Discussion Just started: “LET’S GET BACK TO THE PARTY” by Zack Salih

IT IS 2015, weeks after the Supreme Court marriage equality ruling. A high school art history teacher, Sebastian Mote envies his queer students and their freedom to live openly the youth he lost to fear and shame. When he runs into his childhood friend Oscar Burnham at a wedding in Washington, DC, he can't help but see it as a second chance. Now thirty-five, the men haven't seen each other in more than a decade. But Oscar has no interest in their shared history, nor in the sense of belonging Sebastian craves. Instead, he's outraged by what he sees as the death of gay culture: bars overrun with bachelorette parties, friends coupling off and having babies. For Oscar, conformity isn't peace, it's surrender.
While Oscar and Sebastian struggle to find their place in a rapidly changing world, each is drawn into a cross-generational friendship that treads the line between envy and obsession: Sebastian with one of his students, Oscar with an older icon of the AIDS era. And as they collide again and again, both men must reckon not just with each other but with themselves. Provocative, moving, and rich with sharply drawn characters, Let's Get Back to the Party introduces an exciting and contemporary new talent.

ISO Finished Green Creek series and ISO the same vibe.

I just finished the Green Creek series by
TJ Klune, and I'm honestly distraught. The blues hit me hard. Much harder than after past reads.
I've hit that point where I'm not sure I'm ready to dive into another series, but part of me is craving something that fills the same space. What I loved most about Green Creek was the sense of pack/ brotherhood, the queer love, the smal town closeness. TJ Klune does gay male romance so well, with all the little emotional details other authors sometimes miss. So, i guess this is my roundabout way of asking for book recommendations that might give me the same vibe or feeling as The Green Creek Series.

Promo Looking For Beta Readers [MM Romance] I Love You, Chase Graves

I'm currently looking for some beta readers for a new project of mine called I Love You, Chase Graves.

The word count is 34, 071 and 109 pages.

Blurb: Luke Moore prides himself on his dedication to his work, so when Chase Graves is hired and then assigned to him without the appropriate qualifications, Luke makes an assumption that turns out to be correct about Chase’s father. Now stuck with the boy, who refuses to do his work and acknowledge Luke in a professional manner, he’s become easily frustrated. His frustrations hit an all time high when Chase invites himself to lunch with Luke and his partner, Oliver, after a pissing match between Chase and Oliver. Luke decides he’s had enough. Someone needs to punish Chase for his inappropriate behaviour, and that man will be Luke.

Content Warnings: explicit open door, daddy kink w/ no age play, impact play (spanking). Also, one of the MCs is trans, and their bottom anatomy is referred to as a cock, front hole, and back hole. There is no PIV, and the trans MC is the top in the relationship and never experiences any penetration.

Looking for: general feedback mainly, pointing out if there are any glaring errors, if the story is entertaining or if it's a bit boring or falling flat. Or how the flow, pacing and whether the story is readable. Honestly, any input would be amazing!

Timeline: Ideally within a month or sooner.

Please dm me if interested, or would like a sample of the writing before for committing.

Thank you and I appreciate your time!

ISO MM Thriller/Horror

I just finished the first three books in the Slasherverse series by Matthew R Corr, and I really enjoyed them. Other than the fear that the LI was going to die every book, and the same “one person left to collect the necklace” ending of the first two books, I didn’t hate it. Some people say the writing is bad but I, as someone with a very vague imagination found it easy to imagine and follow.

I’m looking for more Thrillers/Horrors with romance to broaden my horizons and get back into my heart attack days (I do not handle scary stuff well).

Murder Mysteries are also welcome, the {Madison Square Murders by C.S Poe} are some of my favorites so anything along those lines would be great.

Thanks and Happy Reading!!!

Promo Looking for Beta readers who are interested in literary Sci-Fi with angsty M/M Romance

Hi everyone,

I'm a Chinese web novel writer, and I'm currently translating one of my completed novels into English. It has a small but dedicated readership back in China (around 10,000 subscribers), but it's definitely not a typical fast-paced web novel. It's slower, heavier, and a lot more focused on characters development than plot twists, so I've always been curious whether it would resonate more with readers outside of China.

