 1 fast is needed, while others (mainly the Maliki madhab) say that 60 consecutive fasts are needed. The latter group has further rulings if multiple fasts were broken and one is not physically or financially capable of making them up. These issues should be answered by a scholar on a case-by-case basis. Please speak to a qualified scholar for more detailed advice on this matter.

  5. Even if a fast is broken, one should not eat until iftaar.

  6. The rulings on broken fasts don't apply to actions done outside of fasting during the nights of Ramadan, but we should avoid sinful acts at all times and focus on maximizing ibaadah in the nights of Ramadan.

  7. Allah is Al-Afuo, Al-Ghafoor and Al-Raheem – he loves to Forgive, Pardon and is Merciful to His servants. Sincerely beg for his forgiveness. Get back on track, learn from the mistake, and try to do better.

  8. Wet dreams do not invalidate the fast.

  9. If you have a wet dream before suhoor, then it is recommended to perform ghusl before Fajr time sets in. However, if you perform ghusl after Fajr time starts, your fast will still be valid.

  10. It's clear that many of you don't read the FAQ or the rules. Please read these before posting.

  11. Anyone found giving generalized fiqh rulings where there are differences of opinion between schools of thought, or where an individualized answer may be required by a scholar, will receive a temporary ban.

May Allah grant us Barakah in Ramadaan, may He make the month easy for us, and may he protect us from all sins.

Advice Request My husband is a porn Addict

My husband recently told me that he's been struggling with porn addiction. I know it must have taken a lot of courage for him to tell me, and instead of judging him, I want to be there for him. I'm really proud that he wants to change and is willing to put in the effort. We're both learning as we go, and I'm trying my best to support him in the right way, but honestly, I don't always know what the best thing to do is.

If anyone here has gone through this, I would really appreciate your advice. What helped? What made recovery easier? And what are some things I should avoid doing? We want to give this our best shot. Any guidance or encouragement would mean a lot to us.

Thank you.

I am worried my heart will die eventually. Im worried Allah will resent me for not being strong enough to stay away. I would greatly appreciate any advice on the topic thank you

Advice Request Trying

I have had porn addiction for nearly 5 years at first it was controllable maybe 2 months before relapse, then it got worse hours of watching then it slowed down, a video and masturbation, I could not stop, no supportive community, ashamed (as I was trying to be a better muslim) and still in the habit, I slipped today but not watching porn, I've been porn free for over 100 hours as I learned a breakthrough in my routine for that but masturbating is something I was not able to control and it mostly feels like I can leave porn, but not masturbation even if it is done without porn, I'm nearly 21 years and 6 months old and Might get married in 2028 or by end of it and I'm scared that this addiction might ruin my life but I can't stop it. Please help me. I feel guilt but I can't stop, I repent but I fall back maybe not in a day, maybe after two or three days or a week, but It has affected me mentally. Help me.

Advice Request Is it possible to enter into a relationship during early recovery?

This is my fifth day. I feel like I’ve wasted so much time, and I feel that the suffering of those around me stems from me; my addiction led me to actions that likely hurt them. I found myself waiting for their appreciation for anything I do now, but it’s okay. Today, I tried to escape by indulging in "soft" porn—watching some Facebook videos and looking at photos of models—but I didn't cross the line beyond that. Could being in a relationship alleviate this urge, or is that a bad idea?

Motivation/Tips Can we have YouTube without the haram distractions?

Bismillah. Assalamu alaikum everyone,

Many of us have struggled with this addiction for a long time. One of the ways we can fall short is through the things we come across on social media.

At the same time, we tell ourselves that we can’t completely leave Instagram, YouTube, TikTok and the rest because we also use them for Islamic content. We may open YouTube intending to watch one lecture, but then see inappropriate ads or recommendations, fall into endless scrolling, or get pulled towards music and other time-wasting content.

I’m a web developer, and for many years I’ve been thinking about whether there could be a better alternative. I finally decided to start building one.

The idea is simple: a place to watch Islamic lectures without ads, comments, Shorts, unrelated recommendations or an algorithm trying to keep you scrolling. Just the lectures, organised into topics and series.

It is still in its very early stages, but I’ve started adding lecture series from speakers many of us already listen to.

I want to be upfront that this is my own project. It is completely free, and I’m not posting this just to advertise it. One of the main reasons I built it was because I’ve seen how easily YouTube and social media can lead us away from what we originally opened them for.

If this is a problem you also face, I would really appreciate it if you tried the site and gave me honest feedback. Does it actually help? Is anything confusing? What would make it more useful for someone trying to stay away from harmful content?

If anyone would like to help test it or contribute ideas, feel free to comment. JazakAllahu khayran.

Motivation/Tips Safer surfing of web

Just some random tips that came to mind, maybe they will be of benefit:

  1. Install ad blockers in your browsers
  2. Use Firefox browser or anything else other than chrome when viewing Youtube videos. For some reason, Youtube ads aren't being blocked properly on chrome, but for me they're being blocked successfully on Firefox
  3. Install the Haram Blur plugin (available in chrome and Firefox). This free tool automatically blurs out any female in any images/videos while surfing

Also please feel free to share any other tools/tips for safer surfing

Advice Request How do you do this when single?

