Wacky Riichi variants y'all enjoy? More than Sanma, Aotenjo, Yami Mahjong, Washizu... Bonus if you can play it with a standard play set

Im new and i've been trying to win the mahjong cups at Like a Dragon. I had this hand with a triplet and a pair but i don't know why i didn't win since my oponent dropped that last tile for my hand.

What im doing wrong?

I’ve made quite a few browser-based board game sites, but this was easily the most complicated one so far.

My wife loves Riichi Mahjong, so I spent the last few weeks diving deep into the game while building this, constantly asking her questions and learning everything from chi, pon, and kan to yaku, furiten, dora, and scoring.

I tried to keep the interface simple: open the site and start playing immediately, either against the AI or with friends in a private room.

I’ve tested the rules as carefully as I can, but Riichi has a ridiculous number of edge cases. I’d really appreciate feedback from experienced players, especially if you spot any rule, scoring, or UI issues.

I have the two han minimum rule on, as you can see on the second photo but he still won some how? It was godly kazuya he's sitting east and I believe the wind indicator was still east. Sorry if I got any of the terminology wrong I just started learning two days ago.

The Dora is 6 bamboo but he didn't have any because I had them all (I was going to score so many points 😭)

For the last few months I’ve been focused on building RiichiCam, a free web app (works on any device) that makes scoring hands much easier and faster than using a scoring sheet, especially for players that are newer to playing over the board. You take a photo of your winning hand and the app gives you a full yaku, fu, and payments breakdown.

My first attempt at the vision model only used open-source tile images, plus a couple hundred of my own to fill in the gaps. Its accuracy was spotty at best, and it could really only support one tileset. After deciding to add more variety by rendering thousands of synthetic images for model training, accuracy improved to practically perfect in real-world conditions under a variety of tileset styles. I’ve had a few local clubs test it out and have heard great things.

Moving model inference to on-device instead of routing through a server also cut the time from taking a picture to being able to score the hand down to about 200 milliseconds, which I’m super stoked about.

Would love to hear any suggestions you guys might have to make the app more convenient to use! The scanning feature is the most complex part of the app so I want to make sure it’s easy to understand and fast.

I play a lot of riichi mahjong and I have an amos prime gear set and a ymi set. Both of which I am happy with.

As with most Japanese sets, these tiles are rather small. Recently ive been thinking about getting into a chinese mahjong variant and I constantly see videos and images of people in China playing with these massive sets and I really want to have at least one set like that.

Ive read that in China they use sets in sizes 42mm+ up to even 50mm and more supposedly.

The problem is I cant seem to find any tile sets online like this. Not even on second hand sites like ebay and Facebook marketplace.

The main things im looking for:

Size 40mm+ the larger, the better

No numbers in the corner

Classic symbols, nothing weird

Able to play Chinese variants like Hong Kong style

No single piece all white sets, I want a set with colored backs.

I live in the US near chicago. Do you think they would have sets like this if I went to a store in Chinatown?

Does anyone know of any reputable online stores where I could get a big set like this?

I feel like if they are so common in China there must be some way of getting my hands on it, but amazon and similar sites are plagued with american mahjong sets that I am not interested in.

These tiles are HUGE and I’d love a set of them, found them on marketplace (they sold) and the seller on marketplace said they found them at store that’s like one of those Amazon liquidation centers.

My son is 9, and loves all sorts of board and card games. We have been playing a super basic 2 player version on the phone (I think it's called push, or fingertip, or chasing the tortoise) it's nothing like the actual game, but it's akin to my favorite card game - trash.

Since he's a bit older and enjoys other tactical games, I think he'd like actual mahjong.

However, I've learned there are what feels like 6,000 types of games (it reminds me of Mexican train dominos and all the variants you can try)

So, I'm here to ask - Which type of mahjong is the easiest to learn? Which is the most fun to play?

I'd like to nail down that, before I look at tile sets (though it SEEMS an american set can be used for other types, whereas other sets cannot be used for american)

Who play with a wild/joker tile and you only can win from drawing a tile and your only allow pong and Kong only. After you pick up 6 tile for points. What is this rule call and do the have a app for it so I can practice playing

I'm looking to buy a table to play and I found a cheap one on target but I don't know if there would be an issue. For context I play riichi mahjong and already own a junkmat.

