I was at the RHH (hospital) a few times and I tried to order taxis online. I just see people accepting my request, then cancelling it. Over and over again. Each and every fucking time. Ordered an Uber, and it's right there.

I realise there is a taxi stand right up Elizabeth street near the mall. I could not walk there. Never ordering another taxi again.

And I hear how taxi drivers diss Uber etc. What do you have to say about this?

EDIT: And the one time I managed to literally hop (stopping many times) to the taxi stand, the front taxi guy looked as is I was asking him for a blowjob but very reluctantly accepted my ride. SUre, it was not to the airport. It was to my house 2Km away. But fuck me, right?

Hi! I am wondering if there are any simple tracks I could do to play with the snow that does not subject me to death/rescue in Mt wellington tomorrow? I saw online about the zigzag track being subjected to 100kmh winds, and I am not into something like that. I am not sure if the other tracks would have snow.

I saw that it would snow overnight so I am planning to go there tomorrow! We drove to Tassie from Brissy(staying in Hobart till saturday) and have never seen snow before! We hike grade 4 hikes regularly around Brissy, but after a super scary rock scramble at Giraween National Park, I do not want to do any more scrambles in the foreseeable future.

We drove here with a 4x4 (prado 90), do we need snow chains? We have experience driving on sand but am not so sure about snow/ice.

I told them that there's a lot of customers like myself who just want to be able to walk in and get things - for example I need a 1m thunderbolt cable, they're about $15 but the shipping would be that much again. Tas principles don't stock stuff like this (In fact they don't seem to stock much of anything, it's always "We'll order it in") and at officeworks you're looking at $60 for the same cable, even more than just getting the thing shipped.

I’m a guy, new here in Hobart or Australia,and I moved from Southeast Asia.
I just recently found out how barbers and their services work. Maybe I was naive or just didn’t pay enough attention to their detail description.

I’ve been to a barber (LuckyChild to be exact) a few times and I thought can request which hair style I’d like to get. Also because they ask how would I like before the cutting begins, and I’d say how I’d like. But always ends up in the same style. I didn’t say much and just said to myself it’ll grow back.

Now I’m checking other barber shops for a change and this seems to be the norm or the standard.
In their descriptions on their websites, it’ll say something like “Standard cut: $45 (Short or fades on the sides and back with trimmed at the top)”. Then I realised why my previous haircuts came out that way.

Where I am from, with that price, we can get some consultation and discussion on the hair style and we can get a nice hairstyle.

Now, my question is, do I need to purposely go to specific hair salons, hairstylists and fancy places for that kind of haircut?

If so, may I ask for some suggestions?

Had front brake rotors replaced at Mama Autos (Howrah, TAS) in March. Not long after, I started hearing brake noise. During a separate visit for an AIS safety inspection, I was told the engine oil was completely empty and needed an extra service — a bit surprising, but I went ahead with it.

The brake noise never went away, and on 30 April, while driving down Mt Wellington, the brakes suddenly made a loud noise, a burning smell, and visible smoke. I had to pull over and wait for them to cool before carefully continuing down. I found a nearby workshop straight after, but they were too busy and told me to just let it cool overnight and check again. It was a bit quieter the next day but still not right, and it took a while before I could get it properly looked at.

I finally took it to Combined Automotive Solutions, who found on the hoist that one rotor bolt was missing entirely and the other was installed in the wrong position, sticking out and preventing the wheel from seating properly, with multiple wheel nuts not torqued correctly. That's what caused the noise and overheating. Had to get the whole rotor and pad set replaced.

I drove this car for months, including repeated mountain descents, with no idea the brakes were in this state. Just want to warn others — if you get brake work done anywhere and hear any noise afterward, don't brush it off, get it checked by a second workshop.

Wanted to get people's take on the road design on Collins St between Harrington and Barrack St. Between the lane markings, parking, and bike lanes, it just doesn't feel safe and it seems like whoever designed it only thought about cyclists, not everyone else who uses that stretch of road.

The traffic lanes curve right then left to make room for parking on both sides. Driving through it, you genuinely feel like you're veering into oncoming traffic for a second. But the bigger issue is what that curve does to sightlines.. it creates blind spots for pedestrians crossing mid-block, away from the signalised crossing.

And that matters here specifically because of how people actually use this block. Most people on Collins St here are parking on Village cinema parking, on the other. Technically, sure, they're supposed to walk up to Harrington St, cross at the lights, then walk back down to the cinema or their office. In practice, almost nobody does that for a 20 second midblock crossing, they just cross where they parked.

The road was designed assuming everyone would detour to the crossing, but the design doesn't match the behaviour, and the curve makes drivers less able to see them when they don't.

Anyone else find this stretch sketchy? Curious if council actually did any research into pedestrian behaviour on this road before rolling it out, or thought through how the layout creates dangerous conditions for both parking and driving. Feels like the whole approach was "we need a bike lane here, straight and simple" without much thought for how it interacts with everything else already happening on that street.

We are staying water front at the port. Massages and scrubs are a given, along with the ferry to MONA, dinners out. What else should we add to our trip? Arriving on a Wednesday if that makes any difference.

Agent sent an email requesting all internal doors and curtains be open for inspection. I understand they want to make sure all is good and they dont want to touch things if they don't have to etc..

However, a little google search and we are still unclear:

Obviously they can make the request, but if youre uncomfortable with the request, do you have to negotiate prior to the inspection? Otherwise, what happens if you *accidentally don't leave things open?

Can they ask when they arrive?

I got a flooring guy to do a quote for me to replace my hardwood floor. It was a week and a half ago. He said he would send the quote that night, but didn't. They take people from the very outskirts of Hobart into town and appear timed for locals to be able to come in and back on the same day. Anyone used it? Is it like a minibus or something?

We’ve just clocked that the property next door has a notice up about a proposed shift to temporary accommodation. It’s two separate units, which have always been leased long term to tenants for the entire time we’ve been here. Currently there are three people total residing between the two cottages.

The property sold six months ago, and it was always our fear that the new owner would try to cash in on the short term accommodation boom, and alas. All of the surrounding houses are residential, and are also in incredibly close proximity to one another. Our neighbourhood also already has a huge number of air bnbs, and I find it sickening to see another two dwellings removed from the rental market.

Has anyone got any advice or insight on what to include in a submission protesting the change to visitor accommodation? Any key points that seem to actually help in stopping something like this? I plan to canvas the rest of my neighbours to encourage them to also lodge a submission, but we’re heartbroken at the prospect of having our neighbours replaced with people coming and going constantly, with no respect for the neighbourhood or community…

I get that tourism is an important part of the local economy, and having a mix of accommodation helps service that, but it’s actually disgusting to see that in the middle of a rental crisis, they’re still entertaining applications to switch further long term rentals to short term accomodation.

We have several quite good Indian restaurants in Hobart who do your more recognised, mainly Punjabi style curries.

But there's very little available out there for street food, like snack foods or lunches? I'm talking stuff like various chaat (especially Papri chaat), Mumbai Sandwich, Pani Puri, Kathi rolls, that kind of thing?

There is one place at Salamanca markets I know of that does some samosa chaat and a couple of things. And Chaat Corner in nth Hobart, but they are only open at night. But otherwise it feels like there's a real gap in the market.