I'm struggling with this. I've been brainwashed all my life when it comes to 🌽. You know, that it's healthy and it's good to have an 'outlet' so to speak.

I know I have a problem, I know it's bad but I still struggle with it.

My previous programming keeps telling me 'what else can I do?' because I'm single and that magically if I find a wife then everything will be solved. But I know it's not like that.

But, what else can I do? How can I prevent relapsing?

Progress Update This post for people who relapse a lot and cant control themselves.

So yeah guys.. If you find yourself relapsing on daily/weekly then you are right to stay with me.. Even if you are a person going months then relapsing this might help.

Relapsing to your mind means you spend a lot of time living inside your mind. Maladaptive day dreaming or normal day dreams are very bad for you. I will go in details:

When you go relapse then after relapsing you go dream about being a king, or start listening to music and dream about achieving things.. You are basically telling yourself that i relapsed but i'm ok with it. Same thing happens when you relapse then you go play video games or eat junk food... But day dreaming is the worst of it...

When you day dream you live in this fake reality. Like even relapsing to porn.. When you watch porn, you day dream the scenes in your mind and fantasize that you are doing "x" and "y" with a woman etc... You are basically living a fake lie..

Day dreaming acts as a numbing machine. It numbs you.. Just imagine you are fasting and after 24 hours of no food you are starving.. then now you day dream about food. Day dreaming about foods will make you hungrier.. But eating real food it is the only that can satisfy you. No day dreaming of any food can give you satisfaction..

So what you need to do is to focus on reality. Most people day dream about being doers etc but in reality they are sitting on their couch eating chips and watching tv.. You need to not accept those fake lies.

Now you need to avoid day dreaming and focus on reality. Do more things and dont numb yourself. Do more of each day alright. Stop numbing yourself for god sake. Do more in reality. This will make relapse 10x harder. You watch porn 3 times but now you go read books, workout, study, take course, drive to new places, create something, travel but dont day dream..

Second thing is that most relapses happens in the mind before you know it. The less you live in ur mind the less those relapses happens.

For me personally most my relapses happens if i see a very attractive woman. I go home and start fantaszing about her. This is where thing go south fast. Train yourself that those day dreams are fake.. They are basically lie. You are on your bed day dreaming about having sex with a celebrity which is so fake.. So you tell yourself this is a lie. You distract yourself with anything else and get out of this state.

The more you accept those lies. The harder it will be to stop relapsing. Libido could be a 1000% but still if your mind is controled a relapse is not possible.

Every time you see a very beautiful woman that make you eventually relapse it goes like this.. You day dream about her, you fantasize, you choose the right scene in your mind the right clothes etc. You do all in your mind.. and you relapse.

Keep telling yourself this is not happening..

There is a muslim schoolar once said "Ibn alqayyim": "Accepting the lies of day dreaming shows that a person has very low self esteem"

So keep that in your mind.. Accept reality

After controlling your mind now accept only reality. Only real sex and not those fake lies. At that stage you have to choices... 1- to get married and have family.. 2- to still be on hard mode...

Im doing hard mode for a long time hopefully.. Now getting married any soon. But dont accept any fake lies.. Only real sex or no sex. It is not possible to relapse if you apply this.

One last thing.. Just imagine day dreaming that you are elon musk.. Doing those crazy things and achieving and creating stuff. In reality if you read 1 page.. Just 1 page of a book it will give you more knowledge to your life than day dreaming you are elon musk.. Only 1 page is more real than that fake thing

Advice Request I just cannot stop

I have been addicted for over 2 decades (started when I was around 6), I am now 28. Decided to stop at 16, but failed to do so. It's gone to the point where I cannot even feel guilt anymore and I have become hard hearted. I cannot be happy, sad, angry, etc. I have been diagnosed with schizophrenia in addition as well, so u can guess how bad it is for me. And I believe this illness is due to my sins as I believe it's spiritual.

How do I stop? I have a therapist but it's all for nought

Progress Update Day 3 ✅

Alhamdullah, this is day three without pornography or masturbation. I was surprised this morning by a mysterious private message—as often happens—but this time it was from a pornographic page. It was God’s strength that kept me from sinking back in; I blocked the page. It was a good day; for the first time, I felt as though everyone wanted to talk to me, and I was much more open in return. I can’t even recall how many people I spoke and joked with—something that isn't usually in my nature. I still feel some fatigue and a headache, but things have calmed down. I likely wouldn't have made it this far without the support of everyone who reached out to me—thank you. We are brothers; feel free to message me privately anytime, and I will reply. Hopefully, together, we can break free from this addiction🤍

Motivation/Tips Maladaptive day dreaming

Alhamdulilah I came across a sheikh that said that whenever someone imagines and recalls his punishment for doing something haram. He will refrain from doing it, not because he chose to refrain , but because he physically won’t be able to carry it out anymore.

If you were about to slip into maladaptive daydreaming and someone told you once ur done with the day dreams u will be thrown into a pit of fire, instantly u won’t feel the urge to do it anymore.

May allah guide us all
