I’m planning a backcountry camping trip this fall on Lake Superior. I’m looking for one great do it all rod/reel setup that will be durable enough to take the abuse of being strapped to my pack but light enough not to be burdensome. I’m more or less ultralight in the backpacking sense. Specifically I’m looking for an approximately 7 ft medium power rod that will work for pike, walleye, lake trout and is either telescopic or comes in 3+ sections. 3000 size reel. Would pay up to $300 for the rod/reel combo.

Some contenders:

Daiwa ardito travel rod - looks pretty good

St croix triumph travel - only concern is reports of tips breaking

Dobyns Kaden - I have the medium light, love it but way too fragile

Ugly stik travel - god I just hate the lack of sensitivity

TFO traveler - have the light version, it’s great but it’s pricey if you didn’t buy it at a discount

Okuma nomad express inshore travel rod - don’t know it, no thoughts

Kastking Spartacus passage - comes with two tips so there is a backup

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Just moved here from New York and tried to buy a license on the DNR app. Because my drivers license is from New York still, it won’t let me select “MI resident”- so it cost more. Does anyone have experience with this situation or know if there’s a work around? Or would I need a MI drivers license to qualify as a resident?

I know this is a long shot and maybe some people probably find it weird but I am at Kensington three or four days a week. I have the spots I like to hit from the bank but I do not have a boat and oftentimes it's either too busy at the bank or the weeds are just out of control in the spots that I know have fish.

I totally be interested in paying somebody for their time and gas to fish with them on their boat sometime. Just me, my tackle and a few bass rods.

Dm me if you are interested. I'd like to just get out for a 3-4 hour morning trip but timing is up to you.

But ended up with a nice walleye dinner and this surprise cat! Its funny, the only smallie we caught was on a spinnerbait. Ended up landing 5 walleye from 16-24", the cat, a 28" pike, 2 dink perch.

I'm at the u mich bio station through mid August, I'd love to try some of the bigger water but I think I'm going to have to settle for the local lakes and streams. Top choices would be pike, then walleye, then smallies. Would love some advice on locations, popular colors, etc. for pike on Douglas, Burt, Mullet or any of the rivers around. Also interested in UP spots. I do have canoe/ kayak access, but nothing motorized (yet).

I'm planning a bachelor party for my friend's wedding, and one thing I know he would enjoy doing with the boys that we wouldn't normally do is go fishing.

Other than the groom, almost all ~7 of us have little to no fishing experience or equipment, myself included. Truly, I think he would be happy just dropping a line in a puddle in the Walmart parking lot with his friends, but I want to make this a bit more memorable than that.

Any suggestions from experienced Michigan fishers? It seems like most places I've looked can only handle a max of 6 people

I've got a couple little kids I want to go fishing with. I used to do a fair bit of bass and bluegill fishing in Indiana and Connecticut, almost exclusively inland lakes and typically from shore but sometimes canoe. I'm now in West Michigan and would like to branch out into streams and rivers but I don't know anything about fishing for other species or in rivers. Where to go, bait to use, etc. I found one spot on the Grand River with a pier but I never have much luck with pier fishing. Any suggestions?

I fish the rivers every fall for salmon, but I want to try jigging while they're staging. Any tips on what jigs to pursue? What to avoid?

I get a discount to the Rapala line, so I'm looking at (Williamson) Gomame Jigs, Vortex Speed Jigs, etc. Anyone ever use those or have insight on them for salmon in Michigan?

Hi friends! I’m just a mom of an 8 year old boy that loves to fish. I didn’t grow up fishing, but I am trying to learn. We have a pontoon that we can take out on weekends, but during the week, he and I fish from shore or docks or piers. He has a pretty good pole and reel and a semi-stocked tackle box. I am not good at identifying fish yet…I am learning. But we both really enjoy fishing together
With that being said, what are some things I should know to be respectful, make it a good experience, and teach him the best practices?

Going up to Detroit (from southern Indiana)last week of August to visit my daughter for a day or two. After that I’m gonna solo camp and kayak fish for four or five days at a State Park. I’ve fished up at Fayette county a couple times and did really good for small mouth last year but went in early June this year and got skunked. Locals said everything was off a couple weeks because of the winter weather but who knows. Anyway looking to go maybe somewhere in the northern lower part of Michigan on either lake for small mouth. Thought about Tawas Point state park and that area maybe. If you could go anywhere and fish that time of year where would you go? Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Oh yeah this will be my first trip with my own kayak (usually rent) so I’m not too advanced kayaking wise.

I’m planning a solo trip to the UP in the fall as a treat to myself. Just me, no kids or wife, my kayak and hopefully a ton of fish.
I’m planning on going for a weekend, as my wife is in nursing school.

Where are some solid but remote areas I should check out? Some info;
- mainly targeting bass (prefer smallmouth but both good), pike, walleye etc
- I’ve never fished for trout or salmon, and would like to try. Would prefer to not have to buy a bunch of extra stuff for it though.
- I live in mid Michigan, and would prefer no more than a 6 hour drive, so basically the eastern and central part of the UP
- I’m willing to drive an hour ish to get to spots
- would like to split my time between rivers and lakes/ponds
- my kayak is not motorized or pedal drive, and I prefer less intense, and remote bodies of water

Any help would be appreciated!

Hows the bite on Lake Orion lately? I've never fished the lake but its pretty lit up on fishbrain. Anyone fish there in the last few weeks?

If not Lake Orion, any other lakes in the area recommended for mostly bass fishing? we're in a 21' bass boat if that matters.

My dad, my son and I are planning a trip for next fall to come up from Indiana to do some trout fishing. My dad use to fly helicopters in graylings in the 70’s so like to stay in the area so he can reminisce. Does anybody have any recommendations for public spots to get on some trout within an hour drive of the area? That is kid friendly in a sense we do a lot of fishing so he kinda gets it but he’s also 4.

Going to be in the harbor springs area next month and was wondering where I could go and wade fish for smallmouth or pike. I know the area is more known for trout but I don’t know anything about fishing for trout lol.

I am headed to stay in Benzonia over the weekend and into next week and wondering where in the surrounding area will have the best fishing without requiring a boat or charter. Just want to bring my pole and fish for a few hours. Any recommendations on where and what fish/bait to use and go after? Any help would be appreciated!

I’m going to be trout fishing the platte river this week. I’m using my spinner rod and I’ll probably stick with my black/yellow panther martin with gold body and the same lure but with a rooster tail. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

I’ll have a week with some lake MI access no boat maybe a kayak. Most likely shore fishing potentially get a guide for a day if there’s anything worth it
