Herald Article About Building New Homes with Job Influx

Interesting article, but it just skims the surface about why there are less new builds and thus the high prices. Does anyone know about the zoning code mentioned at the end of the article?

first novel

Hello,

I’m Bill Throndset, a Grand Forks native and have recently published an historical fiction novel about a murder, investigation and trial based on contemporaneous reporting in 1907/8 in area newspapers. On December 22 of 1907, Arthur LeClair, a fireman with the Great Northern Railway went home from Grand Forks to Neche ND on the Manitoba border with a hundred dollars meant as a Christmas present for his parents. By morning he was dead and under the ice of the Pembina…. “A Murder for Christmas”. You can find it locally at Silver Dawn Books.

Is anyone else turned off by the AI ads from businesses?

It seems like AI has gotten “popular” and I’m wording it specifically like that as many businesses think it’s awesome but many consumers think it’s horrid. I miss the creativity from businesses that put actual thought and effort into their ads. Now many of them read as the same note with no variety. Food businesses make it look like they’re selling highly photoshopped clay (think that one episode of SpongeBob where they were printing burgers and you’ll get my thought here). I’ll always choose to support a business more that’s not using AI for marketing as it feels like more love that AI cannot replicate in any capacity.

Like if it’s come down to cost, it’s still a lazy excuse for me and lets me think corners are cut all around. I’m sure from the local colleges and schools, there’s many designers and artists willing to do trades for labor. Like the AI use is unoriginal and too much of an eyesore to me.

Every once in a while, I see a business name in Grand Forks that I’ve never seen before, but the way they market themselves makes or breaks the first impression.

Back to School - Target

Hello! Does Target have there back to school stuff out yet? Specifically thinking about the Target Dollar spot (whatever it is called now). Thinking about making the trip in but I don’t want to waste gas if that stuff isn’t available yet. Thanks!

Dentist recommendations

I’ve been going to aspen dental so far and I’ve noticed while I’m there that they always tell me gingivitis and cavities and how I need braces right away for some crowding but when I was in another city visiting I made an appointment there and was told all looks good and they didn’t see any cavities or remarkable signs of gingivitis other than what majority of the population already has. So I’m curious if there is any other dental places in grand forks anyone would recommend?

Month to Month Rentals in Grand Forks

Trying to find if there are any places in Grand forks that do month to month rentals. I am a recently graduated student on the job hunt, and while I do have some solid prospects in the twin cities none of them seem as though they will start until at least mid August. Unfortunately, my lease at the Verge runs out at the end of July, so I am trying to find somewhere to rent just for the month of August in the interim. If anyone knows of any properties or people willing to rent for such a short period please do reply below!

Pray for Prarie Dogs

My wife and I have lived south of 32nd for about a year now after moving from Indiana. South of 32nd is its own drab strip mall township, the only good things besides King's Walk (not the golf course), Happy Harry's, Little Bangkok, and House of Punjab being occassional snatches of prarie dogs, hares, and native grasses. The amount of development seems like prarie dogs and hares will be extirpated unless either the city or citizens groups choose to buy and leave land alone. I fantasize constantly about having enough money to buy out Crary, Oxford Reality, or any of the other rabid real estate companies who seem to think that "build-build-build" means more cookie cutter houses and crap franchises.

For people who've lived around here for a while, do you sense any recognition of not paving over everything from the city? Does UND do anything? Is there an environmental group I can support in some way? Just looking for something for the prarie dogs.

Renting

Hi I currently rent from Oxford and I plan on moving out as I have had a bad experience with them. Has anyone gotten any of their deposit back? Or even a little?

My apartment is kept pretty clean but prior before living there they already had previous nails, nail hole, and nails painted over. I unfortunately never noticed until moving in. I indeed added to it as they said screw it and gave me the landlord special with grey paint.

Windows… all my windows need to be replaced. How do I know? Last winter I had snow coming into my windows so into my apartment. Thankfully I had the plastic insulation kit already on. I emailed them twice to let them know as I do not want to be responsible for any damage if it happened. Plus I do have a video of the maintenance man telling me it needs to be replaced. I cant fully open one bedroom window as it breaks every time I open it. Maintenance man told me to not full open it as it’s going to keep happening.

Trim… so my apartment was “updated” completely. It has the typical trending grey walls and white trim. I was cleaning my trim/baseboards and 3 parts weren’t nailed or screwed in. I literally took 2 pieces out as they weren’t attached.

Wash machine… the wash machine leaked a puddle of water and no one cares after emailing them. Happened multiple times. Definitely could be mold under there. They do have a drain near but the water puddle was hard to miss.

“Emergency maintenance” is a joke. The lady is so rude and doesnt take anything seriously. I had my smoke alarm going off like i had actual smoke/fire. Batteries were changed and in correctly and she put off my request. It went off none stop throughout the day and night. Other tenants would even call. I told the maintenance man the next day and he asked why i didnt call the emergency. I did. She didnt care.

Let’s be real… I have lived here for 2 years. I do have some paint chips and nail holes that need to be covered. Where can I find the closest match? I tried Menards but it wasn’t exact. Any tips or ideas on trying to get some money back?

thanks for letting me rant

Am I missing something with Cozy Rolls?

I recently moved to the area and finally tried them at Manvel Days after hearing so many people rave about them. I got an Original and a Wild Berry roll, and honestly... I wasn't impressed.

Both were pretty dry, not sweet at all and overall they tasted more like old grocery store cinnamon rolls than something I'd go out of my way to buy. I genuinely don't understand all the hype based on what I had.

Is this an unpopular opinion? Did I just catch them on an off day, or have others had a similar experience?

I have heard from locals that the owner is somewhat controversial given her past discussions around her responses to criticism online. This is incredibly unfortunate as i didn't learn about this until after spending my money.

EDIT ; FYI THE 80F IS MY GRANDMOTHER NOT MY MOM 😭😭
