I can't understand how anyone would complain about state income tax. It's just rich people that feel like they are above it all. I took home $72k last year and still got almost $1,200 back from Michigan State. It's really not affecting the type of people you would excuse complaining about it. I think a lot of people are sorely uninformed about state tax credits however. Like you have to press a few extra buttons to get to the forms but you can get a huge break for your rent, for one example.

Maybe I can shed some light. This is how my conversations go with my conservative BIL:

You can't make him admit he is wrong; he'll uses bad faith logic to talk down to you the whole way through your attempt to correct him

and then, if you can corner him somehow, it wasn't important to the topic

and if it IS undeniably important to the topic, he didn't really care about the topic

and if it's something he does care about, then you're a tryhard that wants to embarrass him

there's just no payoff, ever, to trying to help him reach a better understanding.

If right-wing propagandists were a niche market (like they used to be, and would still be in a just world), their embarrassments would be infrequent, easier to point to, and easier to laugh at. But they are such a massive group, constantly fucking around, that any individual act of impropriety becomes immediately enveloped in the tsunami wave of shit behaviour these people engage in every single day. I can't even remember who was caught being paid by Russia. It's too much information; it's exhausting.

It's the same thing with Trump. If you try to point out any specific shitty thing he's done, you end up looking like the crazy person because ten thousand worse things have happened between then and now. Conservatives are much more keenly aware of this dynamic than the rest of us, and that's why it is one of their official strategies.

Diversity is good because you get exposed to viewpoints and ways of thinking that are not your own. This is usually beneficial in work environments, as a diverse group of workers may be able to solve issues/attract customers/think in ways that a group of (for example) all white men could not.

Equity is good because it creates a fairer playing field for people who have been disadvantaged by America’s long history of structural racism/sexism/queerphobia.

Inclusion is good because we learned in kindergarten that excluding people for things they can’t change is a dick move.

How could any of these things be bad, unless you want minorities to be a permanent underclass?

I can actually comment on DOGE to a certain degree.

I was an intern at a government oversight federal agency working to investigate waste, fraud, and abuse in the federal government. I had a job offer with that agency lined up for after I graduated law school.

During the federal hiring freeze and DOGE cuts, my job offer was revoked. After effectively firing me, DOGE proceeded to take credit for investigations I had helped work on that were concluded before DOGE was formed. They never had any part in those investigations and fired many people who did work on them. This wasn't uncommon. They fired thousands of people investigating waste in the government, then took credit for those investigations.

Basically, DOGE was there to lie to you because the administration doesn't want government oversight agencies limiting them from committing fraud themselves. It was a con.

It's been going on for at least 10 years on this site.

I remember in 2016, the main politics and news subs were staunchly pro-Bernie Sanders - makes sense given his base was under 40 years old. Mainstream sentiment was anti-establishment and anti-Hillary.

All of a sudden, David Brock fires up his "Correct the Record" digital propaganda machine and Reddit switched up almost instantly. Top level comments bashing Sanders, touting Clinton's "electability" and generally spreading establishment propaganda.

This is all very well documented, and it was fucking wild to watch in real time. Comments I made that were heavily upvoted in the weeks prior would get a few upvotes, and then get slammed with downvotes all in one burst, with a bunch of canned replies from his shills. The internet is dead.
