Legal Advice Needed Update: Landlord suddenly sent the electricity bill only after I mentioned legal action. Now he's demanding our copy of the rental agreement before refunding the deposit.

Hi everyone, thanks for all the advice on my previous post. Here's an update.

I vacated my flat in Bengaluru. My landlord deducted painting charges and adjusted the pending rent, so the only amount left to refund is ₹10,000.

For weeks, he kept saying he couldn't refund the deposit because he was waiting for the BESCOM electricity bill. I repeatedly asked him to share the bill so I could pay it immediately, but he never did.

Recently, I told him that I had already spoken to a lawyer regarding the delay. Almost immediately after that, he finally sent me the electricity bill, I paid it the same day, and shared the payment proof.

This has made me wonder whether he genuinely didn't have the BESCOM bill earlier or whether it was just being used as a reason to delay the refund. I obviously can't prove that, but the timing feels odd.

Now there's a new condition.

He says he will hand over the ₹10,000 only if we return our copy of the rental agreement. I checked the agreement carefully, and I couldn't find any clause stating that the tenant must return their copy before the security deposit is refunded. The landlord already has the original signed agreement.

I don't mind cooperating, but I also feel it's reasonable for tenants to keep a copy of a signed agreement as proof of the tenancy and deposit.

My questions are:

Is it normal or legally required in India to return your own copy of a rental agreement to get your security deposit back?

Can a landlord legally withhold a security deposit solely because the tenant wants to keep their copy of the agreement?

If I refuse to return my copy and send a legal notice instead, would that be considered a reasonable step?

Would really appreciate any advice from people who've dealt with similar rental disputes in Bengaluru or elsewhere in India.

Urgent A guy followed me near my society after I refused to give him my number. I'm really shaken.

I'm a 23F currently doing my internship in Pune.

Today, while I was walking back to my flat near my society, a guy stopped me and asked for my phone number. I politely refused multiple times, but he kept insisting. When he realized I wasn't going to give in, he called a few other guys on his phone. I don't know if they were nearby or if he was trying to scare me, but I panicked.

I somehow managed to run into my society before anything else happened. The problem is, I think that guy lives somewhere nearby, which makes me really anxious about going out alone now.

I'm not sure if I'm overreacting, but this genuinely scared me. Has anyone dealt with something similar in Pune? What should I do next? Should I inform my society security or the local police even though nothing physically happened?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Update: I have informed my brother, and we are going to report this incident to the nearest police station.

Legal Advice Needed RBL Bank refused my payment before the gold loan auction, then asked me to buy my own gold back from an outside vendor. Is this legal?

I need genuine legal advice and guidance.

I had a gold loan with RBL Bank, which eventually became an NPA. Before the scheduled auction date, I visited the branch with the intention of paying the entire outstanding amount and closing the loan.

Instead of accepting my payment, the bank employee told me that my account was under a "hold" and, because of that, the loan could not be closed. I was specifically asked to come back after around 10 days.

When I returned as instructed, I was told that my pledged gold had already been auctioned and that nothing could be done.

What happened next shocked me even more.

The same bank employee allegedly advised me to purchase my own gold from an outside vendor by paying additional money outside the bank.

I have video recordings of my conversations with the bank employee. According to my understanding of those recordings, the employee acknowledges that:

I had visited the branch before the auction to close the loan.

I was told the loan could not be closed because of an account hold.

Later, I was advised to buy the gold back from an outside vendor by paying extra money.

I have repeatedly asked the bank for:

Auction Notice

Auction Proceedings

Sale Details

Other auction-related records

However, the bank has not provided these documents.

At this stage, I am considering filing complaints with the RBI Integrated Ombudsman and pursuing legal remedies.

My questions are:

Can a bank refuse to accept repayment before a gold loan auction because of an "account hold"?

Is it lawful for a bank employee to ask a borrower to purchase auctioned gold from an outside vendor?

What legal remedies are available in India in such a situation?

Has anyone experienced something similar?

I am looking for serious legal guidance. Thank you.

Urgent Father is mentally harassing us, Help.

23F, my father is mentally harassing our family through texts. He has a history of mental illness.

He is trying to ruin my mother’s career by sending emails to her colleagues, trying to make it look like my mother is cheating on my father but my mother is a hardworking woman, she has been a professor for nearly 25 years, she has been the sole bread winner.

