What is the meaning if this song and what meassage are they conveying

Lyrics:

Intro]
Everything that you...are...
Everything that you...are...
I hate about...you
I want to cut you slowly...slowly
Watch you bleed for me
I wanna help you...die
I'm in love with the sky...

[Verse 1]
Close your eyes and jump
You wanna fly?
Close your eyes and jump!

[Verse 2]
You better check your pulse
I think the hearse went by!

[Verse 3]
(Uh)
Yo, shut the fuck up and listen
Before you're down to nothing, without a pot to piss in
You're missing the point that I'm mapping on this chart-
Everything we could be, everything we're not
Come on, give it all you got
All I've got is an excuse
A noose for my hurt, feel it jerking me loose
(Been lathing abuse) And it's breaking me up
I'm bordering final and enough's enough
You keep sucking on your own dick, you're bound to break your neck
I think that I detect a sick sign of self respect
What did I expect? I expected so much more from myself
Now why can't I open my eyes?
I think I'm fucking dead

[Chorus]
You better check your pulse
I think the hearse went by!
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Crucified!)
We all fall, we're all falling, falling down (Purified!)
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Lullaby!)
Unborn
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Crucified!)
We all fall, we're all falling, falling down (Purified!)
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Lullaby!)
Unborn

[Verse 4]
Dressed like a costume party, everybody in disguise
See the mask on your face but it won't hide your eyes
My demise marks my birth, unborn into light
Now you wanna take me, show me wrong from right?

[Bridge]
Well you can kiss my paraphilia
And you can kiss my sadist side
I wanna thank you for your welcome
Let me carve the shit out from inside
It's only a dream, cry yourself back to sleep
Let your mind seep down where all secrets keep
Deep beneath the calm surface, a serpent's eyes
(Open wide) A breath of death in its lies

[Chorus]
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Crucified!)
We all fall, we're all falling, falling down (Purified!)
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Lullaby!)
Unborn
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Crucified!)
We all fall, we're all falling, falling down (Purified!)
We all fall, we all, we all fall down (Lullaby!)
Unborn!
Unborn and I'm born again
Unborn!
Unborn and I'm born again
Unborn!
Unborn and I'm born again
Unborn!
Unborn and I'm born again

[Verse 5]
(And I'm born again)
Kiss my paraphilia
Kiss my sadist side
Thank you for your welcome
Let me carve the shit out from inside
That old man, damn, he sure can talk
He said that I fucked Jesus in a trailer park
'N that ain't the truth, it was in the Ritz hotel
I wore a condom so I wouldn't burn in Hell!

Maybe I'm dead!

[Pre-Chorus]
You better check your pulse, I think the hearse went by
Denial still stings in the lifeless eyes

Unborn!

[Outro]
(Unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again, unborn again)

Can Someone Please Explain The Meaning of, “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonite”?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I know that the band has gone on record to say that the song is about a person trying to reach an old flame and reconnect with her, but I feel like I read somewhere that the song was about Michael Stipe taking care of his sick mother and trying to get a hold of her while out. That is the meaning I always assumed, especially with the chorus, “Call me when you try to wake her up”, and when he talks about Dr. Seuss and Instant Soup. It sounds like he is recounting childhood memories before his mother succumbs to her illness. Am I thinking of a totally different song by them or another group that has a song with this meaning, or am I reading too deep into this whimsical song? Thank you for reading!

I found the essay I wrote about my interpretation of Not Now from Junior year.

