Hi there everyone! I'm new to the sub and the hobby alike -- the only type of inverts I've kept are isopods so far. I'm intending to expand my collection soon :)

So, I was given this neat little enclosure recently that's kind of unusual, and I'm hoping to get some thoughts on what kind of invert might find it a good home? I won't get anything until I've done plenty of reading/looking ofc, but any thoughts would be much appreciated!

The enclosure is a little quirky in design lol, but I'm hoping it can suitable for something. For one thing, it doesn't open at the top, only on one side (as pictured.) It's got a lot of cross-ventilation, and there are about 3 inches for substrate beneath the door hinges. The pictures have measurements, but just in case: it's roughly 5" deep, 8" wide, 9" tall, with the 9" being split evenly between the bottom, the door area, and the highest point on the "roof"

I'd also be happy to alter it slightly, like if there's too much ventilation or if that thin crack at the top of the door needs to be somehow sealed

Hello! Long story short my daughters have been giving birth nonstop and I have a pretty big collection of nymphs!
(I am NOT looking to sell them- I just want to give them to someone who would love them!)

There’s so many I don’t even know what to do with them-

I’m looking to transfer my grandbabies to someone! I don’t want to have to give them to petsmart again and I’m hoping that there will be someone out there willing to give them a good home or make sure they make a good snack at least-

I genuinely believe there’s over 100 by now..

I’m also wondering about advice on how to transport them? I’ve heard you can basically put them in a box and they should be fine but I’m not a huge fan of that idea-
My plan would be to get a huge box to seperate them as best as I can then get a bunch of Tupperware with holes on the top, food and egg cartons for them? Any other tips for how to effectively seperate them would be welcome since this would be my first time!

I had gotten 2 millipedes from online a while back. I had crossed my fingers they would give me 2 females or 2 males but it came as 1 female 1 male. I had seperated them a long while back hoping they have not done the baby making yet.. but low and behold I have a tub of a bunch of baby millipedes! I love my millipedes and my many creatures.. But seeing all the babies squirming around in the dirt is really freaking me out! I'm in the Virginia area with no reptile stores around me to take them! If anyone wants a free box of Ivory millipedes, please take them if I can atleast keep one or two.. Or if anyone can provide me with advice on what to do, it would be appreciated!

How are we keeping inverts warm in winter I have a jumping spider in a tarantula cribs enclosure and three isopods in bins

I was wondering if anyone keeps mosquitos as pets and what the care would be? I've seen leeches and even a colony of mold on here before so traditionally "pest" species do have their audience.

So I fell in love with these assassin bugs. Unfortunately there is very little information on them! If anyone of you had them, may I ask what enclosure you keep/kept them in? I read that the nymphs will escape from everywhere and the enclosure I was going to buy has doors (like the exo terra ones).

Is it true? Should I be worried or pick an aquarium tank? Thanks in advance!

Hey all, I am setting this up for a juvenile Asian forest scorpion and i am wondering if any changes need to be made. I am having a bit of trouble with the humidity levels holding 70-80%. I taped off a lot of the top but it still seemed to dry out on the surface fairly quickly. I have purchased a riser for the LED light bar hoping that will help me out. All tips welcome! Cheers. (I just sprayed the enclosure so 99% atm)

Looking for advice…

On July 12th, a friend texted me that he had a beetle for my collection (I pin insects that I find deceased). When I went to pick up the beetle, he was very clearly alive. I bought a ten gallon terrarium and filled it with dirt, dried moss, living plants, small sticks, and added a large stick a few days later, which he seemed to really like.

The first few days, I was worried he was going to pass. His legs didn’t seem to be working well at all, he wasn’t burrowing at all (which research states is very important for them), he seemed lethargic and didn’t want to eat. He would let me pick him up and he seemed to enjoy crawling around on my shirt.

Once I started feeding him sugar water and bananas, he perked up and was making consistent progress. He started burrowing (not well) but was getting better and better. The last two or three days, he’s been fully burrowing and hiding to where I couldn’t find him unless I dug around. He was walking very well and was very active. I didn’t see him eating anymore though, and he stopped letting me feed him sugar water. He even started hissing a bit when I was picking him up. So I thought he had likely fully recovered, so I left him alone to not cause anxiety. I had been considering returning him to nature since he seemed capable of surviving. He was burrowed this afternoon. I just went to check on him and he’s passed….

Was there something I did wrong or is this normal? I obviously don’t know how old he was, but I don’t understand why he seemed to be doing so well and then suddenly died.

Any advice or reassurance would be appreciated.

Im so sad right now, I want to do anything to help them. I found one dead a few days ago, and checked in today to find two dead, one "injured" (?) It only moves its antennae. It might be overcrowding but I was told these beetles are highly communal and social. I caught all of these from the wild personally, so it could be just the lifespan, but I highly doubt it. Please help me, give me tips. If I need to, I will release some of them back into the wild.​

update: bigger tank was acquired and around 4 beetles were released. everyone is doing well now :)

Sorry, I know this isn't quite what this sub is for, but I kinda didnt know where else to ask.

I have a house centipede living with me, and it keeps falling in my bathtub/sink. I want him around because I know he eats pests, and also hes cute, and i kinda like having a little guy in my house.