He texts my mother’s sister and says vile and inappropriate things.

My brother lives in germany with his wife and they are expecting a kid in 2 months but my father has been emailing him, texting him and saying horrible things which is causing stress and anxiety.

my father does not reside with us currently but this is terrorising us and we feel hopeless.

(there is recorded evidence of fights, screenshots of messages, voice notes)
the trauma is 30 years long and my mother cannot take anymore.

What do we do?

Legal Advice Needed Got a Legal Notice From Livpure

Hi everyone,

I rented an RO water purifier from Livpure back in 2023. Recently, I received a legal notice from a law firm demanding an exorbitant amount of money along with the return of the machine.

The issue is that when I wanted to return the RO at the end of my rental period, I repeatedly requested Livpure to arrange a pickup. However, no one ever came to collect it. Instead, I was only harassed with repeated phone calls, and the machine remained with me despite my attempts to return it.

I also want to mention that I no longer have the machine with me.

While searching online, I came across several posts from other people who have received similar legal notices from Livpure or the same law firm, which makes me wonder if this is a common practice.

I’m just a college student and have never dealt with anything like this before. I would really appreciate a proper legal opinion on:
How serious is this notice?

Am I legally liable to pay the amount they’re demanding?
Does the fact that I no longer have the machine change my legal position?
What should my next steps be?
Has anyone here successfully dealt with a similar Livpure issue?

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Legal Advice Needed Husband in Germany wanting divorce but I dont.

My husband is living in Germany (an indian national with blue card)and I am in India. I have a residence permit and it was planned that I would be moving to Germany with him in July 2026. Since we were planning for a family, I underwent a major fertility surgery in March 2026 which has significantly reduced my ovarian reserve and my husband had given his consent for the surgery. My doctors are there to give their statements around his consent. His family has always treated me bad, misbehaved and insulted me for dowry but he has always supported his family. I left my job last month. Few days before his flight, he texted me and my family memers that he has no plan of coming to India and wants divorve and will not be continuing in this marriage. Its been a month and no one including him is answering are calls. They have completely abandoned me. His mother and brother influence him for every decision. My Mil has all my gold. He has left me without a job and a major surgery which will impact my future. Since, I dont want to end this marriage, what support do I have from Indian judiciary?

Legal Advice Needed Max Care Hospital Forcing Patients to Purchase Medicines From Their Pharmacies

My father goes through dialysis multiple times a week. We are not a financially well off family hence we are our medicines and injections from Jan Aushidhi Medical Stores.

Today - the max hospital in IP extension delhi mentioned they will no longer accept injections that doctors has prescribed unless those are purchased from their own hospitals. The injections that normally cost ₹40 are priced at ₹400 in their pharmacies. Worst part my quite a few patients require weekly injections that can cost upto ₹7600 even after discounts which costs ₹12000 in their own pharmacies.

This is really worrying us because we are barely affording the treatment.

What surprises me is that they can deny medicines purchased from licensed pharmacies. I wonder if there is anything that can be done ?

I will be happy to post this in legal/healthcare subreddit if this doesn’t belong here. But I believe this has a wide implications on where healthcare is heading in our nation.

Legal Advice Needed Can police call members of a WhatsApp group and discourage them from joining a peaceful protest?

Recently in Guwahati, a WhatsApp group was created to discuss a proposed protest regarding the NEET paper leak issue. According to several members, police officers have been calling people in the group, asking for their personal details (including addresses), accusing them of “instigating” a protest, and, in at least one reported case, allegedly visiting someone’s house and asking them not to participate in the protest.

Assuming these are genuine police officers, is this legal? Can police ask for personal details over the phone like this, accuse someone of “instigating” a protest merely for being in a discussion group, or discourage people from attending a peaceful protest?

I’m looking for the legal position under Indian law and what rights citizens have in such situations.

Legal Advice Needed Can a Hindu wife get an annulment if the marriage was never consummated due to the husband’s erectile dysfunction?

Posting on behalf of someone I know.

A 21-year-old woman was pressured by her parents into marrying a 31-year-old man. They’ve been married for about 3 months but she stayed hardly for a month at her in laws place and currently living in a PG in another city.

The marriage has never been consummated because the husband has been unable to have sexual intercourse due to erectile dysfunction. He was aware of the issue. Recently, he has started saying that he is “fine now” and claims the problem has been treated, but the wife no longer wants to continue the marriage.