Brandon Bertrand
Not Now
“Not Now” was released as a single for the Greatest Hits Album in 2005 by the band Blink-182. The song is a story about a man who has passed away. Once he realizes what is happening, emotions of fear and regret evoke within him. He longs to be with his lover again, and regrets not being able to be with her. Although she cannot see him, he sees her. He pleads with her, begs her to stay with him- knowing she cannot hear him. As the singer approaches the white light, he makes a promise to wait for her in the afterlife. The story of “Not Now” conveys a beautiful message of reacting emotions.
The first verse of “Not Now” talks about Tom Delonge (The primary singer) reacting to his fate of death. Confused and horrified, he reaches out to his lover: “Come here, please hold my hand for now Help me, I’m scared please show me how to fight this”(Blink-182, 01:08-1:19). He does not know what is happening, but he knows that he is terrified. He is hurt because she can not hold his hand, her comfort is all he could ever dream of. As the song continues, Delonge starts to accept his fate of death: “God has a master plan and I guess I am in His demand”(Blink-182, 01:20-01:25). He realizes that there is no going back, he is dead and that will not change. When the next line arrives, Delonge starts to passionately cry out: “Please save me, this time I cannot run And I’ll see you when this is done”(Blink-182 01:25-01:35). At this point, Delonge is hysterical with his emotions. He begs her to help him; after all, he is not ready to die. Then, he immediately calms down in realization she will one day join him. He begins to understand that he is not suffering anymore, as he is going to the afterlife, and she is going to suffer without him: “And now I have come to realize That you are the one who’s left behind”(Blink-182, 01:35-01:44). As he says this, he feels grief and sadness that he is leaving her. The first verse of “Not Now” holds a pack of emotions that seem to be an imminent response of regret, pain and anger.
The chorus of “Not Now” is a series of reminding messages to Delonge’s lover, correlating to his discombobulated emotions used in the song. He cries for her to stay, and as he fades away he is literally begging her: “Please stay until I’m gone, I’m here hold on To me”(Blink-182 01:44-1:50, 02:20-2:26). This symbolizes how scared he truly is.  As he fades, she is the one he wants to stay with. He makes one last promise to her as he crosses into the afterlife, “ I’m right here, waiting And take my one last breath, and don’t forget That I will be right here, waiting”(Blink-182 2:27-2:38). This line is saying that he will not take another lover in the afterlife. When she dies he will be waiting for her. In the chorus, Delonge seems to progress further and further from his lover in a physical sense, but mentally he is as close as he can be.
It is the second verse in “Not Now” where Delonge truly accepts his fate. In this short verse, he comes off almost yelling “I see a light, it feels good And I’ll come back soon just like you would”(Blink-182, 02:03-02:12). Delonge goes to the common cliché of a “white light”. He is looking back, making a promise to his lover that he will come back to her when she joins him in death. He just regrets not taking advantage of his time with her more, and shows this when he sings “And I wish, I gave you one last kiss”(Blink-182, 02:16-02:20). His regret is strong, but he knows he cannot go back. The second verse of the song is short and, and leads into the extended chorus. It is an incredible bridge, as it lays Delonge’s acceptance of passing, it effortlessly holds it with a grain of salt.
“Not Now” is about so much more than death. The song is about the pain Delonge feels whilst being ripped from the person he loves, into a place that he is scared of. Although Delonge’s persona throughout the song represents somebody going through extreme hysteria, it shows it in a way that is nothing less than human. Delonge’s reaction is a beautiful mess of emotions.

So let's say the one who sings the song is called A and the one who the song is directed to is B.

I make mistakes sometimes

You know you taught me that

That I can do much better

Person Aade mistakes. Person B taught them that.

I see this as B showed A their mistakes and tried to make them see them and learn from them.

And B tried to show A that they can do mich better than now and to move from the mistakes.

You were the one, I was one of many

This shows that A didn't have any options, only B.

Meanwhile B had many options but still chose to love A.

I guess that I was a weight to carry

Holdin' you down while you held me steady

This shows that B was holding A steady. And that A was just unstable or in a tough situation.

B still chose to be with A even though it was detroying them internaly.

I would've stayed 'til we're dead and buried

But ooh, not you

This shows that B saw this relationship is not great and that it wouldn't work out. So B chose to leave and be the 'bad guy' even though they knew it wouldn't survive.

Meanwhile A still doesn't see that the relationship wouldn't survive and that B actualy did the right thing of letting go.

And the lyrics: I guess that I was a weight to carry

Holdin' you down while you held me steady.

That this is also one of the reasons why B left A.

Not only for themselves but also for A.

When I googled the song. It avtualy painted A as the right person. While B as the 'bad guy'. I think this is bad and that B was actualy the good one while A just painted them as a 'bad guy' meanwhile B didn't deserve that.

Sk what do you guys think of my interpretation?

i like the way you kiss me - Artemas

Here's a layered interpretation I haven't seen discussed.

