Wonder Egg is a lot like Madoka Magica, but Wonder Egg feels a lot more real to me. There are characters I relate to a lot more and I feel like I can understand their motivations and struggles so well. it really highlights a lot of the issues young people go through in society nowadays, as well as provides a very nuanced take on the "doomed magical girls" troupe. I wish I saw it talked about more often!

Made a Magical Girl Visual Novel from the Mascot's Perspective!

Hi! So, a couple years ago, I made a visual novel called Wake Up Magical Girl. It's about becoming the best Magical Girl ever in a dystopian world being aided by your very own emotionally-constipated magical familiar — for as long as you possibly can. It's very pink, lol

I recently updated it, and wanted to share it out for more to play!

  • It's about 30k words, so 2-3hrs depending on reading speed.
  • It has some stat-rising elements that affects the endings you get plus the battles that your player character faces
  • Absolutely adorable, original art from the sprites to the CGs to balance its dark themes
  • Magical Girl easter eggs sprinkled all around!

It is obviously inspired by Madoka, but I thought it would rather interesting to see what if things were played out from like Kyuubey's perspective. Like, what if he gave a shit while still being a piece of shit lol, knowing bad things were gonna happen but had a conscience. I also took inspiration from Needy Streamer Overdose for aesthetics and Takopi's Original Sin since that too focuses on a mascot-like character.

I don't consider my game as incredibly dark as my inspirations, tbh, but it still touches on dark themes just for your awareness! (Be sure to check out the content warning on the game page for more detail.)

It is completely free to play on PC, Mac, and even web browser. Though, I recommend the former two for better performance.

Hope you enjoy it!

In my honest opinion I still prefer the Diaspro from the Winx Club animated series version because the CGI reboot version of Diaspro's hairstyles and face are absolutely awful 😔 including her fairy form too.

Discussion What do you think of the concept of magical girls who grow into giantess to fight?

I'm brainstorming a novel idea as a personal passion project.

The premise is that whenever a villain or kaiju the size of a skyscraper appears, an ordinary girl transforms—through magic or advanced sci-fi technology—into a giant magical girl, much like an Ultraman-style tokusatsu hero, and battles to protect the city.

Her weapons are all transformed from real-world vehicles: a magical staff forged from a crane boom, a bow made from a stealth bomber, and a shield created from a ship, or nunchaku made of metro trains.

Her guide and mentor is an albatross that serves as her mascot companion. While she is in her ordinary human form, the albatross is naturally an enormous bird beside her. But once she transforms into a giant heroine, the same albatross looks relatively small(actually, that bird is completely same size)—small enough to perch comfortably on one of her shoulders as it offers guidance and advice throughout the battle.

The emotional core of the story revolves around the heroine herself. At school, she's shy, lonely, and largely ignored by her classmates. She believes that becoming the city's giant guardian will finally make people notice her. Instead, no one realizes that the giant heroine and the ordinary schoolgirl are the same person, and the rules forbid her from revealing her identity. Even after saving countless lives, she receives none of the recognition she had longed for.

To make matters worse, she accidentally causes collateral damage during a battle—for example, stumbling and collapsing a building she instinctively grabbed to steady herself. Horrified by the destruction her immense body can cause, she begins to fear that she's no better than the monsters she fights.

Over time, however, she comes to understand the value of anonymous heroism. Rather than seeing her colossal size and overwhelming strength as terrifying weapons, she learns to view them as symbols of the responsibility she bears to protect others.

I'm especially interested in the contrast at the heart of this concept: a magical girl who is as elegant and inspiring as Sailor Moon or Pretty Cure, yet is also a giant weighing thousands of tons and standing as tall as skyscrapers. Despite her incredible appearance, she is still an emotionally immature teenager who is frightened by the sheer scale of her own body and power.

How could I best emphasize this contrast throughout the story? Also, what kinds of gigantic weapons would be the most fitting for a heroine like this?

And the Magical Essence girlies are no exception. The design of these perfume bottles was inspired by the Ojamajo Doremi Cologne Tap and the PriTama GO from Kiratto PriChan.

And here's some commentary from Cedar.

Can anyone help me find a couple of magical girl games?

A long time ago, I remember seeing some posts on reddit or somewhere about a couple magical girl video games.

I don't remember much about either one though. All I remember about one game was that it involved living on a tiny planet raising bunnies for some reason.

The other game was more of a top-down action game. Some of the enemies were giant eyeballs with limbs or something like that?

Discussion Looking for readers on the part one of my Magical Girl story

This is the first part with 33k words of what I hope will be a four-part series. The story follows the protagonist, Monie, who discovers she is a dream sculptor and must confront nightmares crossing over from the real world into the dream world.

Please bear in mind that this was originally written in Spanish and translated into English; my English isn't 100% perfect, but I am sharing this version for now. I will contact a professional translator when the time comes.

Discussion My magical girl series is good but...

I've been jumping too quickly into the action, I think I need more time for my characters Josie, Fiona, Evie, Julie, and Stella to just be regular girls living their normal lives before jumping into the magical aspects. That way we actually care more about the world they're protecting. Some mundane stuff I have in mind are...

-Josie visiting her grandparents in the nursing home right before they're kidnapped.

-Josie, Fiona, Evie, and Stella speaking to a psychic which Julie is suspicious of.

-Josie, Fiona, Evie, Julie, and Stella spending a weekend at a gristmill converted into a family home.