She wants to seek an annulment under Hindu law because the marriage has never been consummated. However, she’s worried that if he denies having ED or claims he has recovered, the court may reject her petition.

A few questions:

Does persistent ED leading to non-consummation qualify as impotence for the purpose of annulment under the Hindu Marriage Act?

If the husband now says he has recovered, does that affect her right to seek annulment?

What kind of evidence is usually important in such cases if the husband denies he had ED?

Has anyone here gone through a similar case or knows how Family Courts generally deal with these situations?

Looking for legal guidance and practical experiences.
Thank you.

Legal Advice Needed How long does a POSH NDA last? Can I talk about it online, including the proceedings? If yes, after how long?

I was sexually harassed by a senior at my university. All the allegations were found to be substantiated, and he was punished. (I'm not fully satisfied with the recommendation, but okay.)

However, this person is predatory. He has harassed multiple girls before. Knowing it makes me want to talk about it even more, people need to know about this. Can I talk about what happened to me, let people know that I filed a complaint, and share what the resolution was? I made a comment on a post, after which I got a warning from my university not to disclose anything.

But for how long? The NDA I signed didn't mention any definite period. Do they expect me to stay silent forever? Why can't I talk about it? What does the law say?

Legal Advice Needed Punjab Sewa Kendra refused my father's caste certificate application because Aadhaar has C/O Son Name instead of C/O Father name . Is this legally correct?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm from Punjab and recently visited a Sewa Kendra with my father to apply for his caste certificate.

We had my father's sister's (my aunt's) caste certificate as supporting proof since we belong to the same family.

The operator checked my father's Aadhaar and pointed out that the address on the back contains:

C/O {MY NAME} (I'm his son)

He said this is not acceptable and that my father should have C/O his own father NAME instead. I respectfully asked if there was any official rule requiring this because, from what I've read on the UIDAI website, the C/O field is part of the address and is optional, and I couldn't find any rule stating that an adult cannot have their son's name in the C/O field.

Instead of explaining the rule, the operator became rude and told me:

So I have a few questions:

  • Is there any UIDAI rule or Punjab Government notification that requires an adult's Aadhaar to have their father's name in the C/O field instead of their son's?
  • Can a Sewa Kendra refuse to accept or process a caste certificate application solely because of the C/O field on Aadhaar?
  • If there is no such rule, what would be the correct way to challenge this? Should I ask for the refusal in writing, approach the SDM/Tehsildar, or file a grievance against the Sewa Kendra?

I'm looking for legal or administrative guidance rather than opinions. If anyone has dealt with a similar issue or knows the applicable rules, I'd really appreciate your help.

Thank For Reading

Update Has the DPDP Act changed how your organization handles customer data?

Upvotes

With the DPDP Act now in focus, we're curious about how businesses are preparing in practice.

Some questions we're hearing often are:

Are companies conducting data audits yet?

Who is responsible for handling customer data requests?

Have privacy policies and consent mechanisms actually been updated?

Are SMEs treating this as a priority, or waiting until enforcement becomes stricter?

For professionals working in legal, IT, compliance, HR, healthcare, finance, or startups:

What's been the biggest challenge in preparing for DPDP compliance?

We're interested in hearing real experiences—whether you've started implementing changes, are still figuring things out, or think the compliance burden is being overestimated.

Let's discuss practical challenges and solutions.

Legal Advice Needed Stridhan rejected by family court

Upvotes

After nearly 5 years of fighting in Family Court, I finally received my ex parte divorce. It has been a long and emotionally exhausting journey.

My ex-husband and in-laws took all of my gold (stridhan) and also misused my credit cards. Despite presenting my case, the court rejected my claim for the return of my stridhan.

I'm grateful that one chapter has finally ended, but it's heartbreaking that justice feels incomplete. Has anyone else gone through something similar? Were you able to recover your stridhan through an appeal or any other legal remedy? Any advice or shared experiences would mean a lot.

Legal Advice Needed Distributor (AfrobeatsDistro / Jungle Entertainment Ventures) is letting a fake-label account steal my music and claim my own uploads. No response after a week. Advice?

Someone reuploaded three of my original songs on YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music under an account impersonating a major label (not naming it, it'd make my songs searchable). Fake account, barely any subscribers, obviously not the real thing. All three are distributed through AfrobeatsDistro, run by The Jungle Recording Company / Jungle Entertainment Ventures.

