Discussion/Question Can I Claim My Ancestry?
I KNOW I am Native American. The people on my maternal side of the family are black with indigenous features, and when I look at pictures of those they grew up with, they are undeniably native and some are full-blood. However, no one knows the tribe. I feel a little embarassed in my confidence to claim I am Native American even though I know I am, because I don't know the tribe. When people ask, they often look down on me because I don't know exactly where I am from, leaving people to doubt me. I am also mixed race, so that's another thing. Can I claim to be Indigenous even though I don't know the tribe? I go to powwow and I buy and wear handmade earrings. I want to be honest because I am Indigenous I know I am and respectful.
