The first instalment in this series considered Term 1, 2 and ended with the result of the second general election. Where the tories were the largest party, but the Liberals had more choices of coalition partners.

Term 3:

The Liberals opted against returning to coalition with the Conservatives, instead doing a deal with the Green Party that gave the Greens a historic first taste of Government.

Under new leadership of SirIceman, the major issue for the Conservatives was opposing the new coalition. Focusing on campaigning against the tax policies of the new government, the Conservatives continue to fail to make progress, falling below the Liberals in the polls by the halfway mark of the term. This is attributable to the sheer volume of transformative legislation introduced by the coalition.

The majority spearheaded by the active Prime Minister Seph, including voting reform, the expansion of non traditional education pathways, a "bold" High Speed Rail program and savings to welfare. While the Greens secured a Conversion therapy ban and energy reforms.

However, cracks within the governing coalition would throw the government into chaos. Other perspectives place Green Party disquiet over Liberal plans to fund their major legislative program on massive welfare cuts (1/3 of the total welfare bill!!?) as a contributing factor.

It is unclear what precipitated the collapse; the Greens would allege poor treatment later, but at the time called the split amicable. But it is hard to say even now, at the time Green Party MPs appeared to have different positions and public positions changed by the day.

The Green Party cycled rapidly through leaders, eventually voting in favour of a no-confidence motion pushed by the leader of the opposition SirIceman.

After a fractious debate, the motion passed, and a Grand Coalition would see 1 Labour MP and 5 Tory MPs form a coalition that required Green Party votes to survive.

Even after the loss of government, the Liberal Party remained popular, remaining the largest party in the poll conducted after the VoNC carried.

Liberal Democrats: 41.3% (+2.9%)

Conservative Party: 36.5% (+3.5%)

Labour Party: 8.0% (+1.0%)

Green Party: 7.6% (-6.5%)

Reform UK: 4.8% (-0.1%)

Independents: 1.7% (-0.9%)

Labour Leader Inside_Analysis played all sides during coalition talks, eventually walking away with the Foreign Office in a deal with the Tories.

The Green support for this coalition would immediately be tested when President Trump ordered a "Special Military Operation" to seize Nicolas Maduro. The government survived with a pragmatic, if tepid and obfuscated, response.

There was little time for an equally bold legislative program, but the end of the term did see the introduction of Labour's Antisemitism bill, and a Leasehold reform bill from the coalition. Neither of which would pass before the end of the term.

The government would manage, with great care, to pass a budget that funded some minor Green Party priorities, funded mostly off the back of fuel duty rises and an end to the double lock on pensions.

After the Budget's passage, the Prime Minister SirIceman rode the success and called an election sooner rather than later. A strong Tory campaign caught the opposition and other parties off guard, with the result being a majority for the first time since 2024, albeit a narrow one.

The Conservatives chose to govern alone, with the Liberals in opposition and the Labour party remaining on one seat, now returning to the opposition benches.

Term 4

The Conservative legislative program was much thinner than the previous Liberal dominated government, focused on a couple of key bills: the Immigration Act 2026, the Emergency Energy Act 2026, which saw a return to oil and gas drilling, and a Home Heating (Regulation) Act the latter two in response to the Iran crisis.

Another major achievement of the government was a Defence Statement setting out how the multi-billion pounds of funding secured in successive budgets would be spent.

The Tories, free to govern without coalition partners, was accused of disrespect for parliament, not helped by prominent members' proclivity for Kebab nights and poor attendance in the House of Commons.

Nevertheless, the Conservatives would put together a budget that would see Britain enter a surplus for the first time since 2001. This was largley off the back of significant cuts, taxes and changes to pensions both private and public as well as implementing partially major Liberal Party welfare saving measures on Universal Credit elidgibility.

Following the budget's passage, the three-time Chancellor LeChevalierMal-Fait would announce a break from frontline politics and not contest his Northern England seat at the upcoming General Election.

DEFRA SoS Flat_Architect the MP for Southern England, beat out MonFreebo and North of England MP Oracle_of_Mercia in a competitive Tory field to lead the party. The North of England MP campaign was marred by chaos and confusion - initially opting not to run, being locked out of the CCHQ hustings during nominations, but still managing to place a respectable 2nd.

Over the term, British politics largley returned to a Lab-Tory two party system with the Lib Dems as the biggest third party;

GEIV

Conservative attempts to hold on to thier majority were complicated by losses for the conservative party to a resurgent Labour Party across "labour heartlands" in Scotland, Wales and a closely fought campaign in Northern England.

This was compensated by Conservative gains in London, under their new one nation Leader Flat_Architect. Leading to a net loss of 1 seat, but falling narrowly short of a majority.

Elsewhere, Labour replaced the Liberals as the largest opposition party winning 5 seats, and the Liberals slumping to 2. The final seat of the parliament was won by independent anti-NATO candidate Zakanian, winning a list seat in Scotland.

