As the title says, reddit's default spam filter is automatically removing comments with a shortened link.

This bears mentioning since product recommendations are commonplace in a lighting focused subreddit.

We can go through and manually approve these comments, but we won't always catch them.

Therefore, please ensure if you post a product link, it is a full weblink, and not a shortened link. For example:

Need Design Advise Recessed light spacing and sizing for attic lounge using Elco Koto

Post image

I'm making a cozy attic lounge room for reading/music/hobby. The closet hides the water heater.

It's a 16' x 12' room with a 16' by 4.5' flat ceiling a few inches under 8' tall. I'm putting rockwool in the ceiling, so using fabric as a ceiling finish instead of drywall to act as a large acoustic absorption panel. I'm also planning on using Govee's 16' COB strips as ascent lighting behind the top ceiling trim for its uniformity and built-in diffusion.

I see the Elco Koto system is highly recommend and I was looking at the 950 lm Sunset LED module ELK09SD. The 3" recessed housing EL390ICA would work since the ceiling is insulated and air tight already.

Would 3 rows of two 3" recessed can lights spaced 2.5' from the end walls, 5.5' between each other, and 18" from the ceiling trim be recommended for this space? Or would 2 rows of 2 spaced 10 ft apart, totaling 4 lights be enough?

Lighting would look roughly like the rendering. Any other recommendations?

Need Design Advise Where would you put the light switches for this room? PINK, BLUE or RED dots? …or somewhere else?

This is my Sketchup model for a cabinet system I built. Millwork has integrated aluminum LED channels for the shelves/bed (24V class2, driver in cabs). My question… ideally, should ALL lights be controllable at the door?

A switch in the desk alcove seems like a nice intentional detail so you don’t need to get out of bed. Is there a right way for premium homes? 🤷‍♂️ Appreciate any thoughts before I take a router to these painstakingly finished cabinets!

Need Design Advise SuperBrightLEDs 4" downlight experience?

I am doing an acoustic ceiling so I am looking for appropriate 4" LED downlights. I am told it should have an attached junction box with a putty pad for ideal noise mitigation.

The HALO one I wanted has a flush lens (like a wafer) so I am worried about glare. So I found this which looks very similar, but has a nice recessed light source. https://www.superbrightleds.com/led-residential-lighting/recessed-downlights/rlf4d-sw5a10-jb

Anyone have experience with these? 90CRI, dimmable, and selectable CCT just like the HALO RL4.

Replacement Recessed LED lighting but with a GU24 base

Post image
1 Upvotes

One of my LED downlights from my 2015 kitchen remodel is starting to fail, and I'm struggling to find a replacement. The light is a Cree CR4-575L-27K-12-GU24, standard 4" recessed light (575 lumen, 2700K), but it has a GU24 base. I think this was chosen by my contractor due to CA codes at the time.

I am having a hell of a time finding a similar light to replace it--I can't find *any* 4" recessed lights with a GU24 base. Did the industry give up on these? Do I need to find something else, or swap out my wiring?

Thanks!

Obrigado.

Need Design Advise Bulb for Antique "pools of light"

Post image
1 Upvotes

I am trying to figure out what bulbs will work to cast the light beams with these antique chandelier "Pools of light". I made a spiral hanging base. But frosted doesn't work. I tried a chromalux clear glass, but that doesn't work (plus they are wicked hot)

Looking for simplest bulbs, not incandescent or halogen because I live in Austin tx. Hopefully pull string compatible and as low flicker/blue as possible.

I was trying to find a bulb that fits all my migraine needs of no flicker, braid spectrum, high CRI, low blue spike, etc etc, but they are all frosted.

So hoping to have lights shining up the spiral to cast the prisms, and then the bulb I need for vision shining down.

Since the chromalux didn't work I don't want to just order other clear ones and have even MORE bulbs I can't use.

Do the pools need to be a certain distance from the light? I'm thinking not the angle since I moved the chromalux all around, there were pools above, below, left, right, and it only cast the shadows.

I am open to 😭😭 scrapping the hours of work doing the spiral though if needed.

This has already been a several weeeeeekkksss project for a number of reasons, so hopefully a straightforward solution, not recreating the wheel, and not any $70 bulbs.

Thanks🤞

Need Design Advise How do I make my home feel less like an office?

I work from my bedroom, so my desk is basically my office during the day. But after work, I still use the same space to watch shows, scroll, or play games.

The problem is, even when I close my laptop, the room still feels like work mode.

After you finish work, do you change anything about your desk or room setup, or do you just leave it as is?

I’m curious what actually helps make the space feel like home again.

