News Subreddit changes and new moderation

Hi, I have recently become an additional mod for this subreddit. Firstly thanks u/scislac for approving me.

I've made a few small changes to start off with that I think are small enough to not cause any trouble/warrant community approval, though if there are comments about this please reach out.

  • Images embedded into comments now enabled: Now you don't have to link externally to attach images. Hopefully this should make it much easier to solve help requests with visual info.
  • Post flairs now enabled: For a while the pinned post from 10 years ago said to prefix help posts with [HELP]. A lot of the responses to this said that post flairs should be used instead, which I agree with. This has been superceded with post flairs which for now are mandatory (I think this isn't too intrusive but will consider any feedback). I've added a few categories, such as:
    • Help - for all help requests
    • Solved - for when a suitable solution has been found for a help request. Generally you wouldn't make a new post with this flair, but for changing a Help-flaired post afterwards when the OP no longer requires help.
    • Showcase - For showcasing your finished work
    • Tips & Tricks - Sharing knowledge and tutorials
    • Meta - For community suggestions and stuff related to the subreddit; comments about the software; memes; catch-all for things that don't fit in the other categories
    • News - Interesting news about inkscape; version releases, etc.
  • Update to rule 4: I have included AI-generated responses as examples of possible low effort comments. They aren't specifically disallowed, but now it is the commenter's responsibility to ensure the accuracy and relevancy of the information. The response must directly address the help request, and must not contain incorrect or "hallucinated" information.
  • u/litelinux and u/Xrott have also become moderators.

Please let me know if there are any issues regarding these changes or if you want anything else changed. I'll also consider revamping the look, for example adding a banner image. There will soon also be some optional user flairs available.

Help Merging paths created by Mirror Symmetry path effect?

I'm using Mirror Symmetry to create symmetrical paths that meet in a defined center point. I'd like these paths to merge so that the paths can be one unbroken path once I get them to touch. This matters since I'll be using a pen plotter to plot them out, and the more merged lines = the less time the pen has to go up and down = smoother appearance.

Fuse Paths in mirror symmetry doesn't seem to do this. Is there a way I can accomplish what I'm trying to do?

Help How can I get rid of "line" when setting two objects flush.

Post image
6 Upvotes

There's this little line (as seen in between tan objects) that is shown between two objects when making them flush with each other. Is there any way to get rid of this? It even shows up when they're overlapping. It wouldn't be an issue if it disappeared when exporting a .png or .pdf, but it still shows up then too. The only thing I can think of is that they're different gradients- but they should still be the same color at the location where they're joined.

Help How do you create texture and edges like Irasutoya art?

I am interested in creating line edges and texture like illustrations found in Irasutoya using Inkscape. Like ink/marker on construction paper. I thought the texture part would be as simple as using construction paper as a mask, but the result didn't come out well.

Help Is there a command to stop/abort an operation that is stalling the program out....explanation in body.

I am using inkstitch extension. Some of the stuff I am working lately are large files with lots of objects. Certain proccesses take more than few minutes sometimes or I eventually just crash it by closing it and reopening the last autosave(which I do have set up at 2 mins, so it's not the end of the world).

All of that being said, sometimes I accidentally hit the wrong shortcut key or simply want to abort something for one reason or the next. Is there an option to abort whatever it is stalling/working on?

I can elaborate further is more details are needed, just ask in the comments.

I have been using inkscape for a while...

These are my drawings of my OCs Azar and Olivia? How did I do and how can I make poses in inkscape?

Also the reason why they look like a certain Incredibox mod is because did originally came from that mod but due to drama involving me, I left and now they are independent human OCs but I can't find a good art style for now

Help Inkscape Learning Curve is Very Strange

I don’t know..maybe because im a beginner, but I’m finding it very difficult to do simple tasks on here. Certain shortcuts don’t work even when I look them up. For example, they tell me to press control and the mouse to move the canvas, it doesn’t work. Instead it’s the space bar and hovering the mouse over the canvas.

Another example is the bezier pen. Certain curves don’t fit my liking, so I’m trying to undo them, but instead of undoing the nodes it undos the change of opacity I made on the image I’m working on, as if the likes I created don’t exist. And when I connect the nodes back to the original, for some reason fills it in with color when I just want to lines itself.