This no doubt complicates coalition forming but promises at least for term 5 to be eventful!

At a small, private drinks reception with advisors and staff at HMT, LeChevalier-MalFait thanked them for service over the years remarking that the country was in a better year now than when he arrived. He paid tribute to the Prime Minister SirIceman for his service to the country saying without the majority delivered by you much of the hard choices we made would not have been possible.

The event goes little noticed by the media with the press moving on to the election and away from "yesterdays men".

The next day moving vans help clear out number 11, but the chancellor does not follow them to his northern residence. Instead he is bound for Heathrow and deepest darkest Africa.

A statement from the former leader of the Green Party of England and Wales

“When I stepped into the role as Green leader a few months ago, it was somewhat reluctantly. I am someone who admittedly probably erred on the centre-left, rather than the harder left, whose politics were largely grounded in realistic solutions to benefit the day-to-day, rather than rooted in the idealism of a tomorrow that will never come.”

“I believe this was mirrored in the policies I advocated for, and the oppositional fortitude I displayed for spells.”

“However, in the latter days of my time in the Greens, it became apparent that I was not able to steer the vision of the party in the way that members up and down the country would like me to. Rightly or wrongly, the spirit of Green politics is deep rooted in a more radical spirit which I personally felt was ill-suited to a time where people need simpler solutions to everyday problems to make their lives easier.”

“That is why a number of weeks ago, I signalled my intent to join the Labour Party. I feel that Labour in how it has typically governed mirrors my own psyche and position on the world far more closely. It hasn’t led through dogma, it’s looked at issues ordinary people faced and tried to respond to them in an understandable way to actually create change, rather than simply agitate for it.”

Westminster is a place of familiar motions - the party leader who can command a majority in the house, commands the government. At least, that’s what almost always happens - except when it doesn’t. 

Our sitting prime minister today as his party completes its selection of a new leader leaves Iceman to join an exclusive trinity of prime ministers who share the experience of a single anomaly that breaks the political norms of parliament. That anomaly? Each has held the highest political office in our country but not the highest office in their party. 

They are prime ministers but not party leaders. 

David Lloyd George

Herbert Henry Asquith led a coalition government between liberals, labour and the conservatives in 1915, in the backdrop of the First World War. Asquith was both leader of the liberal party and prime minister. Coalition confidence in Asquith soon diminished and he was forced to resign from leading the government, and was replaced by his Chancellor David Lloyd George. The anomaly was that Asquith whilst resigning from leading government, did not resign from leading the party. David Lloyd George would be prime minister without being party leader.

Winston Churchill

Between 1937–1940 Neville Chamberlain was prime minister. Clement Attlee, leader of the labour party was prepared to form a coalition government but in light of Chamberlain's failed policy of appeasement refused to allow Chamberlain to lead that government. One Conservative had the authority and respect across potential coalition partners, and particular Attlee to replace Chamberlain as prime minister - Winston Churchill. This begins the anomaly, because whilst Chamberlain resigned from leading the government in May 1940, he remained party leader until October of that same year when he resigned due to poor health. Winston Churchill would become party leader, but for five months the anomaly of a Prime Minister but not party leader would remain. 

Iceman 

In 2026, for ten days, Prime Minister Iceman joins this select group of occupants of Number 10 who are head of government, but not head of party. Distinct from both Lloyd George and Churchill whom both found in this situation because of the complexity of coalition politics, but for the sitting prime minister because of a profound sense of custodianship as the nation approaches GEIIII and as he keeps his promise to the British people to have have fulfilled his responsibilities until his hard won mandate from GEIII expires. 

In ten days the anomaly will have passed, the prime minister's premiership will have come to a close, the mandate with which he was elected to highest office will have expired. We might never witness an anomaly like this again in our lifetime - but for now, Iceman is in good company amongst his prime ministerial peers David Lloyd George and Winston Churchill.

Good morning, as I am sure you will all know by know that the Conservative and Unionist Party has been holding a leadership election following my recent decision to depart. We've had a very positive and strong leadership election campaign with three eager and capable candidates being courageous and putting themselves forward to the membership to become the new Leader. The leadership election has been very positive with a strong number questions being asked of the candidates, great responses to those questions by the candidates, and a very good voting turnout in the election. The candidates Oracle, Flat Artifact, and MonFreebo all did a fantastic job putting themselves forward for consideration, being active throughout the campaign, and setting out a vision for the Conservative Party that they want to lead. I am happy to announce that following the counting of all votes cast in the leadership election, Flat_Artifact has won the election and has been voted by the Conservative membership to become the new Leader of the Party.

