PSA to newbies & Reminder for everyone else

Driving up here (going up/down the hill) requires your full attention. Seriously.

People haven't necessarily died in traffic accidents up here from speeding... They died from drivers not paying attention and crossing the center-line, leading to a head-on collision.

The strong winds can blow you. You can hit a curve and deer or cyclists you can't see until the last second are on the other side. There's often not a lot of shoulder room to safely swerve without further incident.

Just, be careful. I'm one of those people that has been here <5 years and so far I think about a half-dozen have died while commuting up/down/around here.

Mods, you'd be the real MVPs if you pinned this post.

Same town same problems 1956 hearing on housing problems

Thought Id share this document I came across. One could change the date and add a zero to the dollar values and it would be hard to tell the difference between housing problems of '56 and '26. Money excerpts that made me chuckle attached. Source: https://www.google.com/books/edition/Community_Problems_at_Los_Alamos/JrCAlFomCOcC?hl=en

An AI app used in lower grades is collecting kids' data without parental consent

The name of the app is Amira. It's being used in Kindergarten through 2nd grade classrooms.

Anyone else know about this?

Looks like you can opt out but it's kinda crazy that consent is just assumed.

PSA: YMCA related scam email

I'm not a member of the YMCA yet I got this email below and another one about verifying my email address. Beware, and don't click on emailed links!

The links go to daxko.com, which appears to be legit, but scammers often use legit sites like this.

Shuttles ?

I tried to look up shuttle information to share with a new hire, but I couldn’t find it any. Have things changed? Is there still a shuttle coming from Bernalillo County?

Some thoughts on Boomtown's future

We started Boomtown nearly three years ago as a publication that would look at the deeper issues our community faces., follows the evidence wherever it leads, and explains not just what happened; but why it matters to the residents of Los Alamos.

We’re incredibly proud of what Boomtown has grown into. Our stories spark conversations, hold community institutions accountable, and spotlight the people who work behind the scenes to make our community unique. Every story we’ve published has been part of our bigger mission, to build a stronger and more informed community.

Boomtown has been a small, local business from the start. Our plan has always been that our readers – not advertisers, not corporate owners – would contribute the funding to keep Boomtown alive and free of outside influence.

Since we started, we received nearly $50,000 in state and national grants to help us build something we hoped could become a sustainable, community-supported newsroom.

But these grants are running out, and unless something changes, Boomtown will run out of operating funds in October.

We currently have over 2,500 subscribers on our e-mail list, and many more readers on social media and through word of mouth. But right now, only about 10% of those subscribers are paid subscribers. We need to double that number in order to keep doing what we’re doing.

If you believe Los Alamos deserves journalism that goes beyond the headlines, we need your help now.
Here’s how you can make a difference:
-Become a paid subscriber at $12 / month
-Tell your friends about Boomtown. If you’re unable to afford for a subscription at this time, please help us spread the word about what we do. Every week we meet people in Los Alamos who still haven’t discovered us.
-Keep giving us feedback. Boomtown has always been shaped by our readers. Whether it’s something we’re doing well, or something we should change, please get in touch and let us know.

Over the next few months, we’ll be publishing some of the most ambitious reporting we’ve ever done, including investigations into school district transparency and accountability, a community experiment using LiDAR technology to improve pedestrian safety, and a number of stories on community social issues, including domestic violence, obstetric care availability, and human-wildlife interactions in Los Alamos.

We want to publish these stories.

We want to celebrate Boomtown’s third birthday in November.

Most of all, we want to keep building the kind of journalism that helps Los Alamos understand itself; not just through headlines, but through deeper reporting, meaningful context, and personal stories.

If Boomtown has ever helped you better understand our community, challenged you to think differently, or reported a story that you believe needed to be told, please support us with your paid subscription or a donation today.

On behalf of the Boomteam, thank you for helping us build a stronger community.

An important reminder that multiple species of rattlesnakes live in Los Alamos, and they're extremely active this time of year. The victim is in stable condition at LAMC.

Those who are leaving los alamos/LANL from summer internships soon

Hi, my last post made me realize that maybe asking those who are leaving directly might help me better understand what kinds of places might be coming onto the market in the coming weeks/days. Ive started to see some new places come on zillow/similar the last week, but was wondering for those who interned over the summer and are leaving soon:

When are you leaving/where did you live?

I'd love to be able to kinda get a sneak peak at places that might come on the market soon, not to necessarily count on them as where I'll live, but to better understand what options could become available soon.

I am kinda stressed in that I have a place in los alamos I really like, but 1900 rent feels a little expensive considering my 70k salary, though as a kinda default option, it seems doable. But if i were to know a bunch of cheaper options are about to become free, it would ease my mind a bit and maybe Id choose instead a cheaper/worse short term place, so I could grab someones old place instead

Lot of words to say if youre moving out soon, please share either the old listing, descriptions, etc of ur place, I'd love to hear about em! Thank you

Why is rent so high here?

Why is the rent so high here? Some of the buildings look very unkept and some people have said their landlords do not make any attempts at upkeep and mostly do not live in the state. The town itself is pretty bare so what is the reason? Please explain. It just sounds like people are being taken advantage of.
