I have an idea for a wearable alarm clock that forces you to stay awake and active after waking up. What do you think of it?
TL;DR: I'm thinking about a wearable alarm clock that doesn't just wake you up but makes sure you stay awake. It would monitor your movement and possibly heart rate, stay silent while you're active, and start alarming again if you go back to bed during a predefined wake-up period. Would you pay around $100 for something like this?
I constantly have trouble getting up in the morning, no matter how many alarms I set or how annoying I make them.
I've tried apps where you have to scan QR codes, solve math problems, or complete other tasks to turn the alarm off. But I can still just go back to bed afterwards. Traditional alarm clocks have the same problem – I can simply turn them off or put them under my pillow to make them quieter.
So I had an idea for a different kind of alarm clock:
A wearable alarm clock that you wear on your wrist and that only stays silent as long as you remain active after waking up.
The device could use an accelerometer and gyroscope, potentially combined with heart-rate monitoring, to determine whether you're actually awake and moving around or whether you've gone back to bed.
For example, you could set your alarm for 7:00 AM and require yourself to stay active for 30 minutes. The alarm could initially wake you up with vibration, sound, or another stimulus. Once you get up and start moving, it stays quiet. If you go back to bed and remain inactive for too long, the alarm starts again.
The idea is that you wouldn't just have to wake up you would have to stay awake.
I also think it would be important to make the device difficult to simply take off during the wake-up period. I was thinking about some kind of voluntary commitment system where you could choose a financial penalty if you remove or disable the device before completing your wake-up routine. The money could potentially be refunded in legitimate emergency situations, but if you simply remove it because you want to keep sleeping, you would lose the money.
I'm not sure about the exact implementation yet, and I realize there would be technical and safety challenges, especially when it comes to reliably detecting whether someone is actually awake and preventing false alarms.
But I think this could be useful for people like me who don't have a problem hearing their alarm they have a problem getting out of bed and staying awake.
Would you buy something like this for around $100?
Do you think this would actually help you?
Are there any products that already do exactly this or something similar? Would be glad to heat your opinions!