I extend my congratulations to Flat_Artifact on his win to succeed me as the Conservative Party Leader, I know he is determined capable of fulfilling the role as he has done as one of my cabinet ministers in this last term. I send my commiserations to Oracle and MonFreebo who are unlucky in this leadership election but I am sure they will both be key members of the party going forward into the upcoming general election and parliamentary term. As was outlined prior to the leadership election and supported by Flat_Artifact, I will remain as Prime Minister for the remaining time we have left in this term before the election so Flat can focus on election preparation. I will conclude by reiterating my thanks to the British public who have voted for and supported us alongside the Conservative Party for the continued work to best serve the public and improve our nation in government. I am supporting Flat_Artifact to continue our work and lead our nation to an even brighter future and I encourage you all to do the same, thank you.

This morning the Conservative Party is waking up to news of a new leader. We’ve yet to hear who has won that ballot of party members but an announcement is expected this afternoon.

What we do know is that this morning at Stansted Airport the Foreign Secretary and candidate for the leadership Oracle has flown to Mexico. His office confirmed he was going in support of the England world cup team. It would be highly unusual for him to be declared the next Tory Leader whilst out of the country, but stranger things in British politics have happened.

Downing Street has been quiet this morning, but the growing expectation across Westminster is that Flat Artifact, the secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, will soon be declared the next leader of the Conservative Party.

Flat Artifact was seen leaving his home this morning and looked confident of a win.

British tourists were left aghast after reports early this morning on X emerged that the Foreign Secretary Oracle was spotted around the vicinity of Aztecca Stadium ahead of Mexico Vs England in the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup.

Witnesses claim to have spotted the Foreign Secretary enjoying the local cuisine and allegedly being heard saying “I wonder if Prince William eats Taco’s ?”

The Mexican government declined to comment on whether any official meetings had taken place.

England fans on X began joking that “at least we can claim diplomatic immunity if we decide to riot if we lose”.

Sources close to the foreign secretary also denied that he has been sent to Mexico to negotiate extra time should England fail to score for 90 minutes following concerns from the last two matches in the tournament.

Today saw the next step in the election to become the new Leader of the MHOP Conservative Party with three candidates being on the ballot for members to vote on. All three of the candidates who have made it to the voting stage of the election all have a decent pedigree in MHOP and provide an interesting choice for the future of the Conservatives and MHOP if they get elected. They are all aiming to succeed Iceman, arguably the best Prime Minister and Conservative Leader in all of MHOP history. Having led the party from several points behind in the polls and in opposition to becoming Prime Minister in December 2025 and winning MHOP's first and only majority government. This is an addition to leading the to consistently polling in the high 40's and even highting the 50% mark an unheard of event modern politics and being the longest tenured Conservative Party Leader and Prime Minister in MHOP history.

So who are these candidates well here's a brief bit about each candidate hoping to succeed Iceman and become the next Leader of the MHOP Conservative and Unionist Party.

First, we have Flat_Artifact, a long standing and experienced member of the Conservative Party who is served in a number of important roles. He is the current Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs leading on related policy and a Member of Parliament, with prior experience as a Peer and serving as the Leader of the House of Lords in the former coalition government. He will be hoping that his experience and wisdom will win the support and votes of the Conservative Party membership.

Secondly, we have Oracle_of_Mercia, a relatively newer member of the MHOP Conservative Party albeit one with a past within the MHOP universe. He has previous experience within the realms of MHOP alongside his recent stint as the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development and Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government. Oracle will be hoping that his recent noticeable efforts within the party will resonate with the members and secure him the leadership position.

Finally, we have MonFreebo4936, now compared to the other two candidates he is the least known one, however he is still just as eager and just as strong of an underdog capable of an upset. Since joining the Conservatives around the last election where the Conservatives won a majority, he entered the House of Commons and has been a committed backbench MP. In this leadership election, MonFreebo will be hoping that the Conservative Party membership is willing to take a chance on the underdog to lead the party into the upcoming term.

So there we have it, the three candidates vying to succeed in this Conservative and Unionist Party election to become the new Leader and shape its future into the upcoming term. In a few days once voting has closed, we will see who is victorious in the election and take on the baton from the great Leader and Prime Minister Iceman, until then, optimus vir vincat.

General Feedback: Turnout throughout this pre-election period was somewhat revived among the three major parties. We saw press and debate comments from all three parties, especially the Labour Party, and two Bills from the Conservatives including the budget. All of this combined means that polling was somewhat stable and there were no dramatic shifts, with the most notable changes being Reform being dropped to 0% after a sustained period of invisibility, and the greens beginning to head the same way.

Conservative Party: Some solid debating this period in terms of numbers - you had the most members out debating - however the content of your comments perhaps needs looking at and a unified strategy put together; just turning up isn’t enough, and in some instances what was said and certain scandals including kebabgate actually damaged your party’s credibility. The major saving grace for you this term was the budget which had a considerable impact on your party’s credibility leading to a slight gain this period.

Labour Party: While you had some cracking comments this cycle and some great press pieces - both of which mean that you still rose in polling the most this cycle - the fact that you had fewer members out debating this cycle than last cycle hindered you greatly. Additionally, with no legislation being produced by the Labour Party, the public do question if you are ready for governing the nation.

