Open to genuine conversation here. I'm frustrated because every musical theatre audition is in a room with a loud piano (normally, sometimes loud speaker), or on a large stage that you need to fill, with no mics. But the second you're cast in a show, 99% of the time nowadays the production is mic'd. Context: I have been doing theatre for 15 years and went to a top school for it, so am not a beginner.

I have a naturally lighter Soprano/mix voice that I have good control over and technique, but just have never had a super naturally loud singing voice. I feel like it's doing me a super disservice in auditions, and am frustrated because once you get a part, mic technique actually becomes way more important than just pure volume. There are many things to be miffed about in musical theatre auditioning, haha, but this one just seems so archaic to me that we're still focusing on who can project the most and fill a room when that is not how the actual shows go.

*I know there will be a minority of some houses that don't use mics on their musicals, but I am less interested in talking about that because that's very rare nowadays, and those houses probably have extensive systems in place for that specific space. I'm talking about MT auditioning in general.

Before drama school I was someone who presented quite alternatively and was told that it would be harder for me to get into schools because of how I presented so stopped dying my hair, took piercings out etc. I found in training I fell into being complacent in looking ‘presentable’ as not wanting my appearance to hinder my opportunities. Now I have graduated all I can think about is changing my appearance, however I believe my casting is someone clean cut, quite classic mt. Is how I present myself really going to affect me in a room or is this just something we are conditioned to believe as I don’t really see any performers who present alternatively?

Two genuine questions! One, I keep noticing MANY different audition postings (tons of different companies, not just one) where bass, bari, and tenor role range listings are... strange. Usually listed an octave up, like claiming a bass role needs F3-F5 or something, when I would label it as F2-F4. Is this a human (or AI...?) error looking at music notated in treble clef and missing that it's sung down an octave, or is this a different standard I'm unaware of? (Edit: typo)

I assume regardless that they're not really asking that a "40+ male Frollo" or whoever sing F5 (well into mezzo territory). But I'm curious what's happening.

Second, I keep noticing outright errors or lies in my colleagues' resumes lmfao. I'm not calling them on it, it's none of my business, but wow it's a LOT of people of all different genders and voice types. These are people who get paid for this, at least part time. Their resumes will say something like F2-F6 range, for example, but... I have ears. In this example, I hear them drop into a whisper below C4 and go totally silent below D3, even with vocal fry, and idk about those highs either. Is this... common? Am I shooting myself in the foot by putting only the notes I know I can sing all day every day? Are they shooting themselves in the foot by lying (or being mistaken, maybe with a pitch app) when they are otherwise good singers? 🤔

So I’ve been in voice lessons for about a year, i’m a high baritone/low tenor/baritenor/ whatever you wanna call it. My voice teacher is a professional opera countertenor. So while I’m technically a musical theatre student, I’ve asked him to teach me basic, classical training techniques. Yesterday I was at home screwing around and my playlist put on “Angel of Music” from Phantom and I sang along, given that I’m trying to work on my head voice. I figured I’d screw around and follow Christines part, and hit an F5 in head voice, it was resonant, had this nice vibrato to it. Idk if the note Christine hits is an F5, but that’s what I sang (I double checked it by playing the note on my piano and trying to match the pitch.) Is that high? I’m kind of proud of myself

Hi crew! I am an experienced professional dancer/singer/actor, 27F. I do a lot of musical theatre and I am a dancer first, but I'm a great singer as well. After casting/creative teams hear me sing they will often ask me to prepare cover material, and this is where the problem lies LOL.

The problem is, when I go into a room to sing any material that isn't extremely practiced and "safe" for me, I get extremely nervous, and material that was easy for me to sing at home becomes pushy and unreliable. I've gotten feedback from several Broadway shows that the reason I didn't book was that my singing isn't strong enough to cover, which is so frustrating when I know I am capable of singing the material, just not in a room with casting/creatives lol.

I've been working on my technique very seriously for about a year and a half now and am in the process of building up a really strong technical foundation to rely on, but I'm not completely there yet. Also yes I do take beta blockers before singing. Another thing to note is that most of the time I'm asked to sing right after dancing, so I don't have the time to do a meditation right beforehand or anything like that.

I'd love any tips or performance anxiety courses or vocal+somatic practices that y'all have to offer! I'm tired of this being the reason I don't book LMAO

The local high school is doing Gypsy for the musical. I think this is an odd choice. What do you think?

Hi!! For context, I’m 26f and have been involved in theatre since I was a child, with lots of musical experience. I recently moved to a new town and I don’t know anyone! The community theatre here is holding open auditions for their 2026-2027 season and I just signed up. The requirements are to prep a monologue under 2 minutes and 60 seconds of a song. I have never done an open audition that could span multiple shows. Any advice on how to navigate this? If there is one show that grabs my interest, should I focus my audition on that show and pick themes similar? Should I focus more on showcasing my range and ability? Anything helps, thanks!

I'm currently in a community theatre production of Matilda the musical. And we're using a Shadow scrim for the acrobat and escapologist scenes. Hello!, I am a College Actor and the upcoming semester has Godspell as one of the shows for the upcoming season. I was wondering (since I want to audition for Jesus) what monologue could I pair with (Corner of the Sky) to really up the chances?

So I am auditioning for a lead role for my high schools musical but i feel as if being known to be late to every rehearsal last year will greatly ruin my chances of getting the lead role. I want to impress the two teachers during the audition, I want them to say, "Wow... he really improved over the summer!" for some short context on what i was late to last year: I was an ensemble for last years high school musical and a lead role for a one act my drama class did which i got an outstanding acting award for. What im trying to ask is what really makes a director notice improvement?

i am a huge fan of musical theater but i have never actually been in or tried it, im 22 just graduated college and its something that has always been in the back of my mind, i just feel like im too old, any advice on how to get started?

I have an audition tomorrow for a show - the sides I've been given show the character I'm reading for getting increasingly annoyed/frustrated at their counterparts. For anonymity, I've covered the dialogue (also a new work - parody/comedy musical), but I'm thoroughly getting a kick out of my notes.

What have been some of your favorite acting notes you've written for yourself?

I am a Baritone (G2 to F#4) and I just cannot find any actual baritone songs. Every "baritone audition song" has a singer who has a very tenor timbre and stays up in the E4 to G4 range the whole song, making an actual baritone unable to do it. :(

Seeking feedback from anyone who runs cues for live theatre! (in the video, pretend the actors are actually speaking those lines and the sound op is clicking Go when it pops up)

So I was part of the Mean Girls production for my school (Kevin G go mathletes!) and I couldn't help but notice how stressed out our solo sound op was and how tough it was for him to hit every cue.

So in attempt to help, I built this app for any sound op, from school to community theatre, who's overwhelmed running sound because they don't have enough help.

Cue listens through the mics you already have and follows along in the script. When it hits a cue line, it flashes a big yellow GO button so you can't miss it. You still press GO yourself, nothing fires on its own. It's basically a second pair of ears in the booth with you, and a way to stay organized and see exactly where you are in the script.
