Linear Algebra Preparation

Folks,

Before each semester, we often send out a message to students and faculty reminding them there are resources for acquiring the necessary background for linear algebra the course and/or its use in other classes.

Some of you may be thinking of taking Advanced Linear Algebra for Computing, ALA, (a course we developed and will be taught by another faculty member this spring) while others may need to refresh their linear algebra knowledge or plug holes. In particular, the SVD is important for other courses in the program.

Resources are available (for free) at http://ulaff.net. In particular, the pretest (see fourth column) may help you self-assess your knowledge and give you pointers to other resources. You can also preview ALA.

Perhaps those who have used these materials can advise their peers on how they fit into the picture. We would appreciate it if someone would also post this announcement on your Slack channel.

Although we don't teach this course ourselves any longer, we read course reviews and recently have been working with the program to address some concerns.

Best wishes,

Robert and Maggie

Interested in Robotics - Is this program worth it?

I'm a software engineer from a T5 school interested in switching from SWE at big tech to robotics startups. Is this program worth it or is my time better spent doing a Master's in Robotics?

There are some courses that are not part of any categories on the cdso.utexas.edu/mscs page. For example, which category does Distributed Systems fit in to?

Parallel Systems Difficulty

Hi y'all, planning on taking NLP in the fall this semester and was contemplating taking Parallel Systems as well. I've heard the workload is absolutely crazy, but that it's also incredibly rewarding. The other option I was thinking of was Distributed Computing, which seems to have only 5 hour workloads per week, but not sure overall. What would you recommend, and how was Parallel Systems for you? Is it worth the challenge?

MSCSO Fall 2026 admit from India - Will mid-August transcript arrival block registration?

Got into MSCSO Fall 2026! I’m based in India.

My college can only issue the final official transcript by July 15 and they don’t do e-delivery, so I’ll have to mail it.

With shipping + UT processing, it’ll probably reach Austin mid-August. Orientation is Aug 21, classes start Aug 24.

Anyone in MSCSO/CS Grad know if mid-August is still fine?

Question about prereqs + thesis track

Hi,

I’m interested in MSCSO but don’t meet the OS class prerequisite. Is taking a class through MIT OCW or Coursera/Udemy and mentioning that in my SOP good enough, or do I need to take the class from a community college? I have all other prereqs filled and got As in all of them. I also have a 3.8/4.0 undergrad GPA and 1yoe as a software engineer, so not sure if that will make up for the lack of prereq.

I’m also specifically interested in this program because it offers a thesis track for the online students. How difficult is it to secure an advisor and complete the track? I couldn’t find a lot of info about it online.

Thanks!

Which MSCSO courses usually release most/all content at the beginning of the semester?

Hi everyone! I’m planning my course schedule and trying to understand which UT Austin Online MSCS courses typically make most or all of the lectures/materials available at the beginning of the semester.
For anyone who has taken courses in the program: are there classes where the content is released all at once, or mostly front-loaded, so students can work ahead? I’m especially curious about courses like Parallel Systems, NLP, ML, Deep Learning, Optimization, Distributed Systems, etc.
Any insight on which courses are easier to front-load vs. which ones follow a strict weekly release schedule would be super helpful. Thanks!

I am looking to watch the videos of the courses for this program - old videos are also okay. Could we please consolidate here?

How attentive and organized are the professors?

I'm currently taking a prereqs online at my community college and am having difficulty with the professors....

Last semester, I had to reach out to a professor after - literally - every single quiz to let him know that the answer key was wrong (and I was losing points because of it).

This semester, another prof seems to have poor reading comprehension (or just...doesn't read emails thoroughly and misunderstands), so I'm on my own to figure things out when I have a question about the course. For example, my grades in the online homework were lower than my grades for the same assignments on Canvas. He said it was a common syncing issue and that he consolidates the scores at the end, but I panicked when I saw there were hw sections with no recorded responses. Eventually figured out that it's really because he's not assigning all the hw in our online textbook, so the textbook displays 70% but Canvas displays 100%...he didn't even respond to my last two emails about this.

I'm really worried about MS-level courses where the professors are similarly non-responsive, disorganized, and unfamiliar with the online platforms that they're using, especially when I'll be trying to get their attention enough to convince one to be my thesis advisor. Curious with what current students in the program are experiencing. TIA.

Math courses for ml/ai classes

Can anyone with prior experience help me understand what math courses are necessary for the ml ai route? I have not taken math courses for almost about 6 years. I took optimization my first semester this spring and dropped it immediately the third week, as I saw scary symbols and I also forgot everything about linear alzebra. I have managed to revise basic linear alzebra and theory automata the past 2 months, but I still need at least 2

semester to revise cal1, cal2, cal3 and differnetial equations. I am looking to take a course fall 2026 with the least math intensive ml/ai offering, especially the ones I need to revise. Hence looking for suggestions for courses that dont require any/least calculus and dfq. Thanks.

Austin-based MSCSO/CDSO students?

Hello everyone,

I was recently accepted into the MSCSO program after completing my B.S. in Computer Science at Oregon State University, and I’m wondering if there is a local Austin community for MSCSO/CDSO students.

I’m considering a relocation to Austin and living near campus, possibly in college co-op housing. I wanted to make a friendly post to connect with other students who may be doing something similar or are already based in Austin.

I’m hoping to get involved where I can, meet other students, study/network in person, and make the most of the UT community while completing the program.

Is anyone else living in Austin or considering a similar plan?

Hey y'all, hope you are doing well.

In your experience, approximately how many days does it take to approve our Transcripts after the mail reaches UT?

When do new students get there UT EID Email

About a month ago, I received an email saying I would be getting my UT EID information, but I haven't received anything yet. I've noticed that some students are already registering for classes, so I'm starting to get a little concerned that something may have fallen through the cracks.

For those who recently enrolled, how long did it take for you to receive your UT EID and registration information?