Liberal Democrats: After quite a sustained period of inaction as the official opposition, this period saw your new Leader Meneerduif single-handedly take the party back out of the negative - with their hard work making them one of the most notable commenters of all parties this period certainly in terms of quality. The press also helped you guys gain back some credibility. However one person doesn’t make a party, and to return to previous heights you must work more as a team. All is not lost!

Green Party: Sadly the Greens were not present again in this cycle, not much more I can say here - unless someone picks up the mantle and gets back out there you will soon face the same fate as Reform!

Reform UK: Your party has ceased to be seen by the public as a credible option as you are wholly inactive - perhaps it is time for a change?

Independents: One Indy was actually quite present in some debates this cycle and as a result there has been a rise in Indy polling!!

That is all until the GE - good luck everyone, this can all change depending on the campaign!

Chris Mason of the BBC, at a popular 2026 venue for launching political coups and leadership campaigns.

“If you are just joining me, moments ago Flat Artifact, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, finished a speech in which he declared his intention to run for the leadership of the Conservative Party.

This was relatively low key as launch events for leadership elections go - no senior party members, and stripped down fanfare that has in recent years become the norm with an abundance of leadership campaigns.

Those supporting the Secretary of State are calling for the party to go Forwards with Flat.

Unsurprisingly the minister heaped praise on the soon to be former Prime Minister. He declared Iceman to be the most consequential Prime Minister and party leader of his generation. Flat went on in a calculated way to position himself as the natural successor by binding together the forward momentum of the leadership candidate’s vision for the party with the legacy and groundwork already set by the prime minister.

The speech was light on policy, as is often the case with these speeches but the minister spoke of his desire to make a difference to working people across the country under pressure from inflation and particularly increasing energy bills. He said that he would put rocket boosters on the outgoing Prime Minister's groundwork for a stronger nation.

He was honest with the party that the first tests of new leadership would come quickly - GEIIII of course looms large over this contest, and a new leader will have limited time before they are tested with the electorate. He was confident that this was a helpful thing, and promised to secure his party a mandate to move forwards together.

It’s clear the secretary of state wants to replace his boss. He’s thrown his hat into the conservative leadership election. It’s now up to the members whether they believe Flat Artifact, or someone else, is their best bet for GEIIII.”

As nominations opened in the Conservative leadership election, lobby journalists caught the irate foreign secretary locked out of the nominations room, before he was eventually let in by a lowly intern.

Mr Oracle, standing outside CCHQ following a meeting on the nomination opening and an explanation of the process timetable, is approached by journalists.

As he stepped out onto the pavement, waiting journalists gathered around him.

A reporter shouts “Mr Oracle, why are you here at the meeting, if you’ve allready said you’re not running to be leader ?”

Oracle pauses before replying “yes, after a great deal of thought, and following conversations with my fellow colleagues in the parliamentary party, whose judgement I respect, I have decided to put my name forward for the leadership of the Conservative Party, when the prime minister stepped down, I genuinely believed my role was to continue supporting the government and focus on policy and help us focus on winning the upcoming general election, I had also hoped my preferred candidate would stand, however, having learned they will not be seeking the leadership I believe that circumstances have now changed”.

Mr Oracle also added ”Members deserve a genuine choice and after carefully reflecting on what my colleagues have said to me, I am reluctantly offering my services to lead the party”

Another reporter asks “Mr Oracle, was it a mistake to rule yourself out so early ?”

In response Mr Oracle simply smiled and said “No it reflected how I felt at the time, and as you all know politics in Westminster moves very quickly, and everyone with talent in the party should be willing to reassess once they have all the facts at there disposal, and as you know in British politics, There’s always a twist at the end”.

Chris: “Despite the Prime Minister's incredible announcement this week that he intends not to lead his party into the next general election, the business of government continues as senior members of his cabinet, and political giants of his party gather for their weekly meeting with the soon to be former Prime Minister.”

“We’ve had a number of ministers arriving, with the Foreign Secretary himself Oracle already ruling out his intentions to stand in the upcoming leadership election…

A ministerial car pulls up inside the security gates of Downing Street.

Chris: “Wait. Another ministerial car has just entered Downing Street, let’s wait to find out who this is. I can see… yes… it’s the Secretary of State Flat Artifact…”

Flat Artifact gets out of the ministerial car, his red folder in hand, walking towards the famous black door of No 10.

Chris: “Flat Artifact. How do you feel about the departure of the Prime Minister? Will you throw your hat in the ring to become the next leader?”

Flat Artifact deliberately looked towards the reporters and slowed the pace of his walk, speaking loudly to Chris Mason.

FA: “This Prime Minister has been one of the great custodians of both party and country. We in the Conservatives have a responsibility to continue building on that legacy.