I'm looking for a few beta readers who think they might enjoy something with:

  • Adult male protagonists
  • A dark/military sci-fi setting
  • Characters dealing with deep trauma
  • Themes of sacrifice, identity, and self-destructive heroism
  • A slow-burn M/M relationship that's loving but also complicated and at times unhealthy
  • Lots of yearning

I've translated the first chapter as a sample and will post it below. If you end up wanting to know what happens next, I'd love to hear from you. If you're interested in beta reading as I continue translating, feel free to leave a comment or send me a DM.

I genuinely want honest feedback on things like prose (especially whether it sounds natural to a native English speaker), pacing, clarity, characterization, and whether the story keeps you wanting to read.

Thanks for reading!

----

Chapter 1

The corridor stretched ahead, vast and dim, like a suffocating throat leading toward a towering gate of black iron. Through the slits, one could make out the world beyond: scorched sand under a merciless sun, the distant roar of the stands. But inside, there was only silence - a pressure that bores down from every side.

Thousands stood here, each trapped in a meter-wide square of pulsing blue light. The blue glow rose and fell like slow breathing. With every pulse, shadows emerged from the darkness before sinking back into it.

They were young and old, male and female, tall and short, but everyone was coiled tight, every gaze locked forward. Some stared at the gate; others flicked their eyes sideways, wary, hungry. The air was thick with breath and body heat, so close you could hear the rasp of another’s lungs, smell the salt rising from their skin.

… Just like beasts waiting in the dark, caged just behind the gate.

Eugene stood among them, still and composed. In a sea of hulking frames, his moderate build and restrained motion made him invisible. He was a shadow folded into the center of the beast-pack, indistinct from the rest.

In Verdane, capital of the Alliance, no event was more sacred or more brutal than the Crucible. Every three years, tens of thousands fought with cold steel until sixty-four remained; from there, single combat until one victor stood. The winner’s wish was granted - wealth, pardon, nobility - so long as no one is harmed directly.

Today was the opening slaughter.

The arena rose from the desert like a fortress. As the countdown burned across the sky, the crowd’s roar died. Tens of thousands on the stands fell silent; billions watching from afar held their breath. From beneath the outer ring, weapon racks ascended in silence. Blades caught the sun, forming a cold, glittering halo around the sand.

Silence hung over the arena. Then the whistle tore through it.

Twelve gates opened at once.

Bodies surged forward in chaos, limbs, breath, motion colliding. From above, they looked like an ant colony spilled across the sand, scattering, merging, and then -
a single drop of red bloomed on the ground. At first, it was nothing more than a pinprick stain on sunlit sand, like ink drop on white paper. Then it spread, and with it came sound - shouts, screams, the ragged, tearing rhythm of violence.

The offering had begun.

Eugene did not run.

The light outside was sharp, almost white. He walked at a steady pace, letting his eyes adjust, feeling the heat settle across his skin. Around him, people raced past, some silent, some screaming. Sound shaped less by words than by pure, animal urgency.

The killing had started before the gates fully rose. Bodies hit the ground, shoved aside or cut down in the rush.

Eugene weaved between them, eyes fixed on a rack where a pair of recurved combat blades still waited. Fighters struck ahead, he could hear screams rising and falling, some cut short, others ringing long and high-pitched. He quietly moved through it all.

A figure lunged from behind. Without turning, Eugene shifted, driving his elbow into the attacker’s chest. The man buckled. Eugene caught his arm, stepped forward, and threw him across his shoulder into the sand.

It happened in a breath. The attacker’s dagger remained in his hand, never lifted.

As the man tried to rise, Eugene stepped on his throat. A sharp crack. Eugene bent down, took the daggers, and slid them behind his waist.

When he straightened, another man stood before him, with the pair of blades in hand. The man was small, eyes wide with a madness edged in fear, mouth half-open, as if caught between steeling himself and flinching.

Eugene glanced at the racks - empty now - then back at the man.

“Can I have those blades, please?” he asked, calm and flat.

The man screamed and threw himself at Eugene.

Tens of thousands fought in the Crucible. Even if one died every second, it would last for hours. The arena became a grinding machine, slow and exacting. Some tried to surrender; many were killed before they could signal to do so. With every passing minute, as blood soaked deeper into the sand, the cheers grew louder, stranger. Some wicked ecstasy was brewing in the air. The audience willingly indulged in it.

Among it all, Eugene began to stand out.

He held two curved blades in reverse grip. Skin stained with blood, black curls wet and matted at his temples. His amber eyes half-lidded, unreadable.