The song plays at several layers.

First layer is a fun, upbeat, detached relationship.

Second layer is a narcissist who is self-aware of how they are using someone for their gratification.

Third Layer is a narcissist revealing how he operates to you, the listener. Both by telling and showing.

Fun, upbeat, detached relationship

The song shows a two way street with two different signers sharing their perspective back and forth.

The song has an upbeat, electronic music and the tone of both singers are chills. It is hard to discern there are two singers and two perspectives, but it is there. Notice the undertones though, that it is hard to distinguish the two personas. It sounds like one person talking just about the other and themselves, but two are talking. Notice that in a self-consumed relationship, it is hard to identify two identities. I'll give you a hint, the explicit persona is the narcissist, the second singer is the victim, unaware that they have lost their identity.

In this chill song, it is interesting that even in the first layer there is depth.

Narcissist who is self-aware

"I like everything you give me"

I like the way you kiss me

I can tell you miss me.

I can tell it hits.

"I know you think you are on the path of getting what you want. That is what I want. I'll gaslight you."

I can tell you miss me.
I can tell it hits, hits, hits, hits.

Not tryna be romantic (fake openness)

Does it turn you on when I turn you around?

Don't you wanna make me proud?
Cause I'm so proud, baby, I'm so proud of you.

"I know I keep this dangling in front of you"

You say we're done, but here you stay
I'll hit it from the back. Just so you don't get attached

Do I stress you out? Can I help you out?

Don't you wanna make me proud?
Cause I'm so proud, baby, I'm so proud of you.

A narcissist revealing how he operates to you, the listener

When they are talking to the victim, they are actually talking to you, the listener.

"I'm telling you my playbook."

I can tell you miss me. (I know when she is emotionally invested.)

I can tell it hits. (I measure my effect on her.)

Not tryna be romantic. (I set the relationship on my terms while appearing honest.)

I'll hit it from the back just so you don't get attached. (I control intimacy so I get what I want without emotional obligation.)

You said you're scared I'll let you down. (I understand exactly where she is vulnerable.)

Just stick around, and you'll find out. (I keep uncertainty alive because it keeps her invested.)

Do I stress you out? Can I help you out? (I create insecurity, then become the relief from it.)

"Watch my playbook"

You bite my lip just for the taste. (Notice how their desire revolves around me.)

You take the heat and with such grace. (Notice how they tolerate the imbalance because they're hoping I'll eventually give them what they want.)

You say we're done, but here you stay. (Notice how I ignore what they say and focus on what they do. They stay, because I have the control.)

Don't you wanna make me proud? (Notice how I make my approval something they work for.)

'Cause I'm so proud, baby, I'm so proud of you. (Notice how I reward them with validation instead of giving them what they actually want.)

Does it turn you on when I turn you around? (I deflect from the issue and make their test, my control while keeping them attached.)

Final Thoughts

There are 4 personas:
- The narcissist
- The victim
- The listener
- The dynamic

Depending on from which persona you read from, the lyrics hit at a different layer.

Radiohead - Let Down

Listening to the lyrics of Let Down has always been really moving to me. I know there are many different interpretations, but one part of the song has always stood out to me.

You know where you are with

You know where you are with

Floor collapses, floating

Bouncing back

To me, this part describes the monotony of life. You know what life gives you. You know what to expect from the people around you. Life becomes a cycle of collapsing and recovering, over and over again. It’s about knowing that cycle and living through it.

Then comes the part that fascinates me most:

And one day, I am gonna grow wings

A chemical reaction

I know these lines have been interpreted in many different ways, but I’ve always felt that the combination of “I’m gonna grow wings” and “a chemical reaction” points toward death.

“A chemical reaction” represents the physical reality of death, while “growing wings” suggests something beyond it. To me, it’s a beautiful contrast between the scientific explanation of death and the spiritual image of an afterlife.

Then we get:

Hysterical and useless

This is the line I’m least certain about, but here’s how I hear it.

I don’t think it’s saying that life itself is meaningless. Instead, I think it’s describing how life looks after death. Once you’ve “grown wings,” all the disappointments, anxieties, and overwhelming emotions that once consumed you suddenly seem hysterical and useless.

