I have inherited this Japan Meiji45 (1912) One Yen silver dragon coin from my Grandfather forty years ago. I am thinking of submitting it to PCGS for grading and encapsulation. My question is, is my coins worth to spend those extra fee to do it?

I've had this idea in the back of my mind for a while but haven't done anything about it until now. I want to get an Inari/fox E-sen, from the Edo period of course, as a gift for my sister. I don't know a lot about E-sen or the market for them, so thank you in advance if anyone here can give me some advice. I don't know what the value of one would be, and I also don't know the best place to find one, especially since it might be easier for me to fall for a fake, opposed to what I usually buy. I live in the US.

Hi everyone, I know nothing about coins, so I figured I'd ask here.

My grandfather bought two of these coins, one for me and the other for my brother, and my mom just found them in the safe.

I'm trying to figure out whether this is the regular (uncirculated) version or the proof version. I'm not going to open them but I'm just going to assume they are the uncirculated version.

I don't plan on selling it anytime soon, especially since I don't need even the money. I'm just going to hold onto it and learn more about what I have.

I'm coming from the Pokémon collecting world, so I'm familiar with sealed and graded collectibles, so I was also thinking if I should get them graded. But I don't know if it's a good idea since it's still in its original sealed packaging.

TLDR: What is your experience with counterfeit Japanese copper coins? Are there many modern fakes or mostly just contemporary and historic counterfeits? Thank you for your time

I was curious as to what everybody’s experience is with old Japanese copper coins. Specifically Kan’ei Tsuhō and Tenpo Tsuhō. Have you ever seen modern counterfeits? I’ve thought about it and can’t really see the profit motivation to go through the effort to manufacture and sell them for the most part. I can see it more with the 100 Mon than the 1 Mon and most 4 Mon coins. Maybe as overpriced souvenir coins, but it seems like one could just as easily buy genuine coins and sell at a markup.

To me, it seems like most “counterfeits” are contemporary. Either a Daimyo making what I could call “unauthorized strikes” or some old syndicate making fakes. Either way, these are still quite interesting as they were made during the era and circulated, thus having a long history behind them.

TLDR: got a coin recently, not sure if it’s genuine. Concerned about the edges. (This is not my first Edo bar coin, just haven’t learned the series yet.)

Greetings, I recently acquired this 一分銀 (maybe Tenpo era?) and was curious as to what you guys thought about it in terms of authenticity. It seems to have some decent hallmarks of the Tenpo era stuff according to the rectangle coins website; weakness of details on obverse between 一 and 分, properly inverted sakura, weight, and the like.

One thing I have concerns about is the edge. While it appears there are validation marks (on all four sides), I am not sure if it is supposed to be otherwise smooth. I’m also not sure if it is supposed to have validation marks on all four sides.

Let me know what you guys think, I am interested in hearing your thoughts. Thank you for your time!

I was recently researching my 1 Mon Kan'eitsūhō and stumbled across Numista. When looking through the 1 Mon Old Type page, I noticed the image of a coin as the main icon and was wondering what mint it was from. My coin looks exactly like it, but the image is not listed as a named one.

I have had this coin identified as a 1 Mon Kan'eitsūhō by other members of this community and was referred to Numista. However, while researching I discovered that there were various mint producing these coins. By using photos and descriptions I believe that my coin is a Shiba-sen, but I may be incorrect although it matched the description of a Shiba-sen. If anyone knows the correct name or mint it was produced at, please feel free to let me know.

Just returned from a coin show, where I picked up a provincial 100 Mon piece to complete a set of two!

These coins were casted in the Kubota Domain, which was under control of the Satake Clan. The production took place between 1862 and 1864 at the Kagoyama Refinery, which was located in the now-defunct town of Ani.

The coins are made of copper-coated lead and are of a crude manufacture. I’m very happy to have them both and am now looking for a Nami-sen to finish my set of non-silver Akita provincial pieces.

Purchased from a professional (and I believe reputable) dealer. Weight, dimensions are correct. Passes test for mag and sigma, so confident it is silver. Last pic is a PCGS slabbed example of the same type

I promised I'd share some interesting things I've learned form this book, so here we are with my first time using it. I decided to do my Ogiwara-sen since I only had 3 to worry about. After figuring out a method for translation that worked for me, I could finally get a sense of what this book has in store (it's a lot!). I also cross referenced with the website/blog Kosenmaru. Here's what I learned about this group of Kan'eitsūhō.

For the Shichijō coins, 静岡いづみ新寛永銭の部 (Shizuoka Izumi's New Kan'ei coin catalog), writes that they are known as Ogiwara-sen because they were minted at the proposal of Ogiwara Ōmi-no-kami. It is said that the calligraphy was done by Nagasakiya Fukyū, and while the name has only been applied to coins bearing the マ頭通 "マ (Ma)" Head Tsū, recent archaeological discoveries place the previously thought to be Kyōhō era Shichijō-sen to around the same time of these coins. Kosenmaru also notes similarities in the calligraphy between the Ogiwara and Fukyū-te coins.

For the Gōsui coin, the distinguishing part is that the フ part of the 水 (Sui) radical in 永 Ei meets the central vertical stroke | at the same height as the last two right strokes く. On other examples they do not, and フ is typically higher. Hartill does not note this in his book.

For the Edo coin, 静岡いづみ新寛永銭の部 describes that while the calligraphic style of the obverse inscription resembles that of earlier issues, the color of the copper differs, as circulating coins appear more yellowish. The reverse rim is broad, and the texture of the field is relatively fine-grained. The coin is not only thicker but also features deeper relief on both the obverse and reverse sides, though Kosenmaru notes that none of this is by much. Hartill notes that is is characteristic of the Kameido Ogiwara coins to feature the dot of the 辶 radial in 通 Tsū detached. When compared, I believe the Tsū characters between Shichijō and Kameido Ogiwara coins are visually different. Also, there is an alternative theory that Edo Ogiwara-sen were actually minted beginning in the 10th year of Genroku (1697), three years before the Shichijō Ogiwara-sen, however it does not seem to be widely accepted.

I acquired these two coins recently and was wondering what grade these would recieve. The two coins in question are a 1877 2 sen "Square Scales" variety and a 1877 1 sen coin. My LLC told me that they would say that these coins are in VF condition, but I would just like a second opinion from the members of this community.

Funny that there was just another post on this, as I was looking at these coins and considering whether to buy them. Viewing comparisons online, it seems these may be fake/reproductions as well.
Any tips on identifying genuine coins of this type?