Chris: “Who will be the next leader? Will it be you?”

FA: “That’s for the party members to decide, and I’m not rushing into a decision. If you’ll excuse me I’m needed inside, have a good morning.”

Flat Artifact walked away from the press line and into 10 Downing Street.

Chris: “That was the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs unwilling to rule out a bid to be the next leader of the Conservative Party."

A Bin for Britain?

What began as a novelty candidacy has rapidly evolved into something far more concerning for Conservative Party officials.

Count Binface, the satirical politician best known for his eccentric promises and appearances at major elections, has seen an unexpected surge in public popularity amidst growing dissatisfaction with the political establishment.

Recent opinion polls suggest that the Count enjoys favourability ratings exceeding several senior Conservative figures. While few observers seriously believe he intends to seek the party leadership, persistent rumours circulating in Westminster and across social media have fuelled speculation that an outsider bid may not be entirely impossible.

Party grandees have dismissed the idea as absurd, yet some grassroots members argue that a candidate capable of attracting widespread public attention could help revive the Conservatives' fortunes.

Others warn that even entertaining such speculation risks further undermining the party's credibility.

For now, Count Binface has refused to rule anything out, stating only that he is "focused on delivering better bins and fewer scandals."

Whether this represents a fleeting protest movement or the beginning of a genuine political phenomenon remains to be seen.

Good morning, we are hearing reports from Downing Street that Prime Minister Iceman is expected to make an announcement of some kind here in front of Downing Street at some point this morning. There is some speculation on what the content of that announcement will be; it is not set in stone yet what this announcement will be about in particular. Some speculation suggests that it could be an election announcement but currently we don’t know what it will be. It is expected to be an important announcement but we… Okay, the Prime Minister is coming out of Downing Street to the lectern we will cut to his announcement.

Good morning everyone, I am today announcing that I will be standing down as the Leader of the MHOP Conservative and Unionist Party at the end of this parliamentary term. I have been fortunate to lead the Conservative Party through its most successful time in MHOP history since I took over the leadership in October of last year succeeding my predecessor Yorkie. I am grateful to the party and the nation for firstly electing me to the role of party leader and subsequently electing the Conservative Party to lead the nation’s first MHOP majority government.

During my leadership of the party, we have grown from strength to strength from being in opposition to a Liberal Democrat-Green coalition, to forming a coalition of our own, to forming a majority government following the third MHOP election. We have grown as a party in active membership gaining several members who have shown up, the only party to field a full slate of candidates in the last election and maintaining the highest average party voting turnout. We have been ever present within parliament throughout this term voting in divisions to represent our constituents, producing the largest number of bills to improve our nation’s laws, and our ministers turning up to answer questions. We have put forward legislation to end the early release of dangerous criminals to help maintain law and order and keep our streets and people safe. We have increased support and protections for our nation’s farmers to promote land protection, and tackle fly-tipping. Alongside commitments to upgrading our nation’s armed forces with the joint European training exercises that we held and the defence statement which introduces the largest investment into our armed forces in more than half a century. We have also stepped up our nation’s immigration system to tackle the backlog of asylum claims, deal with human trafficking occurring with the channel crossings and protect our nation’s borders. Furthermore, we have put forward legislation to improve the safety of new innovative technologies such as lithium-ion batteries to ensure that technological advancements can be made with public safety in mind. And at the end of the term we have put forward legislation that will support investment, development, and growth in our nation’s high streets to support business growth and shopping opportunities for people within their local communities. Alongside the development of the second budget of my tenure led by our Chancellor that will further support the development of a stable and productive economy, improved economic opportunities for people, and better growth for British businesses. We have additionally maintained the highest polling averages in modern British political history, and in several polls achieved more than 50% of polling share. This is a highlight of the progress the party has made under my leadership from being several points behind the Liberal Democrats to being several points ahead of our nearest competitors. It has also been an honour to not just be the longest serving leader of the MHOP Conservative and Unionist Party but also become the longest serving Prime Minister in MHOP history.

I will be looking forward to the upcoming Conservative and Unionist Party leadership election in which my successor will be elected. I encourage all party members who are capable of leading the party and enthusiastic to take our nation forward to throw their hat in the ring to lead the nation’s largest political party. We have built a strong and consistent level of success under my leadership and the last and current terms which we are most certainly capable of continuing in the upcoming election and into the future. So I will end this speech by thanking the party members who have supported myself and the party to achieve the great success we have experienced. But also the British public who supported us in our coalition, in the last MHOP election giving us a majority and continuing to support us and growing their support of this term. I will stay on as the Leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party until my successor is elected and as Prime Minister until the end of the term. I thank you for giving me the honour of serving you as Prime Minister and hope you will support my successor in leading the Conservatives so that together we can continue the work to make our nation stronger, more prosperous, and better than ever before, thank you.