Many religions describe a similar idea: from the perspective of an afterlife, earthly worries seem small and temporary. I think that also fits the rest of the song, which is full of disappointment, monotony, and emotional exhaustion.

Of course, I could be completely wrong—that’s the beauty of Radiohead’s lyrics—but this interpretation has always made the song even more emotional for me.

Romeo & Juliet Song

This song is from a modernized Romeo & Juliet play, I'm trying to transcribe all the lyrics. I can hear a lot of it, but some of it just sounds like gibberish. It's hard because the words I do hear clearly are kind of all nonsensical party talk so context isn’t super useful.

I just need help filling in the blanks.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1JwwTylcx2jqQqG97yddNa0W3OXDgiMus/view?usp=sharing

Here's what I have so far:

Show you some magic

Get some whiplash

Our chance, one night

Let's rock, two times

Take you on a wild wile

Show you I'm a wild child

Our chance, one night

One way to heaven

Don't be late

Welcome, gentlemen

Ladies *I have no idea what he says here* with you

My mistresses

Which of you will now deny to dance?

You are welcome, gentlemen

*Something* girls

No witnesses, no plan for this

No tale to twist, no!

So say yes to this

Big mess *something* when it hits

Take it! *Verse?*

Show you some magic

Get some whiplash

Our chance, one night

Let's rock, two times

Take you on a wild wile

Show you I'm a wild child

Our chance, one night

One way to heaven

Don't be late

No witnesses, no plan for this

No tale to twist, Paris!

Say yes to this

Big mess *something* when it hits

Let me hear you, Verona!

Verona! Introducing Juliet!

Sing for me, my *something*, sing!

Little bit of magic

Get some whiplash

Our chance, one night

Let's rock, two times

Take you on a wild wile

Show you I'm a wild child

Our chance, one night

One way to heaven

Don't be late

No witnesses, no plan for this

No tale to twist, baby!

So say yes to this

Big mess *something* when it hits

I always thought that this song was about a girl who dies leaving on Earth her lover, who slowly moves on and finds another partner and all. Eventually, someone made me notice that it's simply about a breakup. I still like my interpretation better (^.^)

What are some of your favourite song interpretations from 70s, 80s, and 90s music?

I'd love to hear what your favourite personal interpretations of any songs from the 70s, 80s, and/or 90s are. So many interesting things were going on with lyrics, sound, and musical composition that, often, a single song could be interpreted in such diverse ways. I'm curious to hear some found meanings in music from those decades.

Does this rap lyric technique have a name?

From “My Chick Bad” by Ludacris:

>>> “Couple girlfriends and they all a lil' crazy
Comin' down the street like a parade, Macy's”

From “Bed Rock” by Young Money:

>>> “He say, ‘Nicki don't stop, you the bestest’
And I just be coming off the top, asbestos”

And

>>> “I love ya sushi roll, hotter than wasabi
I race for your love
Shake and bake, Ricky Bobby”

Specifically the last line in these quotes have a section where say a single word inside the rhyme, that kind of correlates at a distance to the rest of the line e.g. Macy’s is a parade, Asbestos went in the top of the building, and Ricky Bobby was a (fictional) race car driver.

This writing happened a lot during the 2010’s raps but I can’t find out if this kind of writing has a name or not. It’s not an ad lib and I wouldn’t consider it a punch line because these aren’t battle raps.

What's the meaning of the lyrics of "For Prayer" by Wye Oak?

I love the song, it's been my favourite these weeks. I adore the melody and the lyrics are catchy and they have clung to my brain. I kind of have a grasp on the overall meaning, or at least an interpretation of the big picture, however wrong it may be. I'm curious about these few lines though:
"All this dirt is my disease" - To me, dirt here represents sinful carnal desire, but let me know if you have different ideas!

"You drop by to help me out [...] Baby what's all this about?" - I don't really have an understanding of what these lines may be about, maybe i'm blind to see..

"I wanted bees but I got bird" - I get that it's referencing the idiom 'the birds and the bees', but why? What does wanting bees and getting bird mean?

"So you scratch yours and I'll scratch mine" - Another idiom reference, 'you scratch my back, i scratch yours', but again, it's flipped. Why? Does this imply that they should "both mind their own business"?