Was playing with my family, in the second seat and self picked the pair after my fourth kong. Im not exactly sure how rare this is, but im fairly sure I'm never getting this hand again even if I play for another 20 years

I know all of the rules and 95% of the yaku. And I know the absolute basics to tile efficiency like stop going for a triplet if you see 2 others on the board, and other minor stuff like that. To go for waits if you can. Dropping useless honor tiles. Gunning for Dora if I can. But very basic stuff, I also can't really tell what kind of hands my opponents have unless they do obvious stuff I.e. calling pon or chii on something with a terminal or a non seat or round wind triplet, off of that I can guess what they have going on but that's pretty obvious. As well as I can usually not feed a win if I'm not paying attention but again only from not ditching any honor tiles last minute or just discarding what has been recently discarded. I'm adept 2 in mahjong soul if that means anything lol

Hello all! I came across the Yellow Mountain Imports Riichi sets and just wanted to know/confirm people’s experiences with them.

For context, I do have other sets, primarily Chinese sets, however they don’t deliver exactly the balance I’m looking for. One is too heavy to carry around, the other is highly portable at the expense of being very light so walls and hands can break if not being careful

I was thinking of getting the black set but am concerned about visibility and/or beginner friendliness. Does the environment lighting heavily affect the tile’s visibility? There is a slight possibility I might use this set to teach some friends how to play and am wondering: is such a set a good enough starting point considering its nonstandard colors?

Also, on the product page, it says it weighs 5.5lbs/2.5kg. I just want to know if it actually weighs that much including the case and all its tiles and accessories inside.

All that being said, I personally prefer the black one for myself but don’t mind getting the white with yellow back set.

Hey so I went to a Riichi mahjong club in my area and I let them use my junk mat and when I got it back it had this stain on it, looks like a water stain. Is there anyway I can remove it?

I‘m talking about HK Mahjong here.

Following situation:

1. I have in my hand the following:
   2x red dragon, 3x bamboo 6, 1x bamboo 7.

In the discard pile is a bamboo 6.

Instead of calling a kong with 3+1x bamboo 6, I call a Pung for 2+1x bamboo 6. Leaving one bamboo 6 in my hand.

1. In my hand are now:
   2x red dragons, 1x bamboo 6, 1x bamboo 7.

Literally next round there is a red dragon in the discard pile.

I call a Pung for the red dragons -> declare a Kong with the remaining bamboo 6 -> pick a tile from the back of the wall and get a bamboo 7 -> Mahjong.

This was incredible lucky and my final Fan-count was 10.

But now I‘m not sure if this move was legal. So my question is, can you pick a Pung instead of a Kong, so that you can call a Kong later on with the tile that remained in your hand?

Will always prefer this to a auto table!

These tiles are part of a Chinese mahjong set. Are these meant to be replacement tiles in case you lose or damage any tiles? The set also came with four blank tiles so I am perplexed.

Google Translate said the characters mean “versatile” but I always take their translations with a huge grain of salt.

Over the past month my family and I have become obsessed with HKOS Mahjong. We even play with my Chinese tutor on webcam calls, lol. But already it drives us batty to build the walls after every game. Especially since we sometimes play three- or even two-handed. My tutor constantly reminds us that her friends all use automatic tables, lol. She prizes speed above all, lol. 快快快！

Also, visiting this sub, I’ve been astonished by how many of my fellow Americans also seem to enjoy Riichi. So now I’m thinking I’ll try learning that. If I like it, and I suspect I will, I’ll want a table that supports both Chinese and Riichi tiles. (I’ve also played American mahjong but don’t like it as much, so I can live without table support for that, though of course it would be nice.)

I’ve read here that Treyo tables support both styles. It seems one can order only directly from them, not via Amazon etc. Are those the best? Are there other good choices? Thanks in advance for any advice. (And if I am posting in the wrong subreddit, please forgive me and perhaps steer me in the right direction.)