When no one approached, he stood motionless. When someone did, he moved, fast, precise, without pause. One step, one strike. No follow-up needed. There was no rage, no show.

Only clarity between cuts.

Those who knew how to see it could tell this wasn’t brawling. Instead, it was execution. The knife work, clean, practiced and silent, could only come from the military’s deepest shadows.

One by one, the other contenders began to hesitate. Eugene stood alone in the center of a growing ring of empty space. Around him, blood soaked the sand in a widening circle.

He looked up toward the stands. He didn’t expect to find the face he was searching for - not in that distance. But he knew they were watching. And by standing there, like this, they would know he was looking for them.

When the round ended, the names of the final sixty-four lit up across the sky in projections, each paired with a wish.

When Eugene’s name appeared, the crowd erupted.

Eugene Palmer.

Wish: to grant Shaw the same right to live as a human.

The cheers quickly gave away to questions:

“Eugene Palmer? Hold on… wasn't he here a decade ago?”

 “No way…”

“He’s doing this again? Is he out of his mind?”

 “That’s crazy.”

“He was nineteen back then, right? Doesn't that make him over thirty?”

“What’s with his wish? Who the heck is Shaw?”

“Shaw? Isn’t that his lover?”

“Apparently he’s in love with a Companion Synth.”

"He's trying to get a Synth legal rights."

“Damn…that’s some romantic shit.”

“What's with people falling for synths these days?”

The crowd buzzed with speculation. Much of it was true - Shaw was indeed a Companion class Synthetic, and this wasn’t Eugene’s first Crucible.

But calling Shaw his lover wasn’t right. Shaw wasn’t his. And a companion Synth, by design, could not love anyone except their registered owner.

So even if they kissed, even if they touched - whatever might have existed between them, it definitely wasn’t love.

“You keep saying you don't love him, but you'd die for him?” Joshua had asked once, his expression a mix of mockery and disbelief.

Eugene had answered, simply, “I’m willing to.”

If he didn’t enter the Crucible, Shaw would be decommissioned by the Academy in three days. Not a single trace would be left behind by that quiet, kind, abandoned synth.

Eugene didn’t quite like that ending.

So he offered his life instead. For even the faintest chance Shaw might continue to live.

Promo The Masquerade: The Angel and The Sparrow

M/M F.E. Feeley Jr.

Description: In an alternate Gilded Age where Queen Victoria's empire rebuilt America in gaslight and gears, Artesian rose as the world's most beautiful city - and its most dangerous.
Everyone here participates in the game: for power, for survival.
When a grieving young man becomes the obsession of the city's most notorious criminal, this steampunk reimagining of The Phantom of the Opera asks: what happens when everyone wears a mask?
In Artesian, love isn't just forbidden.
It's fatal.

I've loved The Phantom of the Opera since the time my mom brought home the highlights of the stage production on CD. I had no idea what was going on, but the music was so inviting, so thrilling, that I was swept away in the score and in the lyrics. Over the years I've read Gaston Leroux's original story as well as Susan Kay's Phantom novel - both of which are magnificent.

Yet, it bugged me, and I think it bugged me for the very same reason why "kill your gays" bugs me. His end was already set in stone because he was born "wrong."

So, I reimagined it with men, steampunked it, set it in an alternate universe, put everyone in masks, and made the love interest blind. Simple, right? HA!

Handicapping myself this way, I am exploring the characters in depth and diving deep into the heart of why Erik is the way he is.

So, welcome to Artesian. Grab your mask. We're all monsters here.

Hi folks! I'm looking for ARC readers for a novel of queer joy and female friendship called Sixty Percent of Rain. I'm seeking thoughtful reviews on Amazon and Goodreads, excitement in places like this subreddit, and readers who will enjoy the hell out of this book that is so dear to my heart.

Publication day is August 28th, and ARCs will be distributed in EPUB format on Netgalley and Bookreads.

If you're interested, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/4mFDgfN7b4nCyUjT7

About the book:
Seven middle-life women—queer and straight—go camping for a weekend in late summer 2024. Lex is dealing with a fresh breakup from her boyfriend. Sonia doesn’t want to talk about her unhealthy marriage. Connie’s a former indie rocker with a partner who has the career she once wanted. Tag is a lesbian elder and outdoorswoman, questioning her career in the post-pandemic world. Mayim is underemployed, single, and grappling with the consequences of nearly dying as a child. Hazel and Avery are former partners, married to other people, and missing these kinds of days together.

