I rescued these beauties from a neglected median today!

A new study, published in Royal Society Open Science, reveals that moss cushions produce surprisingly complex electrical activity, with patterns that undulate across the velvety patch in dynamic waves.

Unfortunately google is not super helpful. I got a mix of live mosses (variety pack dealie, I'm not sure which is what tbh) because I want to use moss in bioactive and bog set ups in the future, and figured I'd start trying to keep and grow some now. It's all in a bin with chunky charcoal at the bottom, a layer of weed barrier, and a small layer of fluval stratum. Water is distilled. I've been keeping it closed to keep the humidity in, and it's on a shelf under a T8 grow light.

I'm just learning about keeping live moss, and would love some advice on what's happening and what I can do better. Thank you!

Hi,
I would like to grow moss on a nearly vertical (slightly tilted upwards) concrete stockade. It is facing north north east, so it gets a little bit of sun in the very early morning hours. The slab is kinda porous so it should be able to hold the roots of the moss. The area is huge, a slab is about 1.20x1.50 m and it's around 80 slabs.
What moss species is best suited for this? We are in central Europe, so it should also be a species that is home to this area.
And how do I apply it to get the best results?

Hello everyone! Have have tried to research this on my own but an kind of stumped. I know to identify moss species you need magnification. I am looking for something that I can use to get at least close to finding the species of mosses in my local area. I don't have a room for a big bulky microscope and I also don't want to spend a ton of money. I am very much a hobbyist. I got into moss from building terrariums, and I want to be able to know which mosses I put in my terrariums and be able to label my propogations boxes more effectively. I collect small amounts (responsibly of course, I am careful about how much I take and where and when) from my local area and then propogate them indoors. There are several mosses from different locations but I can't tell of they are the same moss or just similar looking. I am ok with not getting it exactly, but I would like to get close, at least down to genus. What equipment/books/resources would you recommend to achieve this goal? I have a jewelers loupe and I have a (suposedly) 100x attachment for my phone camera (I dont think its actually 100x, but it does magnify a decent amount). I would also like it if the device itself could take pictures or if there is a way to take pictures through it with my phone, but it isnt an absolute requirement. I also already have iNaturalist which has been a great resource but obviously can't idently mosses acurately from just normal phone pictures. I would really appreciate any help, thank you!

I am trying to put together a terrarium and would love to affix some moss to cork bark and rocks, but every moss i have tried just would not affix to the surfaces. Does anyone know of any moss species that readily attach to natural surfaces and can be purchased?

It is usually major splash zone or can be completely submerged... trying to see if it will be a good substitute for java moss for aquarium tanks/shrimp.

I have fungus gnats in my moss gardens. These are made in 1.5-2” deep dishes with potting soil substrate. They are open, not closed in any way. I read about BTI Water or Gnatrol to be rid of these pests, but want to know if anyone here has experience using either of these products with moss? Do they injure the moss or other plants? Hello! I want to buy some scotch moss and grow it in my yard. My question is, will it grow over bark dust laid over landscape fabric? I like the landscape fabric because it makes pulling out weeds easy as they can’t root deep into the ground. The bark wouldn’t be big chips, more like small standard size bark dust. If the bark is a problem, I could push it away and just have soil underneath and around the moss in hopes it spreads, but still have landscape fabric underneath if that would work? Thanks

I was out in the back woods area of WI and came across an area of moss that I got a few pieces from. There was a strange “moss” growing among them that looks like little palm trees. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I had a bag with sphagnum moss that I wet with distilled water. Thought I'd use it faster for some plants bought bought. For 2 weeks it sat and when I opened it, it smelled gross. There was no mold or anything. Is it OK to use if maybe I rinse it, dry it out and rehydrate it? Originally it was the dry stuff you wet to expand.
