I have run into an issue using automatic transfer window calculators. For interplanetary mission, I often rely too heavily on transfer window calculator tools for quick estimates of optimal times to launch but have run into a case where I am completely stumped. Despite following all recommended planning, I am unable to achieve an intercept.
In this specific case, I am trying to send a craft to Moho, according to two separate calculators, Y3 D82 is a go for Moho. However, as we know, Moho transfer windows occur at a phase angle of about 110 degrees. As we can see in the images, on Y3 D82, Moho is very much not in the right place. This means one of two things: either both Alexmoon's and Astrogoth's tools are unreliable, or I am doing something horribly wrong. I am inclined to believe the latter. I have fiddled with maneuvers in all six directions, tried all 360 of ejection angle, and messed with mid-course burns to no avail. Moho (or my craft) is simply in the wrong place. I understand Moho is on a highly inclined orbit, but surely that cannot be the only factor preventing me from getting an intercept.
What gives? Am I relying too much on these tools? Am I using this incorrectly? Are these tools worth using or should they be abandoned in favor of just eyeballing phase angle? Am I expecting too much handholding from the community?