I was watching a video about a tunnel being dug and I noticed these led strips, which honestly look pretty amazing. Are these actually available for us to buy or is it something cost prohibitive and not worth the hassle?

Need Design Advise What lighting upgrade made the biggest difference in your home?

I've been thinking about changing some of the lighting in my place and realized there are way more options than I expected. Between LED bulbs, different brightness levels, and color temperatures, it's easy to get overwhelmed. Before I spend money on anything, I wanted to hear from people who have already gone through the process. What did you end up choosing, and is there anything you'd avoid or recommend?

Need Design Advise Light DIY’s

Hey! I am moving to a new place and my only source of light after dark will be this bendy 6 light lamp. I think this is a neat time to experiment with making it fun, so I’m curious: is there any recommendations you have for making the lights more fun

For example, I want them to project fun colors and patterns, but I’m not sure how to do that or what materials to use.

Thanks!

Replacement T8 tube light help

I just started as the new Manager for an apartment complex and we need urgently 30 of these lights.
I looked online, but I am only really seeing bulbs with F32T8 and other numbers that differ from the TL835 w Plus Long Life Alto (does the plus long life alto even mean anything?) , like the screenshot in the last pic. This one says F32T8/TL965 but looks compared to the other specs from my original that it could work?
I have audhd so I’m like very indecisive on things that are not precisely what I’m looking for, granted I know nothing about these kinds of lights.

Do these have to be specific replacements to the t?
Does it have to be Phillips?
Would this work?

Replacement Is it even possible to go trimless here?

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Planning for a remodel project where we're replacing all our 6 inch cans with 2 inch trimless recessed lights that have a 7 inch mud ring (Elco Koto). Most every light is in a reasonable spot to do this, but not these two.

The general plan is to cut out a rectangle larger than the mud ring, replace the fixture from above or below, patch the rectangle, then cut out a new smaller hole for the mud ring before finishing.

Even if the lights are moved slightly (like move the one above the window centered with the air registers), I am questioning if seamlessly floating these two is possible without demoing the wooden valence around the blinds to get more drywall space to work with.

Thoughts?

Also one wacky idea I have is to use this weird hole saw from Elco (EL4500) that counterbores a ring around the actual hole for the mud ring so it sits flush, which might make it more possible since you don't have to float nearly as far.

Couldn't really find any reviews of it online or anything other than the marketing materials, but I bought it to test out. I'm going to try to replace the inner hole saw part with a different size for the 2" since it looks like the hole saw is removable.

Find Me This Fixture Where do collectors actually buy and sell authentic Ingo Maurer lighting?

I'm looking for some advice from people familiar with collectible designer lighting.

I'm in Canada and have several authentic Ingo Maurer pieces that I'm trying to sell. They're all genuine and most are brand new in their original packaging, but Facebook Marketplace, Kijiji, and Instagram haven't generated much interest. I realize these are niche pieces with a small buyer pool.

The pieces include:

  • My New Flame (brand new in box)
  • Lucellino Table (original halogen version, brand new)
  • Lucellino Wall LED (brand new)
  • Delight Wall Light (brand new)
  • Flying Flames components (brand new)

I'm not looking to sell them in this thread(Unless there is an interested buyer then let me know). I'm trying to figure out where serious collectors, architects, interior designers, and design enthusiasts actually shop for Ingo Maurer lighting.

Are there specific:

  • marketplaces,
  • Facebook groups,
  • forums,
  • Instagram accounts,
  • dealers,
  • consignment galleries,
  • auction houses,
  • or other communities

that specialize in collectible European designer lighting?

Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Need Design Advise Light fixture replacement

Hello! I recently had a light fixture break and I'm looking for a way to repair it (cheaply). Looking closely, it appears that the glass doesn't screw in so I'm worried it means a whole lamp replacement. Is that the case or is there an obvious workaround here?

Lighting Control I hate app based smart bulbs, so what is the best option for control with physical switches ??

I am updating a condo that I usually let a lot of my family and friends stay at. Therefore I need the light situation to be super intuitive so just regular switches, but I also want control over brightness and timetable white (not really interested in colors).

What’s the best option for this?

I’ve looked at Lutron and that’s like $300 per bulb (for tunable white can lights) and such a huge investment.

But then I hear people complain about the responsiveness of Philips hue.

Is there any middle ground? A tunable white light option with a physical switch or even a key pad to set scenes?

Any help would be appreciated.

Lighting Control Wondering is somebody knows what is going on

This wall light has been in place for about 30 years. In the last month, it started this crazy flickering. I don't know if it's the fixture, the connection or the switch. It is controlled by a basic 3 fixture light switch setup. Only this one is flickering. Anybody have any ideas about what to do? Thank you!
