It's M43 Monday! Ask Us Anything about Micro Four-Thirds Photography - all questions welcome!

Please use this thread to ask your burning questions about anything micro four-thirds related.

  • Wondering which lens you should buy next?
  • Can't decide between Olympus and Panasonic?
  • Confused about how the clutch system works on some lenses?

These are all great questions, but you probably have better ones. Post 'em and we'll do our best to answer them.

It's 'Post your M43 photo' Thursday! Come share your best work with the community!

You've spent an entire week with your Micro Four-Thirds camera, documenting the world as it is, how it was, or how you think it should be. It's time to show us those photos and bask in the glory that only a weekly photo thread can bring!

Rules:

  1. The photo must be your own. No cross-posting someone else's work.
  2. You may only post one photo per week. Pick only your best work and show it off!
  3. Post your photo in a top-level comment for maximum exposure! (hehe get it, "exposure"?)
  4. Include as much detail as possible about the camera, the lens and the environment as possible. Good: "Shot with Olympus OM-D E-M1 w/ Panasonic 25mm f/1.8 lens @ 25mm f/2.0 ISO100 Time: 5:40PM in Los Angeles, California" Bad: "Look at this shot, isn't it neat?"
  5. Above all, be respectful. There's a big difference between the following comments: "OMG THAT PHOTO IS HORRIBLE" and "The lighting coming off his face looks uneven".

Forgotten lens_Panasonic Lumix 45–175 mm f/4–5.6

This telephoto zoom lens remains a high-performing mid-range telephoto zoom lens within M43 system. It is often compared to the Olympus or Panasonic 40–150 mm f/4–5.6 models, as well as the Panasonic 45–200 mm f/4–5.6. I chose it for its internal zoom mechanism (which doesn’t extend any further), its optical quality, its light weight and its compact size (90 mm), which makes it compatible with Olympus Pen cameras. Here are some recent photos taken either with my Olympus Pen E-P7 (photo series 1) or OM3 (photo series 2). Bonus: the lens is really cheap second-hand.

Should I replace my Rebel T5i?

Upvotes

Hey folks! I'm looking for some sage advice from the pros in this community. I have recently gotten back into photography after letting my trusty Rebel T5i collect dust for years. It was gift from a family member while I was in highschool, but life got in the way and I ended up letting go of the hobby. Fast forward over a decade and I've found myself bringing my camera along on my adventures. I'm quickly falling back in love with this art form and am considering investing my now grown-up money into my gear.

I imagine it would be helpful to have some context for the kind of photography I'm interested in. My buddies and I load up our motorcycles into trailers and tour the country exploring national parks and bucket-list cities. Wildlife, landscape, and action sports photography have been my primary subjects.

After GoPro announced their upcoming Mission 1 ILS, my eyes were opened to the MFT/M43 format and am considering the OM-1 as a potential replacement. The portability and "affordability" of the format is a big selling point. I'd love to hear your pros and cons.

I have been looking at the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM as a potential telephoto for my current set-up instead of replacing everything. A poor craftsman blames his tools, so I'm curious as to whether or not you guys even recommend upgrading. It would be nice to have a modern camera that uses modern batteries, micro SD, modern tech and features, etc. I would also like a more portable and rugged platform.

Lenses I own:

  • Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM
    • I understand why they call it a "nifty-fifty"; I absolutely love this lens. If I end up replacing my camera body, I would also need to replace this lens with a comparable model.
  • Canon EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM
    • A cheap and crispy ultra-wide. I like this lens but it hasn't seen much use as of late.

Lenses I'd "need":

  • 50mm "nifty-fifty" equivalent for the new camera body
  • A convinient grab-and-go zoom lens for street photography
  • An ultrawide for landscape
  • A telephoto fo landscape and action sports

What kinds of subjects do you intend to shoot?

  • Backpacking / Hiking subjects (i.e. wildlife, landscape)
  • Travel subjects (i.e. architecture, street photography)
  • Action sports (specifically, motorcycles. Lacking a telephoto has been an issue. It would be nice to not have to stand in the road when photographing my fellow riders lmao)Thank you all in advance for your input, let me know if there's any further info you'd need!

M43 has not helped my GAS problem. Just reached 50 lenses, which I guess I could justify given my recent 50th bday: finally I have an age-appropriate hobby.

Enjoying a bit of summer holidays to do two of my favorite things, ride a bicycle and taking pictures. Photographed with an Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III paired with Panasonic Lumix 12-32 mm f/3.5-5.6 and Olympus 40-150 mm f/4-5.6.

Hope you enjoy them. Feedback is welcome, if constructive :)