Then the same account filed Content ID claims on two of my own original uploads and blocked monetization on them. So now I'm disputing claims against my own channel filed by the people who stole from me.

I've done the usual: YouTube copyright complaints, Content ID disputes, reports to Spotify and Apple Music. I've also emailed AfrobeatsDistro and Jungle's support three times over three days asking them to act and asking what their dispute process even is. Total silence.

YouTube won't remove the videos either, since it came through a "partner" distributor, so it's on me to resolve it with them first, and they're not answering.

Has anyone dealt with AfrobeatsDistro or Jungle before? Is there any actual way to make an unresponsive distributor act, or escalate past them? DistroKid and TuneCore both have a real DMCA process, this one doesn't seem to. Would take any advice at this point.

Legal Advice Needed Please help me with this consumer court case thing

Hi everyone,
I’m a college student, and this is the first time I’ve ever had to consider taking legal action against a company. I’m currently dealing with a consumer dispute involving my scooter, and after months of trying to get it resolved through customer support and the service center, I’m planning to send a legal notice and, if needed, approach the Consumer Commission.
I have no legal background, so I wanted to ask people here who’ve been through this process. Is it practical to file a consumer case without hiring a lawyer? How long do these cases usually take? If the company suddenly offers a repair after receiving the legal notice, can I still pursue a refund if I’ve genuinely lost confidence in the product?
I’d also appreciate any advice on common mistakes to avoid, documents I should keep ready, or anything you wish you had known before filing your first consumer case.
Thanks in advance I’d really appreciate any guidance.

Legal Advice Needed [19f] Father's is going to file a case in my name. What should I do?

Upvotes

My father has been cheating on my mother since 2024. But we couldn't take any legal actions against him. Last year, on May 2025, my father served my mother with divorce papers. My father completely stopped giving anything to my mother. Since the day of her marriage (20 years of marriage since 2006) my mother has never ever earned as she has been a homemaker for years. Our father is our sole provider. And he did pay for my education and also for my younger brother but even refuses to buy adequate amount of groceries for us and doesn't even buy us daily basic needs like clothes or even books anymore. I just passed out 12th in the year 2025 and tool one year coaching for NEET, he did pay for me at that time but till then my mom didn't get a single penny from him. And due to NEET paper leak, my ReNEET didn't go as planned. Then I took admission in an engineering college. The admission was only about 18,500 rupees and he refused to pay for it. Then I approached the police and they helped me get the money for admission. My mother has a pending maintenance case and the court is yet to take action, it's been a year and the case is stagnant. So, the lawyer asked us to go ahead and file a complaint in the police against my father for some allowance until the court gives us maintainence. We did go to police but they didn't accept the case and told us to refer to family court. I understand that it's not in the hands of the police. And then at the end of the month, he only bought us groceries and didn't even pay any bills; no electricity, no wifi, nothing. And he only sent my minor brother his tuition fees and I didn't get any money as monthly allowance for commute. I go to my college with an e-rickshaw as it's a bit far and it takes about 100 rupees everyday. So, I asked for 3000 rupees per month. When he refused to send money, I wrote "Ugly pig, heartless monster and son of a b*tch" to him. I know it's wrong but this is the same father who denied to give me my admission fee and told me directly to "sell him" for my admission fee (he wrote "Who are you" to me when he was refusing me admission money). And now, he's going to file a "harassment case" on me. I know that as a financially dependent person the court will themselves give me some aid in order to get myself a lawyer but I really don't want to fall in such tense situation. I'm preparing for NEET again and am not ready for such bullshit. My parents' divorce case was filed under Hindu Marriage Act and I still haven't received my notice yet so, I don't know under what he filed my case. I'm feeling devastated. Please, what should I do? I've a whole future ahead. I am sorry I wrote him that, I didn't know it will turn out this badly. Also, I'm from Assam. So, any lawyers from Assam please help me.

Legal Advice Needed Will consenting to an Australian divorce make me legally divorced in India?

Upvotes

I am a 30-year-old Indian citizen. I got married in India under the Christian Marriage Act to my wife, who is an Australian citizen.

After our marriage, we lived together in Australia for a few months but have been separated for more than 12 months. She has now filed for divorce in Australia and I have been served the divorce papers. There are no disputes between us, and I am willing to consent to the divorce.