(Meta: I am stepping down as the leader due to my real life responsibilities' and commitments increasing which are important for me and my future and must take priority. It's been a pleasure being a leader of one of MHOP's biggest parties for so long and leading a majority government but I don't have the time as stuff is becoming more important that needs my attention and I think the end of this term is a reasonable time to bow out. I want to thank Chev and Syd for supporting me in leading the party for so long, the party members for making the party as successful as it has been, and everyone else for keeping the game running).

Today, following the announcement from the Prime Minister that he will be stepping down as Leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party at the end of the parliamentary term, I wanted to express my personally gratitude for the trust he has placed in me.

When I was invited to serve in the cabinet as Foreign Secretary and Secretary of State for Devolved Nations and Local Government, it was an opportunity that very few parliamentarians receive.

Throughout the term I have been focused on representing Britain abroad and rebuilding trust with the commonwealth, and supporting the Prime Minister with his formalisation of CANZUK, which will go down as one of his many legacies.

Under Iceman’s leadership our party and our country has gone from strength to strength and our party has gone from high polling to delivering the first MHOP Majority government.

With the leadership election now approaching, I can confirm that I will not be seeking the leadership of the Conservative and Unionist Party.

Whilst I’m deeply honoured to have served in the cabinet, I believe my focus should remain where it has always been which is developing policy, passing legislation and helping our party succeed in the upcoming general election.

Politics is not simply about titles, or positions, but about institutions and making sure they can serve our communities through practical solutions that people can see and benefit from.

Prime ministers may change, but the mission remains the same, to build a stronger, more prosperous United Kingdom.

I thank Iceman for his service and for the very best for the future and for the opportunities he has given me to serve our country.

Ten years after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union, Liberal Democrat leader Meneerduif travelled to Dover to deliver a speech on the economic and political consequences of Brexit.
Speaking at the Port of Dover, Britain’s principal gateway to continental Europe, Meneerduif argued that Brexit had failed to deliver on its promises and called for Britain to begin rebuilding its relationship with Europe.

The Liberal Democrat leader said:
“Ten years ago today, the British people voted to leave the European Union.
Many who voted Leave did so in good faith. They were promised stronger economic growth, fewer barriers to trade, greater prosperity and a more influential Britain on the world stage.
Today, ten years later, we have a responsibility to honestly assess the results.

Standing here in Dover, Britain’s gateway to Europe, we are reminded of a simple reality: geography cannot be changed. Our closest neighbours remain our closest trading partners. Our prosperity remains closely linked to theirs.

Over the last decade, British businesses have faced new barriers when trading with Europe. Exporters have been burdened with additional bureaucracy. Investment has lagged behind many comparable economies. Opportunities that once existed for young people to study, work and live across Europe have become more limited.

At the same time, Britain has lost influence. We remain an important nation, but too often decisions affecting our continent are now taken without a British voice at the table.

The lesson of the last decade is clear. Brexit has not delivered what its supporters promised.
Recognising that reality is not about refighting old arguments. It is about learning from experience. It is about having the confidence to acknowledge when something has not worked and the courage to pursue a better path.

Britain’s future does not lie in isolation. It lies in cooperation with our friends and allies across Europe. It lies in reducing unnecessary barriers to trade, strengthening our shared security and rebuilding the relationships that have been damaged over the past decade.

Rejoining the European Union will not happen tomorrow, and no serious politician should pretend otherwise. But if we are serious about economic growth, national security, opportunity for young people and restoring Britain’s influence in the world, then we must begin the journey back.

Brexit has had ten years to prove itself.
It has failed. It is time to begin the journey back.”

Following the speech, Meneerduif met with local business owners and representatives from the port to discuss the long-term impact of Brexit on trade, investment and economic growth.

The tradition of Christian Socialism is alive and strong in the Labour Party. The belief that we are called to serve our fellow man, not when they are seen to deserve it, but when they really need it. Christ speaks clearly, commanding us that we should “Love thy neighbour as thyself”, and throughout his ministry He calls us to stand against injustice wherever we see it. Indeed, he names this as one of two commandments that holds the entire Law and Prophets, equal only to love of God. Too often, I see many in this political climate try to use the teachings of Christianity not to uplift those around them, but to keep them down. 

In the modern day, the teachings of Christian Socialism are all too important. In this age of greed and division, we need to remember the teachings of the Lord. He did not stand with the powerful or those with influence, but with the marginalised; not those at the top of society, but those forgotten by it. In the Gospel of St. Luke, the Lord said to his disciples: “Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the Kingdom of God. Blessed are you who hunger, for you will be satisfied.” Throughout His teachings, he stands with the poor, the hungry, those who mourn or face persecution for righteousness. One does not see “Blessed are the rich” in the Beatitudes for a reason.
 
But how does this help us today, and how do we put this into practice in terms of policy? If we believe that everyone is made in God’s image, then our politics cannot be about how well the wealthy or the influential are served. We need a society that doesn’t measure success by the profits of the rich, but by how we care for the poor, the worker, the marginalised, the forgotten. A society is bankrupt when those who are in the most need of help reach out their hands and are slapped away. Too often, I see the rhetoric that those who are on benefits are nothing more than drains on society, or that the issues facing this country are the fault of immigrants. It is easy to assign blame to those you distrust; it is significantly harder to stand with those same people and build a society we can all be proud of.

As Christians, and particularly Christian Socialists, we are not called to this duty merely for those in our immediate community, but for the world. The teacher may answer this call in their classrooms, or the priest in their parishes. But we Parliamentarians are entrusted with something all too important. We have the power, and therefore the duty, to reform the very institutions that govern our society to better serve the common good.

This is not an abstract responsibility. It confronts us every day in the troubles our country faces, and the lives most affected by them. Today in our country, we face a housing crisis. For millions, the dream of owning their own home is drifting further out of reach. Extortionate prices and predatory renting practices leave so many families uncertain about whether they have a secure roof over their heads. In London, more than 300,000 families are on waiting lists for social housing due to rising rents. Home ownership, once a reasonable expectation, is in a steady decline. All the while, housebuilding targets consistently fall short of what is needed. How can we continue to allow this?

We must put our call into practice. We must recognise that a home is not merely a source of income, or an asset to be traded or abandoned on the basis of its monetary worth. It is the foundation of our communities, our family life, and the dignity we must hold for all people. It is where children come home to play after school, and where the most honest versions of ourselves live. If we truly believe this, we cannot be content with half-measures. Any new home being built must meet the highest standard of safety, quality, and dignity, and renters must be granted real protections against predatory landlords. We must build the homes our citizens so desperately need. For our housing system to work, we have to put people before profit, always. In our country where so many struggle to put a roof over their heads, we must remember a basic moral teaching: No one has the right to a second home until everyone has a first home. 

When we discuss issues of welfare, too often it is through the lens of treating benefits claimants with suspicion. We have to challenge the doctrine that those on benefits are just lazy, or work shy. The reality is far different. Across this country, we have citizens who have spent months applying for jobs in vain, only to be told they should be looking harder. We see people with disabilities that prevent them from working, people caring for loved ones, people who have fallen on such hardships through no fault of their own. 

Too often, they are treated with distrust, when we should be showing them compassion. Rather than asking whether they have earned our help, we should be asking whether we have fulfilled our duty to our neighbours. Instead of serving to further marginalise people, our welfare system must reflect our duty to them. The state should provide real help to the unemployed, the disabled, and those struggling to make ends meet. To that end, the role of Welfare Secretary has to be reinstated as a matter of priority. Unpaid carers, whose sacrifices too often go unrecognised, deserve far more support and compensation than they are currently given, and every level of government has to recognise it has a real duty of care to those who rely on them. The Welfare State is not judged on how many it can turn away, and how little it can provide. It is judged on how faithfully it responds to the cries of those in need.

This same principle applies to our healthcare system. We are called to love our neighbour, but so many remain indifferent while millions suffer due to lack of access to healthcare. Our politicians acknowledge the issues, but acknowledgment alone does not heal any patients, nor does it shorten waiting lists. It does nothing to alleviate suffering. We are well past the time for recognition; now is the time to act. For as long as I can remember, governments of every kind have acknowledged the strain facing our healthcare system, then continued in their neglect. Instead of being treated as a national institution, the NHS is treated as a service, a commodity to be purchased bit by bit at the market. It is not a commodity, but the strongest expression of society’s duty to the wellbeing of its citizens. The era of inaction has to end.

We need to stop viewing the NHS as a problem to be solved, and begin fixing the cracks we so clearly see in the system. The privatisation that has caused such harm has to end, and the Health and Social Care Act of 2012 must be repealed in full, returning a duty of care to the Secretary of State. The State must take meaningful action to lower waiting times so people can have the access to the help they need. Finally, we cannot forget the conditions under which doctors, nurses, and the entire family of the NHS are working. A real terms increase in pay must be given to NHS staff, and we need to review how we can improve their working conditions so that they can truly help their patients, not just do their best while battling burnout and fatigue. The nurse who just finished her ten hour shift deserves our gratitude, our respect, and a government that truly values her work. The NHS isn’t just a public body. It is a promise to each and every person that their illness will be treated not on the basis of means or how “deserving” you are, but by virtue of simply needing help. It is the guarantee to the scared pensioner going in for his assessment that whatever happens, he will not be alone. It helps us at the start of life, and is there for us at the end. Bevan called it “Our most Christian institution”, and to hold with Christian teachings is to ensure that promise is kept.

Ultimately, this is the strongest application of Christian values in our politics. Service rather than exclusion; love rather than distrust. Christian Socialism is not merely about policy or economic theories. It is not exercised by thinking “How can we make this institution more profitable?”, but by asking, “How can this institution best serve those in need?”. It is the belief that a society is judged by how it treats the poor, not by how it enriches the wealthy. It is the belief that every person, no matter their class, income, or circumstance, carries an inherent dignity because they are made in the image of God. 

