Why is everyone at Jamaica so inconsiderate?

Today the train was late and the transfer to ronkonkoma ended up three minutes early which meant that I had to haul ass to get to those stairs and get over from track 1 to track 8 and tell me why there are several people going up the MIDDLE OF THE STAIRCASE WITH THEIR SUITCASE. Then some lady has the audacity to get upset at me for accidentally bumping into her while she’s standing in the middle of the top of the staircase where everyone is trying to go because he was checking something on her phone. Just a frustrated long islander who works in the Bronx and uses public transport and doesn’t want to spend an extra 40 minutes waiting for another transfer because some lady and some people with suitcases decided that they needs an entire staircase to themself. Happy Wednesday!

No $8 charge for me...

A few times now I've bought a ticket and forgot to activate it until the conductor comes along.

"oh snap! I forgot to activate this?! Sorry, my bad.."

Conductor shrugs, scans, and moves on. Not once have I received a notification or charge on my accounts.

Do the conductors have some autonomy over who gets dinged?

LIRR Day Pass Expired After About 2 Hours? Did I do something wrong?

Post image
22 Upvotes

Hi all!

I purchased a day pass at 11pm on July 21 for a 6:26am train from Valley Stream to Atlantic Terminal the next day (July 22nd).

When I pulled up the ticket on the train, I was surprised to see it missing. It was under the "Past" tab and labeled as used. See screenshot.

I'm not sure if i missed something! I'm flabbergasted why its no longer valid after 2 hours.

Medical

So I have my medical coming up for the railroad for a MofE Electrician position.
What does the physical test usually consist of? Is it anything really strenuous? I heard it may involve lifting around 70 lbs and stepping over the third rail or similar tasks.
If anyone has been through it, I’d appreciate hearing what the physical exam was actually like. I’d appreciate any input! I know there isn’t much information out there since it seems pretty lowkey.

Does anyone who works for the LIRR or in general if LIRR will be hiring train crews anytime soon? Specifically conductors and engineers?

Track worker

I applied to Track Worker in February, I recently got asked if I wanted to be an alternate for the August 5th class. I did my medical today and that should be the last step. Is anybody else in the hiring process for this upcoming class ?

Checking tix before you get to the platform.

Today I got to Penn for the 4:00 Ronkonkoma train and they wouldn’t let you down the stairs until you showed your ticket. Does anyone know if this is supposed to be permanent?

ETA:

Seeing that this is normal. Usually I enter on the Moynihan side and not always during PM peak hours. Yesterday I entered from the 7th Ave escalator side. Just need to make sure if I do that again I have my monthly out of my bag so I don’t hold up the line. Thanks!

LIRR weekend chaos during summer season

Can anyone explain why the LIRR decides to use the summer season to do alot of weekend maintenance? It is the summer season where weekend ridership is higher than spring, fall and winter is that correct?

Teen child tickets

I’m a teenager but it is expensive to pay 10 usd for a ticket for me. Can I use the family ticket and sit next to a random adult?

The child tickets only apply to age 12, and I don’t want to get a penalty.

Taking up two spots in the morning rush hour. This lot is full by 730 because LIRR has taken over the end of the lot for a construction project for the past two years and that will start anytime now. They could park there but that would mean they have to walk 50 extra feet and we cannot be asking them to do that. Could we?

Why does everyone take multiple seats

As the title says. Even the city trains have better etiquette when it comes to seating.

Everyone on the LIRR has to take 2 seats. Why don’t they just use the goddam storage above their heads.

Lost Headphones

Hello everyone, I found someone's airpods on the 8:01 from Grand Central in Car 3 of Six. No identifying marks on it. I'll probably leave it with the MTA lost and found.

Edit: The owner managed to track them down and we had an amicable exchange. https://imgur.com/a/55PHvVF

PS: I don't own an iPhone so I had no way of connecting to said headphones to find any info about the owner

Nutty woman on Babylon Line

Just here to vent for a moment…

I get on my 8:12 train at RVC to GC. Train is short cars (as usual lately), so we’re jamming in. I get stuck standing next to the door. I’ll preface this with the door is literally the last place I want to stand on the train.

About a minute or two before we get to Jamaica, an older woman (petite, light colored hair, very tan leathery skin, cigarette voice & cigarette in hand) gets up and asks those of us by the door if we’re all getting off at Jamaica. Me and another guy say no. The woman starts yelling at us and rants about how it’s common sense to not block the door, how people no longer have courtesy, how that all went out the door after COVID, etc. I try to explain to her that while we’re not getting off the stop, per the norm we will get off the train to let people off - another guy tells me it’s not worth engaging with her - and he was right, because she just kept going on and began pointing to imaginary spots on the train where this hoard of people should be standing instead of by the door. I stop engaging but she has close to a dozen people laughing or going back at her now. Two-three minutes pass, we stop at Jamaica, those of us by the door get off the train to clear space, she makes one more disrespectful remark and she dashes off.

The most perplexing part to me is, do people actually view standing next to the door (if you’re not getting off the train) as disrespectful? It’s literally the last place on the train I want to stand…and I will gladly swap with somebody who has a seat if they feel that way…

Oh and if this woman sounds like somebody you know, or possibly your mother / grandmother, I think it’s time to get her checked out….

Anyway, thank you all for the space to rant, happy Thursday! lol

Trashy behavior

I'm one who complains about how dirty LIRR trains are, clearly because they are not frequently or thoroughly cleaned for their level of use, but this is also a people problem. It doesn't take a lot of effort to take your garbage with you. Leaving trash on the seats, or putting bottles and cans on the floor knowing they would tip over, is very common. Why do this?