Question A Questions on Evil To Good Power Ups & Downs

I was thinking about chibi usa and black lady stuff from sailor moon and something came to mind that I wanted to ask everyone here

How do you feel about hero main characters turning evil with dark power making them stronger but then when they're defeat and turned back they dont get some kind of hero version of the power they had when they were evil?

Something wondering why the dark power wasn't just unlocking stronger power a character could have if they dug deep down and make it their own and the dark power would just find those avenues of power much more easily than other. Like "this is something you COULD do eventually but not right now"

I was always surprised that isnt more of thing. What do you think?

Question Please help me find this manga

It was Japanese (or maybe chinese inspired that was popular back then) magical girl-ish theme. (Maybe it was miko but I'm not sure if i imagine that part myself)

The protagonist is girl with a twin. She jealous of her twin sister who quite popular because of her soft and kind personality, while she is the opposite. Then she met a boy (I think he's a seiryuu, there're another 3 like in the chinese mythology beasts) then she transforms into a miko.

Then something happened, I think her twin sister have a crush on seiryuu but he only interested in MC. Then her twin got jealous and seduced by the villian and became a dark miko. Then she (or someone) erased her own existence, or maybe it was a result of her karma.

Did some quick sketches of the magical forms of Lisa and Christine, Lavender Essence and Cedar Essence! I wanted to get a feel of what they would look like in non-chibi form. They're pretty simple, but I think they’re good for what they are.

Question How Come This MG Series Doesn't Get Hate Like Other Subversion?

Was remembering Magical Witch Punie-chan and the god tier opening. Its very much a magical girl subversion of its genre? And its it because it leans into black comedy and makes you laugh?

Like it never feels dark maybe?

Like how apocalypses and site does? Like Magical Witch Punie-chan doesn't hate its genre it instead makes it more brutal and funny.

Discussion Working on my own magical girl series!

Post image
10 Upvotes

So like the title says, I'm working on a magical girl series of my own called Sparkling Blade Silver Bane (or just Silver Bane for short). It's going to be an audio drama that I'm uploading onto YouTube. I'm planning for it to be kind of a more mature and sleeker take on a magical girl series without going full-on edgy like how certain series do, which goes along with the main theme of the project being that you’re never too old or burdened or anything to act like a child.

The basic plot is that by day, Shirogane Honomi is an ordinary girl who's dropped out of school and pushed her childhood aside to help run the family business after a life-changing death in her family. By night, Silver Bane is a magical girl who only saves the world so she can uncover the truth behind her seemingly-dead sister and lay her to rest. It doesn't help that her enemies are a werewolf who cares more about Silver Bane than she cares about him, a forest creature who looks suspiciously like Silver Bane's sister, and a tiny witch with a massive sweet tooth.

It's got a fairy tale motif (though that's mostly through the villains), which I think fits the theme well. Overall, the plot is very much standard magical girl fare, but in my eyes, it's the way I'm executing it that makes it special. There's a big twist that'll be revealed in the first episode that I don't want to spoil much, but I think it's pretty cool and will blow people's minds. The pic is an older screenshot of the pitch bible that I've been working on. I don't know when the series will come out, but I'm pretty proud of what I have so far, so I wanted to share what I've done. Let me know what you think of the idea!

Question Looking for some anime recommendations!

Hello eveyone! So, I'm a huge fan of the Magical Girls genre and I'm looking for some recommendations for what my next watch should be and what better place to ask that than this.

My favorite magical girls shows are: Madoka Magica (in my top 2 animes ever), Sailor Moon (all of it but S the most), Princess Tutu, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Magic Knight Rayearth (liked season 1 the best), Sakura.

Also watched and enjoyed: Corrector Yui, Tokyo Mew Mew, Shamanic Princess, some Magical DoReMi.

Other non-MG shows i love are: Evangelion, Pluto, Frieren, Digimon (Adventure and Tammers the most), Monster, Rurouni Kenshin, Samurai Champloo, Serial Experiments Lain.

I know of the Pretty Cure franchise but I find that it's a lot of ground to cover to even start to follow It. I don't know of I could or are there some seasons that would be better than others? Is it required to watch It all?

I enjoy a story that focus on character development the most and love me some hope among the darkness type of thing. Also, the music really gives it an extra something to the atmosphere.

TL,DR: Looking for a good magical girl story to watch.

Question What should my second magical girl series be?

I watched Madoka Magica and really liked it and want to give some other series in the genre a watch, so I've narrowed it down to:

Cardcaptor Sakura

Tokyo Mew Mew

Revolutionary Girl Utena (I don't know how much of a magical girl anime this is, but it popped up on a few lists and I've been meaning to watch it at some point anyway)

Sailor Moon (I'll admit, the series is so big I don't really know where to start so if that's your recommendation, then give me pointers there as well)

ETA: If you're going to comment something not on my list, please don't! I would've done a pole but I couldn't figure that out, so instead I'm trying to get a consensus between the 4 I listed :)

Magical Essence Monsters!

Meet the Mares, the Monsters of the Week in Magical Essence!

Mares are people who have contacted a mysterious illness - the first symptoms are an inability to sleep, accelerated heart rate, and terrible headaches. In about a week, the infected individual turns into a Mare. From there, they invade people's homes at night, sitting on their chests while they sleep and draining their energy. Those who are stressed are more likely to turn into Mares.

I was inspired by the mythological creatures of the same name, which you can read about here)! Thank you for supporting Magical Essence as it grows ans develops!
