Personally, I've decided at this point that we get any more animated projects from the "Hey Arnold" franchise, I'm cool with getting either the spin-off starring Helga Pataki or a revival season of the original show taking place after The Jungle Movie. Which ever one it is though, I strongly would rather Arnold and his parents moving out of Hillwood get scrapped for the sake of less drama. I mean if you actually stop to think about it, Helga can still be the lead focal character WITHOUT Arnold being gone, just make a few episodes where he's absent. A lot of shows do that nowadays. Also, even if "The Patakis" takes place years after the events of TJM, Miles and Stella only just came back into the picture and them taking their son back to live in San Lorenzo could just make a lot of us wish they stayed PERMANENTLY asleep. Can anyone really see I'm wrong to think any of this?

I attended the Hey Arnold event at the Frida last night, and someone and his girlfriend dressed as the Pigeon Man and one of his pigeons. Absolutely incredible.

As some of you may know, Craig Bartlett, Jim Lang and others put together an event that celebrated the 30th anniversary of Hey Arnold. It was held at the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, CA, on July 19th. There was a musical performance, live Q&A, and other activities. Of course, a Hey Arnold event would not be complete without episodes! If you couldn’t make it, here are the “fan-favorite” episodes that were selected for the event:

Hearing the score played by Jim Lang himself was absolute bliss

In this scene, Arnold could have returned Helga's insult, something like, "I wouldn't dance with a girl with a unibrow," but he simply poured himself a punch and continued enjoying the party. I, on the other hand, tend to be quite sensitive to criticism and get offended easily. I wish I had his self-esteem and composure.

Talking about why it aired out of order confusing fans to know what the characters are saying about what happened weeks months, days and last year, I'm here to do research on them because I'm letting fans know that I'm doing the work putting the episodes in chronological order and I get hate for it matching the storylines.

I don’t know which one is more emotional. I still get a lump in my throat watching the scene where Stella gives birth to Arnold, and when Miles is writing in his journal and sketching the drawing of a sleeping Arnold. But Parents day definitely hits hard as well. Poor kid was so hurt by Bob’s comment, and then the scene where Arnold doesn’t even want dessert. I know Helga didn’t really help the situation even though she was still like “dad … wtf?!” But I LOVE how she secretly wanted Phil to beat Bob in the jousting competition. Plus, the soundtrack is so beautiful, especially in his dream. I still think about the whole exchange of “they never came back, never heard from them again … and their plane was never found.” And Arnold sounds hopeful that someday they might come back even though they just might be lost, and Phil says Arnold really is growing up.

Both episodes are amazing and I wish they aired The Journal as the real series finale, as it was the final one produced in 2001.

A couple times throughout the show- the characters mention Canada. In season 1- if I remember correctly in a book- Harold mispronounces Saskatchewan- yet Helga corrects him saying the proper pronunciation as well indicating and noting it's a Canadian province.

Another thing I noticed more or less- is that several times- either through hearing someone say something or seeing I think a map- they bring up the Northwest Territories a couple times.

Since i'm still on S4- with "Student Teacher"- Olga mentions and brags several times about how she chose to be a student teacher over teaching Inuit students in Alaska. I'm not sure if the show was trying to be inclusive or note other peoples- but their Inupiat- and Inuit are from Canada.

Anyways if their is some insider info why lmk.

A Rashomon style episode where Arnold, Helga, and Harold argue over an incident that happened in 1st grade, each having their own recollection of events. The flashbacks are told in the old claymation style. Rhonda (who apparently is the girl on the bus in one of the shorts) tells them what really happened, though she might be lying or misremembering herself.

Even the opening feels like the beginning of a West Side Story rumble.

I’ve been watching this show for a while, it’s great- but I really feel like every episode around s3-4- or most are repeats- its either always Helga is obsessed with Arnold- she recites poetry nobody can hear and she gets in a pickle, or some situation- and she either gets out or sum, Gerald talks in some episodes while others he’s present or says 1-2 lines, Arnold is more neurotic or has a personality- but acts less nonchalant with Lila, Sid and Stinky are shown time and time again to be the meanest kids despite Harold being told that-, etc etc. I feel like the show mirrors itself in some ways by s4- but I think it’s meant to show how despite how far they’ve come- it’s still not a scripted life they have- ex 1) because helga did sneak into the boardhouse- to get the tape during helga blabs it all. it ends up with her pretending she doesn’t see the boys while she’s obviously in their room. yet she does it again during the parrot episode- trying to get the parrot, while shes in the same couch area- yet this time she falls through the roof onto the table. ex 2) with the German housemaid and helga trying to teach her sister it’s a similar parallel- helga doesnt appreciate them, and they end up getting sent off through misunderstanding or direct confrontation about how she feels- the German housemaid being deported- while helgas sister teaching in remote Alaska- ending more or less unresolved a but no consequences. ex 3) the cheese festival- in season 1- armold goes to the cheese festival to try and talk to Ruth- he gets noticed but nothing happens. By s4- he goes with Lila- and does manage to spend time- yet shes clesr that she doesn’t like him. ex 4) eugenes birthday basically being a callback and similar to Eugene bike- in s1- Arnold feels guilt and tries to make up for all the times he may have caused injury to Eugene- but we realize he’s a jinx, whereas this one Arnold tries to make up, yet Eugene comes to the realization Arnold is a jinx. Ex 5) deconstructing arbold- not exactly same-y but why the hell did his street cred go out the window- when kids stopped wanting him to interfere- usually their loyal and back him up.
as well it’s like I know it’s not that deep- not really related to this thread- but Sid and Stinky were the biggest opps and instigators

The episode Magic show is more profound then we realize it shows despite how Helga verbosely proclaims everyone will miss her and cry over her being gone; in her actual mind she is deeply insecure about her place in the world.  She visits the 4 most important people in her world, and despite how she treats them, she does deeply care about them even her parents, despite how they let her down a lot and seem to ignore her, she still cares about them, which further upsets her at the fact it seems everyone is happier without her.