In this age of greed, we are told to look out for ourselves and think about our neighbours if we have time, and if we want to. We are encouraged to view those suffering hardships as suspicious, burdensome, or unworthy of help as the authors of their own troubles. Christ teaches us something very different. He teaches us to stand with the poor, the marginalised, the foreigner and the downtrodden. Not when we feel like it, not when it’s easy, not because it makes us feel good. Whenever we see injustice, whenever we see suffering, Christ calls on us to act. 

As Parliamentarians, we are in a unique position to act on the national scale. Through the laws we pass, the institutions we shape, and the country we leave behind, our legacies will be forged. We have the power to build a country where everyone has fair access to healthcare, where no one is left homeless, and where we help those facing hardships, not abandon them. That is the challenge we face: not to govern, but to serve. To fight the good fight, to finish the race, to keep the faith, and in so doing to build a society worthy of the commandment Christ gave us: to love thy neighbour as thyself.

Skewers kebab shop in Pimlico has reported a major upturn in the number of customers since Labour's unusual announcement that they were keeping a vigil there to dissuade tory MPs from frequenting there while parliament was in session.

The business put out a statement saying:

Although we have seen less from several dozen very loyal customers, we have been overwhelmed by the positive nature of the several hundred people who have visited us for the first time, either as part of this vigil, or out of curiosity for what makes our kebabs so great.

The rise in new customers appears to be partly labour party activists, and many londoners who saw the social media post and decided to visit for the first time.

The Labour party has put out a statement saying:

We are pleased that this vigil has not only been able to hold to account tory MPs, but also has not harmed this valuable local business, and indeed seems to even be helping them! We call on all parliamentarians, especially the Chancellor, to sober up, return to debating in parliament, and to get their kebabs after our important work finishes for the day.

With a General Election around the corner, and the recent rise of 'food voting' to encourage turnout, bookies have increased their probability of a resounding 'kebab' victory on Thursday the 16th of July, from 4/1 to 4/3.

We approached the Chancellor for comment. He pretended to be on a phonecall until his phone started ringing after 30 seconds. His ringtone was the 80s version of the BBC election theme 'Arthur'.

Today, I stand before you humbled by the responsibility that has been entrusted to me and determined to lead our party forward in the years ahead.

I want to begin by thanking Zanytheus for his service to the Liberal Democrats. He leaves behind a party that remains united in its values and ambitious for Britain's future. I know I speak for members across the country when I thank him for his dedication and wish him all the best.

But tonight is not about looking backwards. It is about looking forwards.

At moments of change, every political party faces a choice. To become consumed by uncertainty, or to step forward with confidence and purpose. When this party needed leadership, I was prepared to answer that call. Not because leadership is a prize to be won, but because it is a responsibility to be shouldered.

Throughout my time in politics, whether serving as Foreign Secretary, Defence Secretary, or in opposition, I have always believed that public service demands more than simply identifying problems. It demands the courage to solve them. That is the spirit I intend to bring to the leadership of this party.

For too long Britain has been drifting. Our allies increasingly look elsewhere for leadership. Our economy has struggled to reach its potential. Our politics has become defined by short-term thinking and managed decline. The Liberal Democrats must offer something different.

As someone who has had the privilege of serving as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Defence, I have seen first-hand how much respect Britain can command when it acts with confidence, consistency and purpose. I have also seen how quickly that influence can be lost when we turn inwards. Under my leadership, the Liberal Democrats will make the case for a Britain that is once again a trusted and reliable international partner.

That means investing in our national defence and recognising that security is the foundation upon which prosperity is built. It means standing firmly with our allies in NATO. And it means rebuilding our relationships across Europe.

Ten years after the Brexit referendum, the reality is impossible to ignore. Whatever one's views were in 2016, Britain today is less connected to its largest trading partners, less influential in shaping European decisions, and facing barriers that serve neither our businesses nor our national interest. The answer is not to refight old arguments, but to recognise new realities.

We should be working towards closer cooperation with the European Union. Aligning regulations where it benefits British businesses. Deepening cooperation on foreign policy and security. Strengthening economic ties. And laying the foundations for a future where Britain once again takes its place at the heart of Europe.

At home, we must also restore a basic sense of security. People deserve safe streets, effective policing, secure borders and a justice system that commands confidence. Liberalism and law and order are not opposing values. A truly free society is one where people feel safe in their communities and confident that the law is upheld fairly and effectively.

The period ahead will not be easy. But I reject the idea that Britain's best days are behind us. We are a nation of immense talent, resilience and potential. The task before us is not to manage decline, but to lead renewal.

That is the mission I take on today. And together, that is the mission the Liberal Democrats will pursue.
