Recently started playing java and noticed that the colours in java is duller and game is laggier compared to bedrock. (+ what optimisation mods/plugins should i install?)

Disclaimer I am NOT saying that java is worse than bedrock.

I've been playing on bedrock my whole life and only quite recently have access to java. As someone who plays bedrock i would say that java is for some reason duller and gloomier even on brightest settings. Also the lag is unbearable sometimes. I play on a non gaming laptop that can run bedrock decently so the lag is a bit annoying. I always hear about these optimisation tools such as optifine but idk which one i should right now use since im pretty clueless about java. And any other things that i should expect when switching to java? (Aside from the benefits such as "less buggy, better features, etc")

To start, you would need to use a mod loader or a different launcher that already has one built in. Personally, I prefer Modrinth; however, the default one is still fine. This video will show you how to install and set up mods.

Now on to the mod. This list is for 26.2, as it is the current newest version at the time. this list is all you need for more performance and a few other things

1) sodium

2) lithium

3) ferrite core

4) entity culling

5) more culling

6)mod menu

7) immediately fast

8) entity texture feature and entity model features

9) sodium extra

10) concurrent chunk management

11) particle core

12) scalable lux

13) ixeris

14) async logger

15) sodium fullbright

16) iris shader

It’s mostly preference but I prefer prism launcher bc u can get curseforge and modrinth mods

True, however, it’s a lot more difficult to get used to for people who are new to modding.

wow thats quite a list, though im more inclined towards the first five

I would recommend looking at a few of the others, like sodium extra, immediately fast, and concurrent chunk management.

Concurrent chunk managent massive speeds up the wait for chunks to load into the game.

Sodium Extra adds a few additional game settings to mess with

That's an insane amount of mods to recommend. OP just needs sodium. And Gamma Utils is WAY better than normal fullbright mods

Few reasons why I chose the mods I did

1) Sodium Fullbright adds a slider built into the Sodium option menu to adjust brightness settings

2) Ferrite core optimizes how Minecraft uses your system ram and the person might not have that much to begin with

3) Concurrent chunk management speeds up chunk loading a fair bit

4) Entity texture feature and entity model feature in case OP wants to play with a resource pack that changes the models of certain entities or other features

5) The same developers who make Lithium also make Sodium people, and it handles optimizing so many things for game logic to handle mob AI and a few more

6) Sodium Extra adds a few nice-to-have additional settings that base Sodium does not have. Some being a coordinates display, fps display, animation settings and a few others.

Your recommendations aren't bad, but this is a new Java player. Someone who is likely new to modding in general. You put too much on there and you'll make them wonder if they're in over their head.

ETF/EMF are completely unnecessary for most Minecraft players. It's a very bad recommendation.

The full bright with the slider is junk. Gamma Utils lets you do it in real time with the up and down arrows on your keyboard. There's also WAY more customization for it. You know how sodium is superior to optifine? That's what gamma Utils is here.

ETF and EMF are nice to have for certain resource packs that require. For example, reimagined and a few others. Now, for the average player that just uses the default pack, your statement is correct.

i disagree with saying a slider is junk. the ability to change the brightness in the brightness setting in your graphic settings can be nice especially for increasing by small percentage. do not get me wrong gamma utils is great for being able to change the brightness with simply hitting a button your keyboard.

Now yes Op probably does not need every single mod the top 5 would be a great base

Install sodium, lithium and more culling + if you want to try shaders install Iris

definitely gonna install lithium and sodium but idk if my laptop can handle shaders

Java is a bit duller because of design choices. It isn't the games fault. And for lag ofc there is. Bedrock is built in c++ which performa better than Minecraft java built on, YK, java. Also Minecraft java uses opengl which is an old graphics API. But the new updates are going to vullkan so it could be faster. And for optimization mods, install fabric mod loader and then install sodium and lithium. Google for more mods.

It could be argued that Java looks better and Bedrock is cartoonishly colored.

u/Firespy_ 14h ago

i guess it's just a matter of preference and accustomization

True. But once I switched to Java, it only took a month for Bedrock to look weird to me

And any other things that i should expect when switching to java?

Avoid autopilot and look stuff up if it's a time consuming task/difficult to undo task.

Eg Redstone, although following the same basic rules works quite differently due to quasi connectivity (there's your first one to look up :p). It is an absolute nightmare when starting out with java redstone but it does allow for some awesome things once you're a bit more familiar.

Farms too, I'm sure you've seen in the videos "X farm BEDROCK", many farms just work differently so although you'll probably be able to get 90% of the way there with your bedrock knowledge, that last difference might catch you off guard if you didn't look before. Witch farm comes to mind first, even HOW the witch spawns is different.

Good luck though dude, feel free to drop a DM if you've got any questions

Thanks for the heads up. I actually watched a video about qc and still think that it doesnt make sense to exist (apparently its a bug but loved so much that it has become a feature?)

1

u/showmethething 14h ago

It lets you do some cool stuff with block updates and allows for more density (assuming you're using it and not actively fighting it). If you're not that into redstone then it does seem a bit pointless and makes things a bit crappy to work with sometimes.

You know it exists, that's the perfect position to be in at this point mate. When you run into "why is this powered???" you'll have an idea of what it is and can dive a bit deeper into it then

1

u/Maple382 10h ago

It was originally a bug, but was used for a ton of redstone stuff and opened up a lot of possibilities. Mojang patched it, but the community got upset about that, so they brought it back.

Sodium is the main one you need. You don't need 14 optimization mods.

Also, don't use a fullbright mod. Use Gamma Utils. It actually lets you toggle night vision on and off. And set it a huge range. The regular fullbright mods aren't toggle-able, so they're left permanently on.

Launcher: Prism
Mod loader: Fabric

That's the main thing you need to know.

apparently sodium is the meta now? i used to hear a lot about optifine so i guess it is outdated?

2

u/CylixrDoesStuff 11h ago

yeah optifine is mainly just for old versions. For example if you're playing pvp on 1.8 on like hypixel you would use optifine (or just lunar client which already has optifine built in anyways)

Sodium is for anything newer. Sadly optifine had a lot of good features put into one mod so you need more mods to get all the features but for the preformance all you need is sodium, and for shaders you need iris.

seeing as you came from bedrock thats really all you need though i use OkZoomer as i was a former optifine user (optifine had a zoom button)

1

u/brassplushie 13h ago

Optifine is extremely outdated garbage. Do not use it. Sodium is the best mod.

try this: https://modrinth.com/modpack/fabulously-optimized

and this: https://prismlauncher.org/

and if that is not enough, then try this: https://linuxmint.com/

2

u/Firespy_ 14h ago

straight up telling me to switch to linux😭

2

u/OptimalAnywhere6282 14h ago

and if *even that* is not enough, try this: https://archlinux.org

and if that is *still* not enough, just buy a new PC.

just the modpack should be enough though.

Okay the graphics on bedrock stink. the brightness and saturation is just off.

You are playing with a different GPU, different gaming machine, different settings, probably different screen too.

Java edition has nothing to do with colors and performance, which will be dependent on monitor, GPU, settings and so much more.

This said, welcome to Minecraft and mods!