Now when I notice him in somewhere slippery I usually rescue him and put him somewhere in the house where he wont get stuck again, but i was wondeirng you bug sages happened to have a reccomendation for where I could put him where he would actually stay out of trouble?

I figure he keeps going for sinks n stuff because of water, but i dont really want to leave water out bc I dont want to attract less fun bugs. I do keep plants tho, maybe by them?

It wont let me upload a video but I have some hornworms and theyre in pots of eco earth because they wont eat and yet theyre not burrowing at all. I thought because they werent eating, a bit squishy, wandering, and shrunken a bit meant they were soon to pupate but maybe im wrong? Theyre staying on the surface and one of them is thrashing and rolling around somewhat like a hog nose snake. I dont know what to do and I wish to see these guys reach adult hood

They're all happy and fat, to say the least!

Btw, this is a shared colony tank — it's also where I breed isopods, springtails, earthworms, etc. There's a common lined snake in there too, keeping the earthworm population in check since they were WAY overpopulating before. They're still overpopulated, honestly, but at least it's more stable now.

Everyone's peaceful. The lined snake is fat and happy, can easily get away from the roaches, and has plenty of humid hides. It even eats a nymph here and there from what I've seen.

This is genuinely a balanced ecosystem enclosure. I started this project years ago — honestly lost count at this point — and it's been a real passion project. My original question was: given the right resources, could MHCs and Dubias adapt to a local Midwest forest floor environment? Obviously winter would wipe them out, so that's outside the scope of the experiment, but I wanted to see if, given the chance, they'd settle in and become just another part of the ecosystem. So far, they have — everyone's thriving.

I think it's an interesting experiment because it raises the question: given enough time to adapt to Midwest conditions, what insects could potentially invade this region? Maybe quiet invasions are already happening and we just haven't noticed yet.

For me it's a small-scale, short-term case study in adaptation — watching native Midwest species and two total outsiders (MHCs and Dubias, from completely different parts of the world) balance out and coexist in one tiny ecosystem.

In the tank: millipedes, snails, isopods, springtails, earthworms, soil centipedes, slugs, the roaches, and the lined snake. It all just works together beautifully. :)

I love sitting up all night watching them — the tank's at the foot of my bed, and observing how the whole thing self-adjusts feels like watching a nature documentary in my own room. I really love this 20-gallon setup.

Wanted to share this project and see what people think. I know some parts might be controversial, but my goal has always been to replicate a Midwest spring/summer environment — every soil creature included — then introduce the roaches and watch how things adapt. If I ever saw genuine harm happening to any animal, I'd dismantle it and separate everyone immediately. So far, though, everything just works. As nature intended.

Hi! I’m wanting to get some BDFB or however the acronym goes. What are some other species or inverts that can happily coexist with them and what’s the minimum tank requirements?

Hi recently I realized there's a ton of grain mites in my beetles and worms bins and I have no clue how to get rid of them and it's making me really overwhelmed and everytime I try and removebpieces of food with the mites on them there's akways so much more and I don't know what to do or how to get rid of them so please if anyone knows then i'd really appreciate it.

I live in West Texas, and see a ton of these in the backyard this time of year. We grew up calling them wind scorpions. They hatch a lot of young in my backyard. This time of year. We always leave them alone as they eat a lot of nuisance insects. Getting ready to do some tie-dyes this morning and found this guy in the tub, they don’t show up indoors often.
Was just curious if any of the invertebrate enthusiasts actually keep these as pets. I have never run across one in anyone’s terrarium or arachnid collection.
He’s a nice healthy size about 1inch body length, not anywhere close to the biggest we have seen.

I currently have a ghost mantis in a 8x8x12 container, sadly her life is nearing her end and my mom said my next pet must be easier to feed since getting flies for the mantis has always been a hassle especially in hotter seasons. SO I need help finding a good next insect to adopt.

My requirements by my family is is harmless or rarely aggressive and NO SPIDERS OR ROACHES (very big rule they hate them) I would prefer something that doesn’t spend a lot of time underground and lives atleast a year. My only problem with beetles is they spend most of their life as larva and I would prefer to spend more time with the adult version of them. I would like something active during the day and that’s okay to be handled. It would have to be something that can either eat freeze dried or dead bugs or be herbivores since live insects are to much work and hassle.

I would probably not be able to get a new enclosure so it would have to fit in the 8x8x12 one I have now, there’s is about 2 inches of space for substrate that won’t bother the door but I could raise it more towards the back. Currently I have sphagnum moss in the enclosure but I could always change that pretty easily. I have a mess sheet over the built in metal mesh because metal is bad for the mantis claws and it has pretty good ventilation. I have a heat lamp if they need hotter temperatures too. Im open to reptiles as-well! Thank you for your suggestions if you give any!❤️

It’s about at the time where wheel bugs usually molt, but i’m not seeing any behavioral or physical differences. It’s already molted once under my care, but it was pretty soon after i first got it and it molted while I was sleeping so I didn’t really get to see how they look or act different. If anyone knows how to tell, it would help. (It has been about 17 days since its last molt, and it molted with no issues. It’s very capable during feeding as well, so there’s no health concerns)
