A few years ago I visited Aruba and Curaçao. I fell in love with the islands, the people and the culture.

When I got home, I wanted to learn Papiamento so I could connect even more with the local community on my next visit. To my surprise, I couldn't find an app that made learning Papiamento simple, modern and enjoyable.

So I decided to build one myself.

Today, PapiaDaily is live on Google Play. 🎉

The app helps you learn Papiamento through daily lessons, quizzes and practical vocabulary. And yes, the lessons are written in Papiamento itself, so you're learning the language the way it's actually used.

This is only the first version, and I want to make it better with every update.

Hello! I’ve written an abc book in English/Papiamento with a friend that is local to Aruba. I’m looking for an Aruban translator/linguist to review for accuracy. I have by far asked at least 7 native speakers to explain to me what the effing hell is the deal with stress in Papiamentu and nobody seems to get what I mean.

So, I have so far identified that 2-syllable verbs in Papiamentu are very particular as they (a) don’t seem to follow accentuation rules or (b) native speakers just randomly put the stress of words wherever they want.

Let me explain:

Verbs like haña, buska, pidi, manda, purba. All of these are 2-syllable verbs that should NOT take an accent in the second-to-last syllable if that is were the stress were to go. However, most often than not, native speakers pronounce these verbs, manera:

haña -> haaaÑA
pidi -> piiiDI
buska -> buuusKA
manda -> maaanDA

Here, the capital letters indicate stress and the multiple vowels represent a perceived (by me) longer duration of those second-to-last syllable.

First question: is this the case? Do 2-syllable words have this particular pitch to them that makes them special? If the answer is NO, then does this mean the stress ALWAYS goes on the second-to-last syllable?

To further reinforce the two-syllable verb theory: I can bring up examples of verbs of more than three syllables, like kuminsá, somentá, partisipá, etc. All of them are verbs in their infitive form that ALWAYS (actually, regardless of them acting as verbs or past participles, that is, sinta vs sintá etc) ALWAYS get an accent on the last syllable as per Papiamentu accentuation rules.

So, what’s the deal with the pitch/stress in these verbs? Are they indeed special?

If two-syllable verbs indeed have a special rhythm to how they are pronounced (and the stress DOES go on the last syllable [haaaÑA, buuuusKA examples], how would they be different from the past participles of these verbs in terms of pronunciation? (Hañá, sintá, pidí, etc.)

I work for a small, non-profit museum in a US city hosting matches for the 2026 World Cup. My boss, in a last minute decision considering the World Cup is so soon, asked me to design multilingual 'welcome' banners for our international guests and source the translations. They can’t afford 40+ translators and thought Google Translate/AI would suffice “since it’s just one word”

I oppose using Google Translate due to its errors and the delicacy of language. Though not multilingual, I’m passionate about this project and want to be careful & respectful in my translation research. I don’t want to offend anyone, as I’ve seen many examples of multilingual welcome signs with mistranslations, incorrect tenses, latinized versions of non-Latin scripts, the wrong use of welcome, etc.

I’m asking for help verifying the Papiamento translation of welcome, as in the context of a polite, friendly, and formal greeting for someone arriving at a place. I’m looking for the welcome one might find displayed in airports, hotels, etc. I want to ensure I am using the correct writing system/script for each language, including details such as accents, capitalization, and punctuation.

I understand that welcome greetings can vary depending on the context, whether or not to use a plural version of a phrase, etc. It seems likely that some cultures and their language(s) may not share the same concept of being welcomed into a space as we do in English/the US. I want to be mindful of things like this.

The languages from Portugal, Spain & Italy have in common the utilization of localization adverbs to communicate via a similar scale of distance that something is somewhere in space & time:

Italiano: Qui, qua, quivi/ivi/vi, lì, là, e colà.

The Hispanic versions have an initial letter "a" for some interesting reason:

Español: Aquí, acá, ahí, allí, allá, y acullá.

The Portuguese versions are a mix of the Italian versions with the Hispanic versions for some interesting reason:
