During MAPPA’s 15th anniversary interview earlier today, Yui Ishikawa revealed that although she had already bought the final manga volume and the Bessatsu Shonen Magazine issues, she was too scared to open them. Knowing the story was truly ending made it too painful.

So she waited until recording forced her to read it.

Ishikawa even asked her fellow voice actors not to spoil anything for her, choosing to experience the story only when Mikasa herself had to face it.

For The Final Chapters, Ishikawa only read up to the part covered by each script. During the first session, she stopped around the moment Jean and Connie turned into Titans, saving the rest until Mikasa herself had to face it.

After finally reading the ending, Ishikawa said it hurt knowing she would be the one to end the story with her own hands. But if anyone had to bring it to a close, she felt it had to be Mikasa.

She also said the ending had no simple “right answer.” It wasn’t about who was right or wrong, it was about fully receiving what Hajime Isayama wanted to portray.

That makes Mikasa’s final moments even heavier.

Yui Ishikawa didn’t just voice the ending. She had to carry it 💔