From flaming marshmallow sculptures to lightning strikes on tents, deep personal stories told while splashing in a kettle pond to quiet late-night tears over what-could-have-been, the seven women are challenged by the elements, their lives at home, and one another… all in the hopes of returning home with something they’ve been missing.

A novel of queer joy and female friendship, SIXTY PERCENT CHANCE OF RAIN asks the question… when looking back at your life, would you trade what you have, for something else?

Review You & I, Rewritten - Chip Pons

The first part of this book was sweet and a great way to get intertwined into the characters of the book. It deals with some heavy topics towards the end but I think it's integral and really grounds the characters in reality. Chip is such a good writer. I really enjoyed this book, even if it did make me cry.

(Premise)

Not to jinx it or anything, but the stars seem to finally be aligning for Will Cowen. After accepting a dream promotion at one of New York City’s most renowned publishing houses and moving in with his oldest friend, he’s ready to dive headfirst into this new chapter and take the literary world by storm – that is, until he crosses paths with Graham Austin.

No matter how hard he tries, he can’t help but put the wrong foot forward in front of the all-business and inconveniently gorgeous heir to the publishing empire.

So, when a heartbreakingly beautiful manuscript lands on his desk, Will seizes the opportunity for a win. Could this prized new author be his big break or, his downfall?

Will’s confidence and hope for his professional future is obliterated when the author ghosts him at an important publishing event. Fueled by insecurity and an open bar, he finds himself in need of comfort, which comes from the least likely person, the normally cold and distant Graham. This small glimpse behind Graham’s icy exterior is the spark that sweeps these two up in an epic and unforeseen romance.

As his author’s manuscript begins to take shape, the words that initially brought them together become more and more tangled, making it painfully obvious to Will that despite your best efforts, there is truly no hiding from the past.

But can it be rewritten?

Discussion So I didn't like "On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous"

To be clear, I don't want this to be a takedown or or a circle jerk about the book being terribly overrated or how people who do enjoy it are wrong. There are things I did enjoy about the book, and for those who got more out of it than I did, I wouldn't dare take that away. Rather I'd like to see if I am alone in my feelings, and if my critique holds any value, because I'll be real: When I think about the things I didn't like about the book, a lot of it feels strange to say aloud.

To start with the positives, I do think the story itself is fine. For those who have experienced intergenerational trauma, parental abuse, racism, and other things, I can understand why the subject matter would speak to them.

I guess my issue is with the details, or in how the story is told. I found the tone of the book to be excessively maudlin without ever letting up even when the moment is intended to be humorous. Much of the material I read around the book prior to purchasing was about how the writer is an accomplished poet, and much of the prose feels designed to flex that fact rather than to enhance the mood or establish a setting. I say this as someone who generally prefers purple prose to the alternative, but it's not purple prose so much so much as just frequently out of touch with the events it's describing.

On the subject of the prose, this is a complaint that each time I say it I feel absolutely silly, but when I read it, I can't help but feel this way. The book's use of real world brand names and media properties seems to supercede any other form of description to the point of distraction. The color of clothes, the taste of a soft drink, the sound of a piece of music will very often seem secondary (if they are described at all) to the brand name or the title. This is not an indictment against the use of the brand names or the title, as yes, brands can be used to describe things too. Not to mention, they can be used to help set the time and place of a piece of work.

But the problem is that the nature of these things, at least to me, seem more ambiguous as a result.

My least favorite example is when Little Dog is describing his soon-to-be-boyfriend's bedroom, and he points out "a Star Wars poster (The Empire Strikes Back)"

The author couldn't just leave it at "a Star Wars poster," it was deemed absolutely mandatory that we know which film it was.

I'm sure some of you are already in the process of typing that emphasizing which film it is characterizes him as an OG fan, and not a fan of the prequels for instance. And that is fair, but I ask then would not it be preferable to have said that, rather than hastily adding the film's title in parenthesis? It feels like something my writing teacher would have asked me to omit in the editing process.

I swear, I'm not trying to be a jerk, and every time I say it, it sounds like the most petty nitpick in the world, like some Twitter comment that I would normally see the better of before clicking send. But it happens with such frequency and so often when a more generic term would have worked better that it often dulled the emotional impact of some moments of the story.

