Here we go! Another build challenge complete, this time with just a handful of entries, all of which were AWESOME!

Now's the time to vote for the best Insectoid spaceship!

Every single one of your entries is included in this poll.

A suggestion on how to pick the best entry: I'd say you should first go through all of them, pick the ones you like the most visually, and then click on the link to see the actual post with more pictures. Or click on every single one if you want to be really thorough, as the main picture might not fully show off the awesome details of the builds.

Please choose wisely. You have until Sunday, July 26th to choose the winner, so don't hesitate!

See you soon!

Vondrr

Really enjoyed building this ship. Bricks and parts are going in multiple directions, a complete free build and in the moment.

Just quick shots bcoz deadline looming ... Been pushing the last few hours to get this done for the July challenge ... alas this post will be too late. Oh well. I had good fun with this, sorting the legs and body proportions (which are still not right for the insect), building right-side up and upside-down and joining those sections together, and the general futzing.

MOC [MOC] Star Trek: Deep Space Nine — USS Defiant

Tough. Little. Ship.

"Officially, it's classified as an escort vessel. Unofficially, the Defiant's a warship. Nothing more, nothing less; to put it simply, it's overgunned and overpowered for a ship its size."

I’d wanted to build a larger USS Defiant from Star Trek for years, but I made myself one rule: I wasn’t going to do it at this scale unless I thought I could make something better than the versions already out there. That meant getting far beyond "close enough."

Now available on Rebrickable.

The Defiant is a nightmare of shallow curves, small shifts in angle, stepped armour and sections that only line up when everything is placed exactly where it should be. Move one connection by half a plate, change one wedge by a few degrees, and the whole silhouette starts to fall apart, as does structural integrity. A lot of this model had to be calculated before it could be built. Angles, offsets and attachment points were worked out so that the outer hull could follow the original schematics while still connecting to a strong internal frame.

It took repeated rebuilding to make those separate structures lock together strongly while still following the original schematics as closely as possible. The result is a model that captures not only the Defiant’s overall silhouette, but the smaller changes in curve, slope and armour profile that are so often simplified, or ignored entirely.

That same attention extends across the entire build. I’ve included every visible design, engineering and armament feature I could feasibly represent, along with the Chaffee shuttle inside the hangar and the detachable forward warhead. Note: There is no lighting included in these instructions.

Features:

  • Detachable forward warhead, allowing you to recreate one of the Defiant’s most extreme last-resort weapons.
  • Opening shuttlebay with the Chaffee, housed inside the underside of the ship and removable for separate display.
  • Character Studdies Defiant crew, featuring Benjamin Sisko, Jadzia Dax, Worf, Kira Nerys, Miles O’Brien and Nog on their own display stand (or crewed inside the bridge)
  • Rotatable display stand, so the Defiant can be preparing for warp, banking into combat or diving towards its next target.
  • Reinforced internal structure, with the nacelles and angled upper hull built as separate assemblies and attached to the main body using precisely calculated connection points for both strength and accuracy.
  • Highly accurate hull shaping, capturing the Defiant’s curves, armour profiles, recessed sections and subtle changes in angle as closely as possible at this scale.

Beyond that, I’ve worked hard to include every recognisable design, engineering and armament feature of the Defiant that could be represented at this scale:

  • Four forward pulse-phaser cannons
  • Quantum torpedo launcher
  • Forward and aft torpedo launchers
  • Main navigational deflector
  • Ablative hull armour, with the distinctive layered plating carried across the upper and lower surfaces
  • Integrated warp nacelles
  • Bussard collectors
  • Plasma transfer conduits
  • Port and starboard impulse engines
  • Plasma exhaust vents
  • Upper sensor pallet
  • Main bridge
  • Bridge sensors
  • Resupply connectors
  • Forward targetting sensors
  • Aft sensor arrays
  • Transporter emittor pads
  • Fore and aft RCS thrusters
  • Escape-pod hatches
  • Shield grid emitters
  • Defensive shield grid emitters
  • Tractor-beam emitter
  • Navigation lights
  • Deuterium loading ports
  • Nacelle intercoolers
  • Opening shuttlebay with the Chaffee shuttle
  • Detachable forward warhead
  • Warhead/hull interconnect

This reimagined model measures approximately:
38cm (l) x 30cm (w) x 6cm (h) off stand
37cm (l) x 30cm (w) x 21cm (h) on stand

MOC Space tanker

As mankind's footprint expands through space, the support industry required is exponentialy growing and consuming more resources every day. To keep the assembly lines working, to keep producing and building even more than yesterday, the necessary materials need to be transported from mining and refining sites to every plant across space by thousands of cargo ships built for this single purpose. Amongst those, this space tanker is one of the most widely used ships, reliable and easy to build to keep the production rates going up.

Here's my first ever MOC, designed in Stud.io first before buying parts. I learned the SNOT technique with this one, quite a change from the lego kits I used to build 20 years ago ! 366 parts total for a 17 studs long ship, I had fun building it for sure.

It is the first piece of a larger world building project aimed at building the industrial side of mankind's space expansion, the support side almost never showed in scifi. The instructions are on Rebrickable for free if you want to build it, in which case feedback is welcome !

MOC 'Tadpole'-Class Orbital Defense Platform Vessel

A bit spur of the moment, while i'm not entirely satisfied with my result, i might aswell share it and declare it done.

This vessel is intended as a semi-permanent orbital installation, serving as short range patrol and defense unit, able to punch above its relative weight thanks to the coaxially mounted coilgun running the length of the ship, even having the ships primary heatsinks attached along its spine. Augmented by a duo of short-range carronade twin guns, and four CIWS mounts, this specific Tadpole has also further been upgunned by mounting torpedo tubes to the exterior armor.

Build Challenge Entry Stinger Podracer (Build Challenge)

A podracer is technically a space ship, right? This is the P6 “Stinger”, my entry for the July 2026 Build Challenge!

Building this was actually super nostalgic. I had a few insectoid sets, sets 6837 and 6919, as a kid, and I TRIED to use those insect-leg looking pieces in random builds all the time, but they’re so niche they usually just sat in the bin. I basically started this one with wanting to use 6 of those, and built from there.

Lemme know what you think!