"But I'll forgive and make it right, if it freezes up tonight"
"You either win it or you don't; It happens now, unless it won't" - Win what? And what's gonna happen? It's funny because these lines are probably my favorite from the song, but I cannot in good faith say that I've got it figured out.

What does it mean? Can anyone explain, I’m confused

So my crush posted a music on Ig notes and the lyrics said :

Some things you just can't refuse
She wanna ride me like a cruise
And I'm not tryna lose
Then you're left in the dust
Unless I stuck by ya
You're the sunflower
I think your love would be too much
Or you'll be left in the dust
Unless I stuck by ya
You're the sunflower
You're the sunflower

About me and him: I like him and he knows. I said he can’t reciprocate but after that, we talked to each other everyday and until now, its been 2 months.

Everclear: Santa Monica

Art Alexakis, singer for Everclear, had a girlfriend when he was a schoolboy, who committed suicide when she was 15.

AA filled his pockets with sand and lead and attempted to jump off the Santa Monica pier.

AA said that the vision and voice of a brother who died of an overdose compelled him not to jump.

The song could definitely be about his brother, but it also resonates with me as his young girlfriend talking to him as well, and that the lyrics in Santa Monica could be a back-and-forth conversation with her.

- AA: ''I am still living with your ghost, lonely and dreaming of the west coast''

Even though he is physically standing on the west coast, her palpable absence leaves him unable to enjoy it to the point that it is not even the west coast as he used to know it, when they went there together.

- GF: ''I don't want to be your downtime, I don't want to be your stupid game'':

The girlfriend still has the human emotions that she had at death, feeling unsure if she was loved, and feeling like trying to find out wasn't worth the pain.

- AA: ''I don't want to be the bad guy, I don't want to do your sleepwalk dance anymore''

Without her there to talk to, AA feels guilty for her death (he is the bad guy that couldn't save her from herself) but has no outlet to find answers, and no way to make things better. The only time he can see or hear her is when he is ''sleepwalking'', it's not reality, and there is no feedback or closure, only static memories.

- AA: ''I just want to see some palm trees, I will try and shake away this disease''

AA believes that there is no hope in seeing the vivid colors and scenery of the coast that he used to with his girlfriend by his side, at least not while alive and without her.

- GF: ''We could live beside the ocean, leave the fire behind, swim out past the breakers, watch the world die''

Just as he is about to jump, his girlfriend lets him know for the first time that they have always been together, and that their connection is eternal. However, the physical beauty that AA misses (the palm trees, the ocean), are temporary, decaying, and inevitably left behind. The girlfriend wants him to be alive on Earth so he can enjoy these things while he still can.

The World I Know by Collective Soul

I was just listening to Collective Soul's The World I Know. I wasn't sure what all the lyrics were, so I looked them up. There's one word that all the lyric sites have as "pity", but no matter how many times I've listened to it, I can only hear the word "ability"

The line is shown on the lyric sites as "I drink myself of new-found pity" or "I dream myself a newfound pity". I have always thought it was "I dream myself a newfound ability". Does anyone e"ability" or am I crazy?

"Thirteenth Step" Taught Me About Overcoming Addiction

I rarely listen to albums all the way through, but I recently rediscovered A Perfect Circle, so I decided to give "Thirteenth Step" a listen.

I absolutely loved this album, and I deeply appreciated the new perspective it gave me on addiction, and how addicts truly need patience and empathy from others. Truly, addiction is a kind of personal Hell which many people struggle to escape from--and it's made all the harder when they are devoid of emotional support.

I felt inspired to make a video analyzing the song "The Outsider," off of this album, which criticizes the perspective that addicts are just selfish, undisciplined, and pathetic people. The song calls us to view addicts, not as some nasty animals or lost causes, but rather hurt souls who need a helping hand. In my analysis, I expand on the themes of judgment, shame, and impatience, and how to truly help an addict, one must come to the table with a loving heart and the ability to meet an addict where they are. At the end of the day, empathy and patience are the greatest tools to help a loved one out of addiction. You truly can't force anyone to change, and in fact, taking an aggressive approach will only push them away further.

Please check it out: https://youtu.be/-mGnJrZ_Xrc