Moving on from that, I'm not sure how I feel about the epistolary nature of the novel. I like it in concept, in fact I was convinced I would like it because the synopsis of "a series of letters from a son to his mother who can't read" sounds lovely. But outside of the moments when his mother is directly involved with the plot, I rarely felt the concept through the writing.

For example, perhaps I'm just a prude--and given my religious upbringing, that's perhaps true so forgive me if this is groan-inducing--I don't understand why someone would write a sexually explicit account about how good it feels to be fucked in the ass as a letter specifically addressed to their mother. It's not that I don't understand him confiding his sexual encounters. It's the abject explicitness that doesn't work for me.

I understand that she can't read, so he's speaking with more freedom than he normally would, but I don't feel like some of these accounts are things I would *need* to share in detail *with my mother* even if I felt I could. Again, this could be a me not understanding thing. But it often feels throughout the book that the epistolary format is an afterthought, even without those specific segments.

Again, not here to bring the book down. I can understand why the book might speak to people as the subject matter is genuinely poignant. I suppose for a book that I often see recommended as a contemporary masterpiece of queer literature, I find it tells a compelling story but tells it kind of poorly. The "what" is fine but the "how" is lacking.

It's possible that I may not be the right demographic for it. As a femme lesbian (a label I don't really like because I find it pigeonholing but is helpful for context in this instance) I usually don't have any issue reading books by and about gay men. But perhaps there is a bit more of a divide here, as there is no real attempt to bridge the gap or make it more palatable for people like me. Which is fine, it doesn't and shouldn't have to. But it might explain my disconnect.

Anyway, this post has gone on long enough. Am I completely alone here? Is there something I am missing? I would be interested in seeing if there are any thoughts which may give me a greater appreciation of the novel.

ISO queer male lead fantasy novels

i am looking for fantasy. primarily that oldschool epic fantasy feel, and not a book which is primarily a romance novel in a fantasy setting. no shade on those at all i read a lot of that genre and love it, but i am craving something else!

i want a book about a fantasy world and a fantasy plot which happens to have a queer man at the helm, and his romance(s) are just another aspect of the book.

ideally looking for adult fiction, something with a bit of grit and bite to it.

standalone or a series are fine!

also open to a good, gritty sci fi like this but i am less of a sci fi guy than fantasy. apocalyptic / dystopian also great. really what i am looking for is just genre fiction with gay / queer men at the forefront!

ISO Cross-country Roadtrip Recommendations

I'm in desperate need of new books and Audible recommendations for a cross country roundtrip!

I primarily read primarily MM romance, but I'm open to pretty much any subgenre if the story is amazing. My favorites include:

- Paranormal

- Omegaverse/Mpreg

- Mafia

- Monster romance

- Hockey & sports romance

- Dark romance

- Fantasy

- Hurt/Comfort

- Bi-awakening

- Fated mates

- Found family

- Possessive/protective MCs

My biggest preference is that each book follows a different couple. I love interconnected standalones or series where every book focuses on a new couple while previous characters make appearances. I'm not really looking for one couple stretched across 5-10 books.

Bonus points if it's available on Audible with fantastic narration!

Some of my favorite authors include Lark Taylor, Cora Rose, Onley James, Davidson King, Riley Hart, E.M. Lindsey, Charlie Novak, Kindle Alexander, Brooke Blaine & Ella Frank, and Raleigh Ruebins.

Hit me with your absolute favorite recommendations—especially those hidden gems that don't get talked about enough! 📚🎧

ISO Contemporary romance

Doesn't have to be exactly romance, but I like a focus on characters & inner/interpersonal conflict.

I like emotionally intense books that are pretty grounded in reality--so I'd prefer no fantasy or books with a huge overarching plot aside from the characters lives.

Some subjects I really enjoy reading about: identity struggles, substance abuse, mental illness, trauma, unhealthy relationships, morally gray characters, love letters to particular towns/cities/(sub)cultures, and sports in general.

Any books this brings to mind, please let me know! Thanks.

Hi to everyone! I’m looking for the queer book recs over 300 pages. Not YA. It’s not particularly should be the romance.

If it’s a romance, I’m also not a big fan of big age gap.

Thank you in advance!

ISO Best LGBT graphic novels for adults?

I was a pretty prolific reader but due to a health problem I can't read novels (other than as audiobooks). I'd love to get more into graphic novels. I've read all of Alison Bechdel's work, Roaming by Mariko Tamaki, and My favorite thing is monsters by Emil Ferris. Thank you!