All of this is making me frustrated and causing me to take more time on a project that could be completed in 2 hours. If you guys can help me out and list some shortcuts or how to edit them, I’d greatly appreciate it.

Help Remove the bottom of the trees

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey all, new to Inkscape. I am trying to remove the bottom of the trees, below the circular shape. I've tried using cut path, intersection, difference and exclusion (just trying everything haha, not sure what all those even do). The trees were just strokes that I filled in, and when I do cut path, the trees revert to the stroke, and then some corners randomly get rounded.

Any advice? Thanks in advance!

I like making my own video games as a hobby. So far, I've only used RPG Maker and market assets because I've convinced myself I have no artistic talent. But then I got frustrated by not being able to create custom assets to fit my needs exactly. I was originally planning on teaching myself pixel art with this stick figure dancing game idea but then I discovered vector art.

I made a concept face for my dancing stick man in about 30 mins and I don't hate it... I think I'm going to like inkscape.

Help Crashes only with specific files.

I've been working with Inkscape for quite some time now, I started in 2018, but recently I started to notice a behaviour I haven't seen before.

I don't do that highly complex files, it's mostly just simple logo design and rasterizing bitmaps, but after some time some files get corrupted somehow and I can't open them again. Editing wasn't a problem, save went smoothly, I closed Inkscape normally, not crash, but when I later want to open a file again, it does this (see picture) and closes.

The SVG itself doesn't seem corrupted, Chrome and Inkview can still open an display them as usual but Inkscape can't open them anymore. Some of these files I can still open via "import SVG" in a new Inkscape session but even then, it sometimes fails instantly or the file I save later also can't be opened with Inkscape again.

I don't know if this has append to others, deleting the "recently-used.xbel" didn't do anything. It's on a per file or better per design basis as it seems.

I'm currently using v1.3.2 but I also tried v1.4.3 and it didn't change.

Help Terrain "flow line" to gCode export workflow

Hi, lately I've been exploring terrain visualization, inspired in the first place by the Joy Division's Unknown Pleasure album cover.

I manage to build the kind of visualization i want and export it to .svg. However, my end goal now is to trace these visuals using my homemade plotter, so I need to somehow convert my visual to gCode. Here is what I can end up with for example :

End result I'd like to be able to trace using my plotter

I already worked with the Gcodetools extension and this is what I usually use for my plotter. However, here I am facing a few issues and I am unsure how to solve these, as I am quite a beginner on Inkscape.

The "raw data" I am working with here are each line as an indivdual path. In other word, by default, it is a "wireframe" view, where a line can be seen even if it is behind another one. The trick I used to solve this is to "extrude" each line down by a few cm, creating a closed shape and then fill it with white. This way, each layer hides what is behind it. After, I can clip the visual in order to hide the vertical sides of each shape.

example of the "wireframe" raw data I start with
In blue, example of a white filled slice I am building in order to create "walls"

This works great for visuals, but it is hard for me to modify my path so Gcodetools knows what to work with. Indeed, I am facing these two issues which are somehow related :

  1. Gcodetools does not have any clue of the path's order, and which is "hiding" which. It converts each path to gCode, resulting back in the wireframe view I initially had.
  2. Even worse, it now wants to trace the whole "slice" as it is part of the path.

Shortly, my question is : how can I somehow go from my visuals to a set of path which are clearly understood by Gcodetools ? I suspect the answer is to use boolean operation between my different slices and path in order to "split" any hidden path into 2 different subpath, completely removing the hidden sections but it is not clear for me how to proceed here, especially if I want to somehow automatize the process (I am OK with scripting, I already used a script to "extrude" each path into a wall.

My best guess right now would be to :

  1. instead of extruding existing path into a single close path, keep the original paths and instead create another object with only the closed shape used for hiding what's behind a path
  2. Going through all my slices and sequentially use a slice's shape to cut the path of any slice behind it, keeping only what is not hidden (boolean ?)
  3. Remove the filled solid shape for each slice and use Gcodetools on the previously cut paths

Am I heading towards the right directions ? To you have anything else in mind to do this ?