It also shows how insecure she feels about her own relationships with others.  Helga knows that her tough front is mean and quite vicious, basically an imitation of her father, who she sees as the strongest in the household.  While she scrapes quite roughly with Bob, she recognizes that he's the toughest around, and by imitating him she can appear tough so that others won't take advantage of her quite vulnerable self, Then, upon seeing Arnold, the one person in her life that doesn't seem like he really will ever harm her (which is why she obsesses over him, he seems to be the only person to show her true kindness, to which she feels is the only piece of real love she can really hold onto, as her parents' and sister's love seems fleeting to her and she's not sure how to categorize Phoebe's feelings towards her she's not matured enough to push past her fear of being hurt or appearing weak, and therefore lashes out at him the most for his attention doesn't miss her, and now is with the girl he has a crush with.  Her worse nightmare as it means she is now totally hated and alone.  Probably enough to shove anyone out of a fear-driven dream.

At the end of the dream Helga figures out what her subconscious is trying to tell her at least somewhat that she should try to care more openly about those she loves.  It was a good lesson episode and a good growth episode for Helga.  She tones downs her roughness a tiny bit and attempts to show she cares for those she loves, though she's still the rough and tumble Helga we all know and love.

Before anyone reaches for the "misogyny" button, let me make something crystal clear:

Criticizing Suzie does not mean defending Oskar.

Oskar is a huge loser. He's lazy, selfish, irresponsible, a gambler, and routinely creates problems for himself and everyone around him. None of that is in dispute WHATSOEVER.

My point is much simpler:

Just because Oskar is usually the bigger problem doesn't mean Suzie is automatically right every time.

I think the fandom often grades them on different curves. Oskar's flaws are so loud and obvious that Suzie's mistakes either get excused or ignored entirely.

Here are my biggest examples:

"Baby Oskar"

Everyone remembers Suzie's legendary "Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow!" speech.

What people conveniently forget is that Oskar asked her for a sandwich multiple times throughout the episode, and she kept putting him off. Yes, he's a grown man who can make his own sandwich, but that's not really the point; the point is that she repeatedly dismissed his requests without a second thought.

Then Mr. Budnik calls, and suddenly there's no hesitation at all. She drops everything and responds immediately.

Then Oskar says he'll do something "tomorrow," and suddenly postponing things is unacceptable?

I'm not saying Oskar deserved Husband of the Year. I'm saying that's hypocritical.

"Arnold as Cupid"

Yes, Oskar is awful throughout this episode.

He keeps Arnold from studying.

He turns off Arnold's alarm clock.

He gambles away Arnold's CD player.

He invites strangers into Arnold's room.

None of that is defensible.

But then we get to the cherry tart scene.

Suzie demands an ice bath before dessert.

She leaves her shoes out instead of putting them under the table.

Arnold trips over them and accidentally launches her tart into the ice bath.

Oskar then offers to split his tart with her.

Instead of accepting a perfectly fair compromise, the expectation suddenly becomes that he should give her the entire tart. Rather than simply asking him, Suzie use sarcasm. Oskar, whose first language isn't English, takes the statement literally and eats the tart.

I am aware that this scene was written to put Oskar's ability to think of other people to the test, which he's supposed to fail hilariously, and people remember it as another example of his selfishness.

I remember it as the moment where he was finally trying to do the right thing, only for the goalposts to get moved.

"Gerald Comes Over"

Whatever Oskar did beforehand, throwing plates around the apartment is completely unhinged behavior.

No, Oskar doesn't magically become the good guy because Suzie throws plates.

Likewise, Suzie doesn't magically become immune from criticism because Oskar is worse.

Those two ideas can coexist.

That's really my entire point.

You can acknowledge that Oskar is one of the biggest losers in the series while also acknowledging that Suzie sometimes behaves poorly.

Those positions are not contradictory.

And no, saying that is not "sexist."

It's evaluating a fictional character's actions the same way I'd evaluate any other character's actions.

Storming off because you didn't get dessert? What are you, four?

Throwing plates around the apartment? Seriously? What are you, some kind of an animal?

Oskar being a train wreck doesn't transform every reaction Suzie has into the correct one by default.

They can both be wrong.

1. Curly committed what could be either a misdemeanor or even a class B felony in the State of Washington over a pencil. If the Wankyland pencil meant that much to him, he could have just lent Eugene any other pencil. Talk about an overexaggeration!
2. Just because "it's an Oskar episode" doesn't mean Suzie is beyond criticism. The fandom gives her a free pass far too often because Oskar's flaws are louder. My point isn't that Oskar is secretly the good guy. He isn't. My point is that the fandom often acts as though Suzie can do no wrong simply because Oskar is usually much worse.
   • In "Baby Oskar," she repeatedly puts off making Oskar a sandwich, then unloads on him for saying "I'll do it tomorrow" after she's been doing essentially the same thing all episode.
   • In "Arnold as Cupid," Oskar absolutely behaves terribly throughout the episode. That doesn't change the fact that Suzie leaves her shoes in the middle of the floor, creating the hazard Arnold trips over. After her tart is ruined, Oskar offers to split his dessert, but she rejects the compromise and storms off when his misunderstanding of sarcasm results in him eating the rest. She contributed to the situation too.
   • In "Gerald Comes Over," throwing plates across the apartment isn't healthy or acceptable behavior, regardless of what Oskar did beforehand.
3. Stinky threw away a million dollars and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to change his family's circumstances because he let his emotions make the decision.
4. Olga isn't nearly as amazing as the fandom makes her out to be.
