I am an M.A. candidate in the Graduate School of Education and Human Development at The George Washington University. For my Master’s thesis, I am conducting research on the impact of the inclusion of 20th-Century genocides other than the Holocaust (such as the Armenian, Bosnian, and Cambodian) in the Virginia state world history curriculum on students’ experiences and understanding of genocide and human rights as adults. 

Eligible participants in this survey are

• People who are over the age of 18 
• And were in the 10th grade in either the 2022-2023 or 2023-2024 academic years
• And attended a Virginia public school for the entirety of their 10th-grade year 
• And took a world history class during that year

If all of these attributes apply to you, you are invited to take this survey. This survey will take approximately 3-5 minutes to complete. You will be asked to recall your experiences in your 10th-grade world history class. The questions pertain to the extent to which you learned about 20th-century genocides, the methods used to teach you about them, your experience with this curriculum, and how it has impacted your current understanding of genocide and human rights as an adult. 

At the end of the survey, you will be asked if you would like to participate in an interview to elaborate on this topic. Participation in the interview is entirely voluntary, will not affect whether the data from the survey will be used in the study, and will have no impact on any aspect of your future relations with the George Washington University (GW).

The anticipated findings from this research will contribute to the current body of research surrounding best practices in genocide education and improve scholarly understanding of how genocide education impacts understanding of genocide and human rights as a whole. This research seeks to contribute to the broader goals of genocide prevention and human rights promotion.

My room is last in buidling in high-end Altitude apartment, which is full for all one/two bedrooms, only 4 bedrooms are left*

Looking for someone to take over my room in the Altitude, a high-demand 2 bedroom apartment with own private bathroom on the top floor with a terrace, every thing furnished. Building phase 2 is recently build and almost brand new. April 10 start date until July 15 2027. Apartment is new and cleaned, not renewal. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for living in the village as a freshman. I mostly chose living there so I could break out of my shell and be more social. Any advice for stuff I should or should not do?

I made this post in the Charlottesville subreddit as well because that’s my true destination, but I’m a recent JMU grad who started a moving company in Harrisonburg/Charlottesville, and after making a delivery to Connecticut this evening, my Chevrolet express will be completely empty, minus a copious amount of moving blankets. With the fall semester right around the corner, I was thinking it could save someone a lot of time and even money if I were able to transport their stuff back to school for them. DM me if interested! Could be anywhere along my route, but I specifically mentioned those places because I figure they’re the hotspots.

I'm a rising sophomore. I received a scholarship going into freshman year, which was based on need but connected to merit. I was told this scholarship was renewable all four years as long as the FAFSA didn't go up significantly and I maintained good grades. Both those things happened but as of now I haven't seen anything on my aid sheet. This scholarship enabled our family to afford JMU and played significantly into my decision to attend. Should I be worried? What should I do?

Have a wide open schedule, only morning classes and don’t go out a ton so can pickup a day on the weekend, any suggestions or should I just try all the restaurants and stuff?

I wanted to order some things and have them sent to my JMU address so they'd be there when I return in a couple weeks. How long do they hold packages (would they still be there when I come back)?

I'm an incoming industrial design student, but the only art classes I'm taking this year are the foundation classes (FDS 102, 104, 106). Do y'all know what kind of supplies to bring, is there a list somewhere?

Hello, recently found out that my team-mates have been enrolled in some upcoming professional development courses (Government Accounting, Cyber Security, etc.) and I was wondering if the exam portion of these classes are proctored.

I am 41 and have severe testing anxiety and it nearly ended my college career 20 years ago because of testing anxiety. Just the thought of someone watching my every move / click makes me so nervous. I have never cheated on anything in my life, and I was able to barely graduate in 2005 but now the thought of coming back to strict testing makes me almost want to go look for another job.

Are these tests proctored, or is it more of a relaxed, "easy" exam? My hope is that because this isn't for academic credits, it isn't as stringent. Thanks folks, go Dukes!

Everyone says I should save up alot of money for college, but Ik that there’s not much to do outside of campus so I’m honestly not sure what I’m gonna be spending my money on 😭

Especially if you like to travel and are open to relocating

Just curious what peoples thoughts are.

I’m transferring to JMU in the fall and am considering rushing, but I’m worried that sororities won’t want me because I don’t shave. I personally have never removed my body hair and I have no desire to do so. I know that most girls wear mini skirts/mini dresses and if I do so I’m worried that people will be mean or not want me in their sorority because of it. I love existing in my natural body but this process is making me feel a bit insecure.

I’m an incoming freshman. I know that the UREC offers free group whitewater rafting trips, and that sounds sick. I want to get my tuition’s worth of student resources while at JMU, so please tell me about any other trips sponsored by the UREC that I can do for free, or in general any fun things to do while on campus. Hi! I was approved for a single dorm with an attached bathroom for the upcoming school year. I was given the choice of either a single room in Paul Jennings without an attached bathroom (none were available), OR a single room in Shenandoah with an attached private bathroom. My only concern about Shenandoah is that it’s a freshman dorm. I was just wondering which dorm would be larger and just some general advice on what my best option would be? I’ve heard the Jennings singles are so small 😭

Long story short, I was a dumbass who didn't realize how quickly classes would fill up, and I am now trying to pick out my classes after the enrollment period opened up on June 29. I am an incoming Bio Major who didn't do too well on the ALEKS, and I now have to probably take MATH 150 or 105. The issue is that a lot of Math classes have already filled up, or are all online, or are with pretty shitty professors. I picked out BIO 140 + 140L, but the lab is not showing up on my schedule. I know it's recommended you take 15 credits per semester, but atp I don't even know if I can take 12. Does anyone know if classes open up before August?

What is the difference between UNST 110 vs COB 110? I believe both are for new students but one maybe more geared towards business majors. Anyone know which might be better and did you enjoy? Thanks!

We are planning on getting married out near Harrisonburg and we had the idea of having one of the students at JMU play our wedding ceremony music, but we can't figure out how we would even get in contact with someone in the music program at JMU. We thought it might be a good way for a college student to make some money!

I’m trying to decide if living on campus again for my senior year is worth it or not. Off‑campus has been comfortable. I cook my own meals, have privacy, keep my space clean, and have a bit more financial freedom and I’ve gotten used to the independence.

But I also feel more isolated. Getting to campus takes more effort, so I end up skipping clubs meets or social stuff because the commute feels like a whole task.

I’m trying to figure out whether the isolation is because of where I live or because I’m not pushing myself enough. I’m also anxious about moving again and giving up the comfort that I’ve built.

If you’ve lived off‑campus and then moved back on (or stayed off), how did it affect your social life and mental health? Was the tradeoff worth it?

TL;DR: Off‑campus gives me comfort, privacy, and more money. On‑campus might give me connection and easier socializing. I’m trying to decide if the social benefits outweigh the comfort I’d lose.

I’m not living on campus next semester, either. What do I do? Should I drive up there or is there a way to get it shipped to my house?
