๐Ÿ›๏ธ Politics The absolute scam of phone Gemrok in Lebanon: $242 on a phone? How is this not causing public outrage?

My cellular service was just cut off because of the unregistered IMEI, so I called LibanPost to figure out the Gemrok. I was completely shocked when they told me the fee for my iPhone 16 Pro Max (256GB) is $242 (almost two years old phone as of July 2026)

The official customs duty is supposed to be 5% plus VAT, but a $242 tax means they are valuing the phone at $4,840. The phone costs nowhere near that todayโ€”it's worth around $800โ€“$900. I am literally being forced to pay roughly 30% of its current market price just to be able to use cellular service!

When I tried to clarify how they calculated this amount, LibanPost washed their hands and blamed the Ministry of Telecommunications. However, they know a big chunk of that total is clearly a hidden LibanPost service fee stacked on top.

I asked about paying directly at the airport mail post to bypass them, but LibanPost denied any connection, they acted as if they had no idea and there is no phone number or way to inquire about that process either.

It feels like a complete setup to force us to pay whatever arbitrary number they pull out of thin air. How is this even possible, and why isn't it causing massive public outrage? Has anyone managed to dispute these numbers, or are we just trapped paying it?

๐Ÿ“• History Question about daily life during the civil war

I'm Brazilian (no Lebanese ancestry however even if it's common here) and I've been reading about the Lebanese civil war, one thing that confuses me is that the Lebanese government seemed almost like a third party or non entity in it's own conflict, it never got or was attempted to be overthrown until Aoun was appointed PM by Amine, the factions still used the pound afaik, they apparently even used schools and hospitals, I think notaries also functioned too? So I'm curious, how did life in the ground work? I assume if it did exist it was minor but it's interesting that the Lebanese government still tried to project itself nationwide and militias sometimes let them, what did government presence and remaining services amount to? What else did you have to rely on the militia for?, one thing I wonder is if the government ever tried collecting taxes, I don't mean from most of the population obviously, but for businesses who tried to have intentional legitimacy, did they keep registering copyrights and trademarks? Sorry for the many questions but I hope to learn a little bit at least.

๐Ÿ’ผ Career I'm considering moving to Lebanon but have some questions about the work force

TLDR: are there engineer jobs in manufacturing industry in Lebanon for people with limited language ability

Hi, I'm Irish and lately have been wanting to move away for personal reasons. I had spent a couple months in Lebanon a while back and really loved my time there, the people and the culture are both beautiful so it's on the list.

I have spent my entire adult life working in manufacturing as a mechanical engineer with a strong CV and experience both as a technician, getting my hands dirty physically working on maintenance and machine development and also in the more technical, analytical side of things working on research and development for industry.

I have fluent English, around B1 level MSA and maybe B2 level French.

Would I be able to find a job with a relatively fine standard of living? I don't need to be wealthy but I'd like to be able to pay rent and afford my groceries as well as maybe a night out every now and then.

Additional, I don't mind having to live in a major city but I would much prefer to live in either rural areas or even cities with less than 100,000 like aley or jbeil, is this a possibility given the conditions I outlined?

Thank you for any help you can offer

Edit: I also hold a PADI scuba license and can weld quite well if that would effect your answer at all

๐Ÿ’ญ Discussion Curious if anyone else feel like dating apps have convinced us they're the only way to meet people or I'm just looking in the wrong places ๐Ÿคฃ

I don't even hate the idea of them, but the constant swiping, ghosting, and trying to judge someone in a few seconds just feels like an exhausting side hustle.

At the same time, meeting people naturally isn't exactly easy anymore either (i guesss). Unless your friends/colleagues introduce you to someone, where are people actually meeting each othersss .What has worked for y'all ?

๐Ÿ’ป Tech Helping my fellow Lebanese find a roomie! (Repost)

Had to repost, my previous link was broken, embarrassing lmao.

Anyway, I created an application for Lebanese who seek to find roommates in differents parts of Lebanon in hopes to reduce rent pressure, I've had many friends need something similar and always post on social media with no luck.

I hope this solves a problem, or maybe pushes someone to make something better?
It's free, no money needed, no ads, it's just a test environment for now if anyone would like to test the android version in the QR code. Passwordless login, so your code might be in JUNK folder.

for people who hate scanning QR codes (I understand, I feel the same way), here's a direct link to download the APK:
https://expo.dev/accounts/kman996/projects/roomie/builds/76d99883-d9a6-4947-bcec-a06766cdc81b

I cannot share the iOS one yet as I'm waiting on Apple to approve my dev account.

So I'd appreciate if you go through the full workflow and test it out.

I'm planning on making this application completely free, and adding some rating system for abusers + ID verification thats more thorough.

I do not own an android device (and didnt use an emulator yet), so I haven't tested it on one yet, any errors/feedback would be appreciated alot.

Thanks :)

๐Ÿ’ญ Discussion Salary

Hi. Iโ€™m a diaspora Lebanese. Thinking on getting a remote job so I can move to Lebanon and reconnect with my family roots. How much is needed to live a normal life in Lebanon in USD? Not expecting a luxurious life. Something more realistic, enough to live there for a while and experience Lebanon. Thanks

๐Ÿ“• History In 1948 after IOF terrorists r-ped & murdered 3 Palestinian women & one 15 year old girl and then destroyed the Palestinian town of Hunin - some survivors found refuge in the nearby Lebanese village of Hula. Now Hula had been completely destroyed by present-day apartheid Israel, just like Hunin was.

In the history of mid-century American design, studio furniture makers generally divided into two camps: those who prioritized experimental art, and those who focused on functional production. Sam Maloof managed to bridge this divide.

๐Ÿ“ฐ News A small but promising step: A joint statement by MMFD, Lana and VLF proposing alternative policies

A joint statement by Citizens in a State, Lana, and the VLF Association of the Lebanese Community in France rejects the framework agreement and puts forward three points:

  1. A genuine ceasefire, an unconditional withdrawal from all Lebanese territory, and justice for every Lebanese victim, for sovereignty is inviolable
  2. Strengthening the Lebanese Army so it can protect all Lebanese territory, including national service, Hezbollah handing its weapons and the State's monopoly of arms
  3. Establishing the legitimacy of a civil state that neither imposes nor prevents sectarian affiliation on anyone, thereby protecting Lebanon from the rise of identity-based and racist rhetoric surrounding it

This step, though small, is promising for two reasons: First, it marks a shift from rejection to proposing an alternative, even if only in broad terms. Second, it brings together parties that were at odds with one another during the Beirut municipal elections but now agree on these proposals. This step needs to expand and more political parties and deputies should join calling for these steps.