My concern is whether consenting to the Australian divorce will make me legally divorced in India as well.

I've consulted a few lawyers in India, and they've told me that even if both parties mutually agree to the divorce in Australia, I may still not be considered divorced under Indian law because the marriage was solemnized in India.

The additional complication is that my wife and I are not in contact. If I consent to the Australian divorce and later discover that I need separate divorce proceedings in India, I may not be able to obtain her cooperation or signatures for a mutual consent divorce in India.

My questions are:

  1. If I consent to the Australian divorce proceedings, will India recognize the Australian divorce decree?

  2. If India does not automatically recognize it, what options would I have if my wife is unwilling or unavailable to participate in divorce proceedings in India?

  3. Has anyone gone through an Australia–India divorce where the marriage took place in India and successfully relied on the Australian divorce decree in India?

  4. Would I need to file a separate case in India despite both parties agreeing to the divorce in Australia?

  5. If I want to remarry in India in the future, would the Australian divorce decree alone be sufficient?

I'm concerned about consenting to the Australian divorce only to find out later that I'm still considered married under Indian law and have no practical way to obtain my wife's cooperation for separate proceedings in India.

Any advice or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated.

Need Help (on behalf of a friend)

Im speaking on behalf of a friend from Jaipur. I have never been there nor i know anything much about the city. She comes from a really shitty and agressive conservative family. She had an intimate relationship with her ex. Now he blackmails her regularly to make her do stuff. Once she almost un@lived herself. But due to the fear of her family she never let them know what was the reason. Im really scared for her. Tomorrow he says he wants to meet her near a hotel and if not, he will release all the intimate stuff to her family. And also he's very abusive and might hurt her. My brain is not working nor do i know anyone from jaipur. If we report to police her family gets involved and they'll make life hell sooner or later. I just need ppl who could atleast force him to delete stuff so that any further option could be considered. Also she tried a helpline at her rock bottom who treated it very casually and eventually ghosted her.

Update Filed a Consumer Complaint on e-Jagriti against Tata CLiQ (empty package received) — sharing full process for anyone facing similar issues

Posting this mainly for anyone dealing with an e-commerce non-delivery dispute and unsure how far they can escalate without a lawyer.

Background: Ordered a Ray-Ban sunglasses (₹11,040) via Tata CLiQ. Delivered package had the box, case, cloth, and booklets — but not the actual sunglasses. Had a full unboxing video as evidence.

Company’s response: Rejected the claim citing an internal “ground investigation,” but never produced any actual evidence (warehouse footage, courier weight logs, etc.) to counter the video. Their Legal Escalations team later acknowledged a formal Legal Notice and promised a response in 7 working days — never followed up.

Escalation path I used (in order):
Legal Notice under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 — served on both the platform (Tata Unistore Ltd.) and the seller (Moda Optics Pvt. Ltd.)

CPGRAM grievance against the company via the Dept. of Consumer Affairs / CCPA category

National Consumer Helpline (1915) complaint

Direct email to the company’s CEO after lower-level escalation stalled

Finally filed a Consumer Complaint on e-Jagriti (the NCDRC’s new unified portal, replacing eDaakhil) — District Commission, Hyderabad, since that’s my residence/delivery jurisdiction

Documents e-Jagriti required for a “Consumer Complaint” filing:
Index

Proforma for Filing Consumer Complaint

Memo of Parties

Synopsis with List of Dates and Events

Complaint (numbered paragraphs + prayer) with a notarised affidavit — this needs to be physically printed, signed in front of a notary (I used ₹20 stamp paper, though plain paper is also technically acceptable), and then scanned back in as a PDF

Annexures (invoices, screenshots, email correspondence, proof of the other complaints filed)

Cost: Just the stamp paper + notary charges (~₹150-200 total). No court fee was charged at this stage for a claim under this value bracket, and I filed as party-in-person (no advocate, so no Vakalatnama needed).

Where I am now: Got a case reference number, submitted to Hyderabad District Commission, waiting on it to be formally “admitted” before an actual CC number is assigned and notices go out to the opposite parties.

Happy to share more specifics on the drafting/formatting if it helps anyone navigating e-Jagriti for the first time — the portal itself isn’t very intuitive and I couldn’t find much updated guidance online for it.

Text Written By Claude Ai
