I'm writing a story that has a lineman character, and there's a few details that I'm having trouble answering (getting harder to find direct answers) but then I stumbled upon this subreddit and figured I could ask actual linemen! I'm not a lineman myself, so apologizes if I get some of the terminology wrong.

So, when doing routine maintenance on a powerline, how long would you say that takes? Ballpark numbers. I'm picturing one of the big ones, but I wouldn't mind knowing the average time on the smaller powerline poles too.

It's a scene of an experienced lineman and his apprentice, if that changes the timing a bit.

I keep getting work shift hours when looking this up lol.

I have an offer for an entry telecom lineman job that starts at $21/hr in PA (I have to commute, but the hotel is paid for). The second job is line clearance in NJ, 30-35 minutes away, paying $26/hr.

If you were in my shoes, what would you pick? I passed the aptitude test and completed the interview for both. I also have my CDL B.

It's been multiple times for different companies on different jobs that all the foremen want to get in the bucket and climb when the good work comes out. Is this how it is everywhere? Yeah I get working foreman whatever yadda yadda. I don't care about the rules. I'm talking more like the "code".

I feel like the JL gets the bucket unless they don't want it. If I have to do all the other dumb shit normally I should also get the good shit or shit i at least want to do or don't mind.

Long story long, night shift got to me and I popped off and threw a little hissy fit for being on the ground. I'm not proud of it, we laughed it off after, I know I'm a retard,and showed my ass, I apologized for it, whatever. Fine.

But I still think foreman should get second pick. You chose to get out of the bucket and get a pickup truck, you got your raise and an iPad or whatever, If you want to do things that aren't Lineman things go do them. If you want to be a lineman, go take a JL call.

Correct me if I'm wrong, you don't have to be nice but I would like some explanation.

Taking my eval for Seclat next week to come in as a 4th step. Got about 4200 hours on a overhead line crew, doing pole change out, reconduct, and conversion. Anyone got any idea what this eval has in it. Any info helps

I had a great interview for the apprenticeship feeling very confident in myself. I’ve been fortunate enough to run storm with my groundman ticket but, I would like to not be completely useless. If I don’t get in on this round I will still use said tools on storm when given the opportunity. I know the basics as far as linemans, channel locks, & hammer. I’ve learned most of the terminology off of YouTube so when I’m told to grab things I know what said item is the problem is the tools to put everything together. I had gotten a jls number and was told he would text me a list which I never received. Thanks in advanced I’m hungry to learn and be useful.

Texas Journeyman here. Looking to head out to Cali and sign books, realistically I would really like to find work and stay out there for a few years.

Everything I hear makes me pretty reluctant to do so. Texas lineman are frowned upon to begin with, even though I’m more than willing to keep learning when I get there. Stories about guys going and getting spun after a week or 2 of work because you’re not their buddy or you don’t know anyone who knows someone there. I’ve never had issues in the past with this, but it’s definitely the word from a few of the guys I’ve talked to about wanting to do this. What I would ask is how realistic is it for me to expect to get there and work a couple years without these issues?

Hi, started working in Michigan as a contractor and ended up ripping the bucket off the bucket truck thinking the truck will clear the trees.

Was let go and didn’t think anything of it until later on when I read the termination slip. They checked the box (disregard of safety instruction) under the Discharge category.

Asked them if they will let me voluntary quit but they said they already sent the slip out.

My question is with this record on me, will that contractor ever hire me back ? They are pretty big and out at different state as well.

1. Is it possible to clear my record? I feel like that should not be a violation of safety.

Should I talk to the hall about this? Or just sign the books and continue working and think nothing of it?

I don’t really want my career to be ruined with a safety violation tagged to me. I don’t want that record to be with me for the rest of my career.

Please let me know how you would handle this situation. And what are the pros/cons .What actions will you take. Appreciate all the replies and thank you for reading this.

(The bucket didnt get completely torn off, but it got cracked, I know it’s my fault and it costs a lot of money)

I interviewed for local 245 on Tuesday. I was the only black guy to even interview lmaooo. The interview went great ,had the committee laughing a bunch but we also had some serious moments too. I shook everybody's hand at the beginning of the interview and also at the end of the interview thanking them for the interview. When I shook the Kent Power contractors hand , he shook my hand hard as crap and looked me in my eye and said "keep being motivated and hungry".

I am just wondering when would I get my rank and I'm wondering from experience does anyone think I would rank decently high after having such a good interview like that?

I just tested and interviewed for local 1249 I got an 8/9 on the test and after the interview they said that it was a good interview. I have my class A cdl and I currently work for IBEW 363 as an apprentice. Is there a way to know what number I am on the list or when could I expect to hear back? What are my chances of getting in?
